do you wash your pocket knifes before and after cutting food?

Nah. Hell, I've gone from batoning immediately into cutting a steak plenty of times. Only a few times I've gutted snakes, rabbits, other small game and didn't clean the knife before using it to eat the animal it dressed. I wiped it down a bit but that's all. I just don't see a point. I mean, I'm not gonna leave feces on my knife and spread peanut butter with it, but if it isn't something extreme like that, I don't worry about cleaning it.

hey bros, i have a question to ask. i've seen too many posts of people using their knifes to cut food. anything from steak, bread, to fruits is fair game. i've even seen pocket knifes used to spread butter or jams on bread. but let us say you use your knife to gut a fish, it wouldn't be too sanitary to use the knife on an apple you going to eat right?

i also saw a friend of mine slice an apple with his folder then eat it. i asked him if he washed his knife before he sliced the apple and he said he didn't. i can just imagine what he used his knife for before that.

so how about it? do you give any thought about what you used your knife on the last time before using your knife on something you going to plop down on your mouth in a couple of seconds after using your knife on it without washing? i'd like to hear your thoughts.

I've gutted fish, skinned large game, and used my blades on steak all the way to cutting sandwiches.. And all I've done to clean after those use's is - rinse the blade with water and dry.. No issues (meaning I didn't contract a virus or turn green :))

I would say, however, that once a month I rinse my whole EDC in water, dry (using compressed air and/or blow dryer), and apply Tuf-Glide over the blade.

That's it.

I have a dedicated food knife (opinel no4) therefore, I wipe
it with my shirt and that's about it. I do not see any point for
disenfection. I have used one of my knives to kill some mice,
so that does not see any food duty.

if you've touched a public door handle chances are your hands have way more germs than your knife blade. do you wash your hands before touching your food?

for me it depends on what my knife has cut. I generally know where my knife has been since it was last washed. sometimes I just wipe the pocket dust off on my shirt before using. sometimes I give a quick rinse, other times I full on wash it before hand.

likewise it depends what food I cut if I wash afterwards. fruit gets at least a quick rinse and wipe as that will gum up a blade quickly. raw meat gets a full wash. cutting a bagel might just get a brush off on my jeans.

Yeah that's pretty much where I'm at too.

If I just cut meat/fish/poultry then yes, I will wash the blade after. Most other things I'll just while the blade on my pants unless it's stoning that gets sticky.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
I like to think I wash it after each use, but sometimes it takes a day or two. If it's sticky I'll rinse and dry it.
I really don't use my folder for raw meat.

Yep. This is my approach as well.

In my younger years I worked in the field in the chemical industry. Used my knife for everything with little to no access to cleaning supplies at times. Never got sick, never bothered me.

As for the cat food thing...wipe it off and good to go. Cat food may not be something that any of us are particularly interested in eating, but it IS fit for human consumption. I'd stir the cat food, wipe my blade, cut my banana, and never think twice about it. ;)

I DO thoroughly clean and oil my knives, but that is for the upkeep of the knife. Not because I'm squeamish.

I'll echo the idea that our immune systems could use a gentle nudge every now and then. String, pocket lint, whatever's rolling at the bottom of my backpack. As long as the blade doesn't have any visible gunk or ooze or whatever on it, apples beware. Depending on the situation I'll do what most seem to be saying, a quick rinse and a wipe on the leg of my pants. Meat and fish and fatty things like cheese or nut butters... well, those might warrant a not-so-quick rinse, but I try to keep my SAK away from blood 'n' guts as much as I can. Generally I'll give it a once over with soap and hot water once a month or so... I seem to be surviving okay :)

The Kudu makes a surprisingly good food knife.

I wipe, cut, and rinse off afterwards. I don't stress much about it, but being a good city boy I haven't had to touch a dead animal with any of my knives. If I did I'd probably take a bit more care.

I pack my lunch quite often and if there is anything that needs cutting I wash my blade with hand sanitizer gel before use and when I get home I will strop and oil it.

I always clean my knives with at least a thorough wipe and dry after cutting or handling anything that would/could be caustic. At the least it is going to gunk up your blade. A messy knife will dull faster, wear out quicker, and overall just perform poorly when compared to its cleaner counterpart. Also, bacteria gross.

Immune system FTW

Yours maybe, mine tries to kill me on a regular basis. Damn thing is so suppressed it's practically nonexistent.

And yes, I DO. I will clean the knife if the means to do so are available before using it on food. Generally I only clean it after if I cut raw meat or something acidic.

somehow, i don't think wiping actually sterilizes anything that could be potentially harmful.
harmful bacteria and stuff should be the greatest worry.
i figure the best shot is with alcohol....

Seriously, the Zulu is just so awesome. :D

I seem to be using the same methods as most here; if I can see it, away it goes with a rinse when available; otherwise, my pant legs suffice.
