Do you use your over $1000 folder daily?

I have several of what I think are higher end productin folders, my favorite being the Strider, but I have also had the Darrel Ralph and CR Sebenza and currently carry the BM Williams and McHenry and use it. In fact, I tried to patina the blade recently according to the mustard thread and ground part of the handle material away to be able to thumb the stud more easily, so I don't mind using my more expensive folders. But....

I see on Knife Art, and Art Knives that they have folder that are very expensive and over $1000. Some go to $2K (They are very intricate Damascus and select handle materials). I'm sure some, maybe most are one of a kind.

The Delimma:

I thought that it is a shame to have such a beatiful knife and merely keep it in the safe. Also, if you carry it and bring it to the world, you get to show it to the world, use it, and have pride of actual usage. You have your beauty with you all the time and are using it.

The problem:

The problem is scratches, potential for loss, and wearing of the finish, blade, pivot and handle material.

The question:

Do you have very high end folders that you actually don't mind using and wearing out?

I want to buy a real high end custom and use it, but have a hard time seeing it used up. What's your take? Any users of their super high end folders? Are they even made to be used or are just display items.

In my heart, I want to hear that someone is using their to justify a purchase and to actually carry and use it. Pics anyone.

Driving a car off the dealer's lot depreciates more than the price of a very high end knife.

Find a knife you love, use the heck out of it, and pass it on to your kids. You won't regret it.

The funny thing is, I hate it when I scratch the blade on any of my pocketknives.

But, I recently found my Grandfather's repeatedly sharpened, scratched up, daily use 3-blade Buck knife, and I love it.

...Not that I have or will own any 1000.00 pocketknives anytime soon.

buying a knife, and then deciding to display it because you worry about scratches, resharpening and loss is like buying a Ferrari and putting it in the garage because you might crash it.....

whether it's a $50 or $1050 folder.......it's meant to be used, and even though you may feel severely scared and inhibited to do so, it's very enlightening.

personally i would never spend $1000 on a folder, or a fixed, but if i had one, i'd use it

Thanks so far for the differing opinions. Helps me to get a change of perspective. Since my thinking is so logical and perfect.;)

But really, I do appreciate the opinions profered here. It does help me to justify a big purchash and not put it away in a safe.

If I do buy an expensive knife (Knife ARt probably), I'll feel more comfortable knowing I'm not the only one using a high dollar knife to open boxes and mail.

I cant say i've baught a $1000+ knife,but i have baught and used every 4,5 and $600 knife i've owned!

I carry my ornate WH's and other very high ends while at work or when at church and generally nice places. I carry them to weddings and what not. Places where there elegance kind of comes into play and I know that they "probably" wont get all scratched up. Scratches dont bother me, its gouges.....you guys know what i mean, DEEP scratches on the high end stuff.

I don't really think I'm qualified to answer, because I've never owned any $1000 + knives. I only own 2 "high end" knives (high end for me, anyway), my Strider and ZT, and I try to use the heck out of both (not to the point of abuse, just normal EDC usage).

I do subscribe that if you buy a knife, any knife, it has to be a user to be a keeper. Knives gain character when they're used, and fond memories can be had using your knives in situations which warrant their usage. That type of history, IMHO, adds more value to the knife than just the materials it's made of or who made it.

I won't mind if I had a $1000+ knife and I had to use it everyday.

Just my 02. cents worth.:D

I am currently carrying and using a knife that cost a over $700.00. I love this knife, and I like using it.It is my favorite too. I know that I CAN send it back to the maker to touch it up or whatever.
And if Santa brings me another knife from this same maker, it is over $1,000, I would use it too.

I have been known to use mine , in my case a damascus nightmare grind SNG .

It's only a tool , use in good health !

Hi,
Yes, I do use my Gunhammer custom, but I DEFINITELY do not abuse it.
Just my opinion..

I too , do not own any that cost me that much but I do have two knives that spring to mind that I would not part with for $1000 so perhaps that counts. :p
I do use them both , very lightly. Meaning I would not baton thru stands of Fir with them or attempt to pry open coffin lids , things of that nature.

My biggest fear is this (and odd as this may sound) I'm am more afraid of losing them than messing them up cosmetically or mechanically , I'm afraid I will lose it and some schmuck will find it and use it for a throwing knife or try to sharpen it on a sidewalk curb or some silliness.

I don't have anything close to $1000 but I think I would still use it - not hard mind you, but still.... My most expensive blade is a SERE 2K, which up here is in the $300 range and it does get used. I think a lot would also depend on the fact that if you are going to drop that kind of money, is it going to be a blade designed for hard use, or one that is closer a "fancy" type:) I bought my SERE 2K more for the fact that if I had to use it hard, it would be capable of doing exactly that. If I were going to buy a high end blade, my first instinct would be it's utilitarian capability first. For instance, if I were to buy a left hand Sebbie, which I'm really starting to think about, I'm looking at the better part of $700 US for the one I've been eyeing - you can count on the fact that I would be EDC'ing it. Same with one of Darrel's knives:) Using them hard? Only if I had to. I haven't been able to bring my self " up there" yet - but I'm getting there. I'm still babying my Caly 3 a bit:)

I don't currently spend that kind of cash on folding knives, but I will be using a $700 fixed blade, and already use $300-$600 blades.

I just received my new Crawford Kasper which is very custom and cost $1750 and I am carrying it. Obviously I am going to be careful with it, but it is such a pleasure to handle it and even just to look at it that I decided to carry it daily. Not to mention that if I did ever need to use it for self defense, it is a scary looking piece of steel. I have numerous other knives that are strictly collectors items, but this one, despite the price range, is in my pocket. Here is a photo of a knife at True North Knives which is almost identical to the one Pat Crawford made for me......

I once knew an ex-SF who had been in Laos before it was public - he insisted he would buy an engraved Belgian Browning and use it on ducks in a driving rainstorm, leaving it in the bottom of the boat to get to shore. He commented that they were meant to be used, not worshipped.

Interesting that owners of SnG's use the knife. Mine presently has superglue on the blade. I'm sure worse will happen soon. Seems the decision to use is made right there, and another $600 in price is no obstacle.

Of course, if I had a WH for Sundays, I probably wouldn't pry open car doors with it, but having planed doors to fit jambs with a Randall #14, who knows.

It's like the vintage racers in $100,000 collector cars - drive it like you stole it. They're meant to be used.

Each to his own, but personally, if I were to pay $1000 or more for a knife, it had better have diamonds, gold, and other rarities affixed to it. And I certainly wouldn;t carry it.... I'd make a lanyard out of some fine silver wire or chain, and see if my wife would wear it as a necklace. I might buy two if she were daring enough to display some large earrings................

Well, like many people I'm not much on pocket jewlery. The most expensive knife I own was 200$, which makes easier to say that I'd use the hell out of a 1000$ knife. Probably becase I'll never own one. Good knives, just like fast cars, a good cigar or a beatiful woman, all have one thing in common. Their not worth a damn if all your gonna do is look at them funny.

I think the problem with expensive knives is that you are paying for more than just function. With a ferrari, you are paying for a very expensive car that goes faster than a cheaper car. With a $2000 knife, you are paying for damascus steel, space age (or ice age) materials, and you are buying something that is no more funcional than a $100 knife, in fact, it may be less functional. When I buy a knife, I buy it because it will cut things. I have many $150 knives that look cool, but their function is still to cut things. I would not buy a $2000 knife, because it would not cut any better than a $100 knife. They are still just knives, buy them for their intended purpose: to cut stuff. Buy art to hang on the walls!
