Hi All,

I'm taking a much needed break in the day. Life is too complicated and we seem to make it more and more difficult all the time.

So, I am waxing philosophic.............................

Staring me in my face, from one cabinet here in my office, are the knives shown below. They were all folded up and lined up next to one another. No one could see them but me, and I wasn't even paying attention most of the time.

So, here's to looking at life a little differently.
Making hard times....................... good times.
Making complicated things....................... easier.
And, taking a break to look at some things that are just very beautiful.

There is something very reassuring about holding a good tool in your hand. The feel of the natural handles, the sense of real usefulness in the good steel. It doesn't make me yearn for old times, it helps make me want the best of times to be right now.

Good tools give us a sense of history, but even more, they can give us a feel for the history we can create today.

Now, I'm a pretty bright guy.
I'm also kind of a putz in certain areas.
But put a good tool in my hand, a knife, a carving chisel, a hammer, and things just seem to even out. I can always make something. With a good tool, I can feed my family just like my Dad did and just like his Dad did.

Even the feel of a good keyboard on my way-cool laptop gives me that sense that this little computer is a good tool. With good tools, I can work.

So, enjoy these doc's knives on parade. Then go find some of your own good tools that you may not have looked at for a while. Share them with us here, share them with friends, kids, and even the wives. There is no replacement for good tools. We need them to extend our reach and to make the pictures in our minds really happen.

Please make a post here. If you don't have a picture, tell us about your "best tool" feeling. Post pics if you have them. After a while, I'll throw the numbers in a hat, and super-puppy-dog Ginger will sniff one out. We will find a new home for one of these docs knives. Don't know which one, or who it will go to. They are all great tools.

Hope you can take a minute to chime in and wax-philosophic too.

As always......................

Keep Good Care,

Pappy

Remember when you wax philosophic, it really doesn't have to make any sense. LOL

I don't know about waxing philosophical, but that old Remington and ebony Catt are something else. Actually, those are all pretty terrific.

Thanks for sharing, Pappy!

Here's to "Making complicated things....................... easier."

I have this one doctor's knife, and always felt it was kind of special, because the spatula is flexible, like some palette knives. While the french ivory (cell) handle isn't a natural material, it is one of the best loved plastics, used on many antique household items, and has a fragile beauty all its own. I like looking at it, but haven't carried it, because it doesn't relate to my usual knifely activities.

Now this knife is one of my all time favorites. Slightly different than other Barlows, I am referring to the Robeson, shown here above a standard Case. Both are Redbone, and have similar blades, but the subtle smoothness of the shape, i.e; a little slimmer, rounded bolsters etc. make the Robeson the real winner in the "which one should I carry" debate.
The steel takes a good edge easily, and retains it. A true "good tool"!

My mind immediately went to some of my older kitchen knives when thinking of old tools that I don't use enough. I just sharpened a couple of old Russell ones and chopped veggies for a pot of soup. Thanks for making me stop and think, and here is my favorite doctors knife, also a Russell. - Dan

Thanks for sharing Pappy. That Ebony Cat is beautiful. As for a favorite tool I would have to say a knife.Maybe its more of an obsession. a tool tool, would be my leatherman wave. There when I need it.My prize possesion is this tool box I believe my grandfather made. Thanks for the thread Pappy.

Very nice Doctor knives!

Here's a photo of my much newer Case Doctor knife. Not philosophical, but I believe he could use one of your "seasoned relatives" to show him the ropes. (nonsensical enough for you?) :D

What a parade of doctors! Thanks for showing them off everyone!

When the weather is a bit warmer I like to spend a bit of time most evenings sitting outside trying to make something out of a block of wood. I have a Boker Congress carver that I've had pretty good luck with, and I just recently picked up an Oar Carver - the detail one with one small blade - that is working out pretty good. The Oar Carver is just a Queen Canoe with D2 blades that have been cut down to carving knife size. Anyway, it's about 12 hours from the time I leave for work in the morning until I get home at night, and sitting out on the deck and doing a little whittling is a nice way to unwind in the evening.

And thanks for the photos, Pappy. This is the first post I clicked on after getting on the computer and it was a great way to start the evening!

Hi All,

Well, it's that time.

Ginger the wonder-puppy has decided that the small bone cattaraugus is the one to be given away today. (Yeah!!!)

But, Ginger did not think it was nice that only one person would get a knife...........
so............................. all of you will get one!!

The Bone Cat will be sent out to the winner, and everyone else will receive an AC doc knife, new in the box, hafted with sambar stag. (this is one of our discontinued production knives)

No one knows who will get the Cat and who will get the AC's. So email or PM me your address and we will send them out. The person getting the cat can let everyone know.

Anyone that wants to can still post pics, but the 11 posts above will get the knives.

Thanks to all and Merry Christmas.

Keep Care,

Pappy

Just sent and email. Thanks for another great contest. I hope to have one of my own soon, I am just trying to pick the right knives to give away. - Dan
