Does anybody out there use a knife they can't replace?

I used and lost a knife that I couldn't replace. It was a Gerber Paul knife and I was very upset to lose it. That was a heck of a nice knife.

There is no way for me to replace the Randall Model 1-6 I purchased in 1966 that has accompanied me ever since. New Randalls aren't the same. But what good is something that you can't enjoy?

I lost a Paul knife also about 15 years ago. It was given to me by an old girlfriend and I was bummed. Now I use a Mayo baby hawk as my work knife. The knife is perfect for cutting bandages and tape and such. I also use a medium TNT that Tom made for me that is my swimming knife. On my off time I carry a large Sebenza and a mammoth ivory Mnandi. My CRK's are replacable but it would be expensive to do so. All the knives I mentioned are left handed (as am I). ;) :p

I USED to have a kukri, but it was stolen, given to me by my uncle, he was in Burma in WW11 with the Gurkas, they gave it to him,yes I am a Brit, point is keep the knife you like, i am thinking about getting in to knife making to replace mine

I have three, and the last one is a 'maybe.'

I have a Strider AR, one of only five, with a bright stainless pocket clip, stamped BG-42, when it's actually S30V. I use it carefully, but I use it for anything. I'm careful, no scratches or dings, it looks NIB.

I also have a Strider SnG(2) with a stone washed blade; the first 100 are numbered, mine is the 049. Same deal, it's my most carried EDC.

I just got a SOG Tomcat, and just ordered a spare, just in case. I use the word 'maybe,' because I heard that they are phasing out this model.

You can't take them with you, enjoy them here.

For Me it is not "The Knife" but the thought and the history behind the knife. I would rather lose Audra Draper or Burt Foster custom hunters than a small case xx fixed blade that my father gave me. Loseing the Foster or Draper would hurt my pocket a lot more but a knife that my father dressed his first deer with and I did the same could never be replaced. That being said I still use the old case from time to time but I am very very carefull not to lose or abuse my "one of a kind".

I carry and use a Trace Rinaldi Sharkstooth. He no longer makes these.

Do you happen to have a picture of the Sharkstooth? I've never heard of that model before.

I own several knives that I could not replace, for one reason or another, and I use them all. In fact, the only knives I own that I don't use are a couple that I value as gifts but do not have any actual use for as knives. The rest of them have to earn their keep, if only rarely in a few cases.

I have several unique knives and use them all. My feeling is why save them, I'll lose them when I die anyway. I could "pass them on" but once you're dead, who knows what will happen to your precious things. I also feel that it is bad for a person's psyche to place too much value on the material things, irrespective of the price, beauty, or uniqueness of something. Plus, you can be wiped out in a heartbeat by one good fire.

How many of you guys carry and use knives you can't replace? (either because it's too expensive to get another, they are no longer made, or it is one of a kind)

I've had knives that I just couldn't bear to use because they were rare, so I sold them off. I'm just wondering how many of you guys carry and use something a little on the rare side.

WOW! Great idea for a thread. I've actually enjoyed reading everyone's posts which can get boring in other "Does anyone..." posts.

I bet you just found out that "can't replace" is a pretty broad statement, huh?

Limiteds
Any production with custom work added on
Any unique factory defect or mismark
Out of production
Special runs
Special rehandles
etc. and so forth...

And my resounding answer is YES OF COARSE! Life is short. There's no reason not to carry a knife you like because of some sort of collector's value. I've been known to buy a BACKUP of knives that have been discontinued but are my favorites in case I lose it or wear it out.

My favorite knife is a Microtech Auto Amphibian that has custom bullfrog inserts, a rare satin blade and hand polished hardware. Some of it is factory and some of it is aftermarket. I worry a LITTLE about it being taken away from me by a cop or something, but it's such a PLEASURE to carry and use that it's worth the risk of losing it somehow.

Besides, if I lose it I'll get another favorite somewhere! There's ALWAY'S something else cool that I could learn to love just as much.

I also have a bunch of other "Pre-Production" or factory stamp and naming mistakes that I couldn't really care less about.

The only knives TOO VALUABLE for me to carry, EVER, are the ones given to me or inherited to me by my Grandfather. Those stay in a fire-proof safe.

Obviously, sentimental value is an other thing altogether.:(

Thanks! I thought it would be interesting reading, and it has. It's also good to hear I'm not totally crazy for wanting to carry something rare! It sounds like a lot of you carry and use your rare knives.

A while back I sold a pretty rare knife to one of my best friends (a pre-production "dagger grind" manual action Socom Elite - plain edge, clip point, anopeen finish). Just recently we went to a gun show together and through a twist of fate he sold the knife back to me! (he wanted to buy an Extrema Ratio MPC they had at the show and needed some extra cash!)

I let this baby go once before. This time I'm going to use it... it's just going to be hard putting those first few scratches on her. :D

Sure. Two irreplacables have been stolen. One was my father's WW2 Kbar. His mother had sent him a double sided dagger when he was AAF and he traded it for a Navy Kbar, similar to the standard one, but polished blade and polished leather washers. Back when I small in the 50s he broke a half inch to an inch off the tip throwing it at a wooden post and reshaped the blade and made a new sheath to fit it. The balance was changed for the better we both thought. He let me use it for hunting but it was his. One day a burglar took it while we were out (a Bronx tale). An ex girlfriend snagged a folding Kershaw of a slim design (tortise shell inlays, stainless, etc.) no longer made. I miss it as I have never before or since had such a harmless looking mean little knife.

I carry a Kershaw Talon with a bottle opener, factory G-10 and a factory done tip-up position clip. I only know of a handful of other Kershaw talons in this configuration - and the Kershaw Talon, especially the bottle opener variant, is increasingly hard to get anyhow.
Its essential, IMO, to my EDC because of the way I run a defensive knife as its the best pikal folder around, although most likely by accident.
If I ever lose it I'm gonna **** bricks. :p

I carry two I can't replace quite often.

One is my Benchmade 710 with black Aluminum scales and an M2 blade. The original Aluminum handled 710's are a rare bird and I added the PE M2 blade so it's possibly a one of a kind.

The other is my 1 of 37 Benchmade 705 with Carbon Fiber scales and DLC coated M2 blade. Being only 1 of 37 it will be near impossible to replace if needed.

True. I've tried over the last two weeks to find one like it and I can't. Keep it or sell it to me!:D

Sure. I usually carry a Banchmade Mini Dark Star. Sometimes it's the MT Mini Socom M/A or Socom Elite M/A.

Btw, Antdog, I really love that dagger grind Socom Elite!

Maybe not totally irreplacable, but I use and carry a small CRK Sebenza limited, with Snakewood inlays. Out of the 60 small limiteds they make each year I don't believe many have snakewood for the inlay. I have only seen 2 others.
