Do you use your Knife more then you should?

I enjoy using my knives. If there is something that needs to be cut, then I cut. Yes, I could open envelopes with my fingers, but why? Yes, I could knock down cardboard boxes with my hands, but why? Yes, I could tear open that orange peel with my fingernails, but why?

I have stones for sharpening if the edge needs to be touched up, and I enjoy that too.

"Keeping the blade sharp" is a ludicrous reason for not using a knife IMO, although if that floats your boat ...

I love folks who don't think they need knives,;)

....until they want to borrow mine to cut something.

Big Mike

Boxes? Sure, the ones I cut up are double corrugated anti-freeze boxes with a bonded internal divider, and they get the big X on the bottom to fold up.

Letters - yes. Fingernails, yes. Chipping ice from the grille and hood of my daughter's car to get to the battery and jump it, yes. Am I still trying to get the nicks out, yes.

Knives are for cutting, I use mine on a lot of stuff. When it gets a bit risky and I don't need a blade sticking out of my hand, I use a special pair of knives with finger holes in them to control the cut. :)

Shave a door to get it to fit a jamb - yes. Didn't have a plane, and the Randall was handy. Cut open clamshell paks or tie wraps - yes. But it's done better with that special pair. I just don't like to carry then. Nobody makes really cool ones.

I'd post more, but I need to cut up a big cardboard box the dishwasher came in, and some oak flooring boxes, too. I'd rather recycle the cardboard in the dumpster at work than clog my roll around up for days.

SnG, or BM CQC7? Hmm. Resilience or the Boker Magnum Tech Folder in cf?

Decisions, decisions. Use it, don't let it just rust away in your pocket.

I'm guilty of that, not because I didn't have a plane but because it was in my tool box, across the room, locked. My para 2 makes a pretty good plane even with the belly it has. lol. If it can be cut instead of torn, I cut it.
Those packages that say, "tear here ------" yea. I cut them, and theres nothing anyone can do to stop me.

Yes.

When someone asks me for directions, I take out my knife and point - "That way".
I actually laughed at this. :D

Yes, I am guilty of this.
I have found times when I've looked for something to cut just because I hadn't cut anything in a while.
Like, within 30 minutes or so, Ill go put wood in my fireplace before bed and I'm sure Ill cut up cardboard, or whittle.
I obviously don't need cardboard because the fire is already going, and I DEFINITELY don't need to whittle to keep the fire going. :D
And when I get CV knives, I want an apple out of nowhere. :)
It's a sickness with no cure. FEED IT
I sort of miss the old days when I had no problem turning a pen blade into a screwdriver.
I totally agree.
Before my knife-knuttery kicked in, I used every knife as a screwdriver. Especially my Gerber Mini Paraframe.
Never a prybar, but I wouldnt hesitate to use it as a scredriver.
Now the thought of it makes me cringe.

Okay.. I guess I don't use it more than I should, because I only use it when I feel I need it.
But I probably use it for stuff I don't need it for(specifically cleaning my nails).

I think we all might be alittle guiltly of this. Me especially me. Since I dont really "need" knives,( I dont work on a ranch or do hardcore camping and such ), I find myself pulling out my knives for jobs that dont really need a one.

Like that apple I ate today, I could have just eaten it normally but instead I pulled out my knife and cut it up.

And the letters I got today I could have opened with my hands, but I used my knives.

I pretty much collect knives for the joy they bring me:D , and I know part of the fun of owning them is using them. But does anyone else find them selves doing this?

All the time, I just bought a BM Mini Grip and feel it necessary to have it everywhere. gotta get that moneys worth!

When things are slow, I stick my knife in the ground. When I see that I have moved away from the knife, I know that I'm making progress and am getting somewhere. :D

I was thinking the same thing. I use my knife whenever its needed for whatever its needed for. If it can't hold an edge until I get back to a sharpening stone or would break rather than being able to handle a task then it wasn't a good enough blade to begin with. But that's the great thing about this community; finding a selection of reliable hard-use blades based on a ton of good input from the folks here makes that research and decision-making process a rather enjoyable task.

+1
A knife was made to be used and makes these jobs easier and faster. We could do it with our hands, but didn't we buy our knife to help us with daily cutting chores?
I cut all sorts of stuff and love using my knife to do so lol. I may not really NEED it to do those things, but I want it to do those things.
