Do you use your over $1000 folder daily?

Why should anyone wants a knife over $200 as a user??????

Some expensive knives just beg to be used. Strider and CRK folders immediately come to mind. On the other hand I would be very hesitant about using a gold inlayed black pearl handled folder just because I would be afraid of cracking the pearl (did it once and I don't want to do it again) or messing up an inlayed blade.

It's like buying a Hummer with 18 karat golden wheels.
For $200,- you can buy a perfect user. The surplus is decadence, all right,
but decadence.

"My feeling is that people can purchase knives for whatever reason they want. If it is as a user, that is fine. If it is for a collection, and not to be used, that is fine as well." Keith Montgomery.

I find myself agreeing once again, with Keith. I can not describe the pleasure of owning and using a custom knife. It is a whole experience; from getting to know the maker, and to watching the different knives that they create. THEN choosing one of his amazing pieces to be your very own. There is nothing like it. I like supporting the makers that I have gotten to know. I admire what they can do!! I dunno....I don't think I can explain it.

If I had a $1K plus piece of cutlery, I definitely would be cutting the hell out of everything I could find!:D. But of course this comment is from a guy that doesn't have a $1k plus piece of steel:p.

I have a few knives that I will not use as a EDC just because I bought them to admire and collect. I am a bit anal about certain things I own because I want to have them look shiney and bright as the day I received them from the UPS or FedEx courier. It is just how I am about those things. I do use a couple Sebenzas as EDC knives and I'm not afraid of using them properly (No prying though. That job is left to my Atwood Bug Out Bar). To each their own and more power to them that wants to use or collect.

i carry my emerson specwar CQC6 and CQC8 all the time, they are probably worth combined almost $2500, i never abuse them though, try not to abuse any knife.

I currently own several higher end BMs but carry spyders since knives seems to fall out of my pockets. I'm gonna buy a mini rukus or small sebenza, figure out a secure way to carry it, and go from there.

Guns, however, are well secured on my person. I often carry a $3000 custom 1911. There is no practical difference between it and my $1000 1911s.

Two words -

Warm fuzzy.

When I first buy a knife I baby it. Clean it every chance I get, even if it doesn't need it. I won't want to cut anything with it.

But when the first couple scratches come, I get over it quickly. My first Buck was pampered for a few weeks before I started to seriously use it. Now I throw it around like there is no tomorrow. I chipped the edge, broke the tip, and scratched it to hell...doesn't bother me anymore.

I think a better analogy might be: "...like putting 18 karat gold wheels on a new F150 pick-up."

;) ;) ;)

Everyone HATES Hummers anyway. Usually, because it's fashionable to hate Hummers. For ecological reasons, or for reasons of bad taste, or for whatever. What most people don't realize is that there are at least 10 popular vehicles on the road right now that get WORSE gas mileage than a Hummer H2 - and no one gives them a second thought. There's a very funny website dedicated just to Hummer-haters - www.fuh2.com

if you want to use a 1000 knife, go for it , for me tho i cringe at the thought of cutting thru those plastic blister packs that every thing you buy these days comes in with my little 120.00 rittergrip,............thats why i have a beater kershaw vapor.............

I have been collecting knives for many years, in my early years i carried buck and schrade folders and used and sharpened them till they were junk because i beleive a knife is a tool and made to be used.......as times got better for me i bought a lot of high dollar knives that i was scared to use......and after many years of pulling them out once and a while and looking at them.......i decided this was bullshit and sold most of them and lost money on about 95% i still have some that i dont use and dont plan on sellin but now i am fortunate enough to carry and use some decent blades and i do use them.......who cares if they get scratched and worn ........you should be able to enjoy there use.......and if you got to roll them some time to get another and you loose a few bucks so be it ...... I say use what you got!! this smf is in my pocket now.

