Does anybody carry a traditional bowie in the field?

I have a Mineral Mountain Hachet Works camp bowie and a Wester 49 high carbon steel that I like alot that is a worker. I also have an old Fox bowie that I pick up from an ex army guy that bought it a Fort Bragg. Sorry no pics, need to learn more about that. Loosearrow

boweez r stoopid...:D

Seriously though...if I could find something not made by Lynn Thompson's personal flea market that I could afford I would probably carry one.

i think they are just out of style right now frankly...

as i understand it, the bowie was originally intended as a general use camp knife for skinning/butchering and light brush clearing, and just happened to end up in a fight one day.

i would not mind using a bowie in the field if i needed one, but i don't really need one so don't use one. i would certainly use that marbles though, it looks like a very no-nonsense knife. i don't know if i would call that a bowie though, more of a camp knife style with a clip point. bowies generally have larger gaurds, often double, and have longer clips, at least as far as i can tell.
Now, this is a bowie. It's my Voorhis custom bowie:

Aha, in SK-5? What markings do they have on them? Specifically, I'm concerned about a Taiwan stamp that I would need to grind out.

Was looking at getting one for a rehandle a while ago. Had the same problem as you but luckily I found some close up pictures.
Cold Steel and CHINA are painted on the blade but there is nothing stamped.

Hey, thanks very much for that amigo. Really appreciated. :-)

I have a 10 inch Bowie with bronze guard and black walnut handle that Jerry Fisk forged for me back in the 90's. It goes with me pretty much everywhere and gets used all the time. About 18 months after I received the Bowie I also received a 5 inch utility knife from Master Fisk with matching fittings that likewise goes along. Considering his status as a National Living Treasure my friends tell me I'm crazy for using them but that's why I have them. Anything less would dishonour the knives as well as their maker. No time now but I will post pictures.

What makes a bowie knife a bowie knife to you?

And does anyone prefer an old bowie as a user tool?

Sometimes a bowie is defined by it's "duck beak" tip and sometimes it's the size and the handguard. I think Rezin Bowie went to a knifemaker in the first place because he had an accident with a knife: He wanted to kill a cow by stinging between two vertebrae, but his knife had no handguard and and his hand slipped down the blade...

I have a Buck 119 and I love it, it's a great field knife. But it's not a BIG bowie.
Last year I started making a big bowie similar to the one from Seraphim Falls, but I haven't finished it yet. I only have the stag handle and the blade ready, but it has no grind yet, it doesn't fit into the handle yet and I'm still working on the handguard... So, most of the work is still in front of me. :o

I think the Case XX Bowie is the ideal bowie, and it's due to the out-of-the-box edge.. i whacked a 3" sapling to see how the knife would cut and it cut THROUGH it, dropped like a stalk of cane, swoosh, and the top part of the tree came down beside the stump..

i was shocked and amazed. A razor sharp hollow ground edge, a full draw cut, i accidently did it CORRECTLY to accomplish that impressive feat, and probably couldn't have done it again in a dozen tries.

To my mind, the Case XX Bowie is the bang-buck winner of all the wanna-be's. it'd suck for a camp knife.

Here are few of my favorite bowies
Bagwell stag and carbon
Shiva Ki fighting bowie
and my Bagwell Hell's Belle

I've got one too and although I like the knife I don't think they are a good all rounder.

I agree the older Case carbon steel bowies are another excellent choice. Get rid of that ridiculous guard like on the Western bowie and it makes an excellent camp knife.