I'm going to spend (shortly) a tad over $500 for one knife I'll end up EDC-ing as a user, and later this spring just over $400 for another that will be used whenever possible. I will do this becasue:

1. I know and like the makers

and

2. They are incredible pieces of handmade art.

Speaking of that, I have a fixed blade that I paid a shade under $400 for that is also a user. The reason for THAT purchase was:

1. I know and like the maker

2. She's the first female ABS Mastersmith

and

3. I thought the design was just kick butt and I've never had another fixed blade like it.

-----

Now, you call it decadence. That's fine. Personally, I call it supporting friends in a tight-knit industry. Sure I use my Buck/Mayo a lot- and my $500 knife may not cut any better (though the edge is put on both by the same person)- HOWEVER, when you get into custom **ANYTHING** it is ALWAYS about more than the purchase price. Come to think of it, the reason there are multiple brands of ANY product (most at different price points) is because there's something more than just bare economics involved with any purchase you make.

I'll skate with my Super CQC-6 or a Strider in my pockets, but for some odd reason, I can't bring myself to use my beloved ZDP/Ti Leek!?!?! I like to use, but enjoy that there a people out there that treasure their stuff differently. Keith definitely hit it on the head.

The first time I brought myself to use a $400+ knife, it was a nervous thing, and I wasn't too comfortable, but in the end I said to myself, "Dude, we ain't eatin' our favorite stuff 'cause you decided to buy that thing, so you damn well better use it..." Life is too short to not go after whatcha love, whatever it is, and enjoy in any way that you well... enjoy it! :D

exactly the way I feel. I use all my knives. I have no 1000 dollar blades but have a few in the 300-500 range and they all have been carried and used. Some even have a blade scratch or two!

I would want to have a knife too pretty to actually hold, carry and cut with. It would be too difficult!

I lost a Brian Tighe that was'nt $1000.00 and it was devastating. I seriously went into clinical depresion mode for a month. I am not the type of person to loose things and knives especially. All I can say now is check the tension on your pocket clip daily. I just got a ZT 302 and it will be the most expensive knife I've EDC'd since. One day I'll recover enough to take a Dozier or something out of the house in my pocket again. >< Michaelmcgo I would agree to some extent. If you have ever cut with a new R.J. Martin you would know cutting preformance beyond the reach of any $100.00 knife. They are sharper (like hair popping, not shaving) and hold an edge well beyond anything cheaper. Also as a hard use person you may find one $500 Hinderer to outlast and preform a dozen $100.00 knives. Still most (folding) knives from $1000.00 up are often not designed to be hard use knives and the performance to price ratio falls off fast. I have my whole life been a person who puts a less than reasonable premium on fit and finish combined with overall quality. For me owning a knife that is beyond reproach and displays the height of human craftsmanship and artisrty is worth $1000.00 easy. Wether or not to take it out of the house is another story, but unless it was a real art piece I would still want to use it.

It makes sense to spend some money on something you use daily and carry with you. I think there is something very beautiful about a 700$ Busse bowie with a reprofiled blade and most of the coating worn off that is not there with a new one. It is like a worn leather jacket, it may have cost 500$ but you don't regret the stains ,the ripped lining or the scars you treasure them because they add character.

I think the problem with expensive knives is that you are paying for more than just function. With a ferrari, you are paying for a very expensive car that goes faster than a cheaper car. With a $2000 knife, you are paying for damascus steel, space age (or ice age) materials, and you are buying something that is no more funcional than a $100 knife, in fact, it may be less functional. When I buy a knife, I buy it because it will cut things. I have many $150 knives that look cool, but their function is still to cut things. I would not buy a $2000 knife, because it would not cut any better than a $100 knife. They are still just knives, buy them for their intended purpose: to cut stuff. Buy art to hang on the walls!

I must ask what kind of car you drive. If it is a Toyota Corrola or any similiar car, you can stick to your statement. If it is a sports car, suv or a like vehicle, you cannot make that statement. After all, a car is made to get you from point A to point B!

Cars are just an analogy.
It's about knives as USERS, "cutting tools". In that sense the Stockman
in grandfathers pocket was a cutting tool. A $1000 knife does not cut 5 times better than a $200 knife. I own very expensive knives, believe me.:D

no, but i use my $600 Sentz folder daily...does that count? :D

I would only buy a folder from a reputable maker. Luckily my taste run in the 300 to 400. I also have a fixed in the 500s and I use them all. You'll soon forget the cost when you use them.
