Does anyone else just give away knives like nobody's business?

I have come to the startling realization of why my knife collection is so much smaller than what it used to be, I gave them all away!

Even when I was first getting into knives (Winchester, Gerber, Frost, Remington, Smith and Wesson) I gave away so many knives that I sometimes bought two of each!

Recently I gifted a Spyderco Tenacious, a Byrd Cara Cara 2, a SOG Trident, a Case Sodbuster Jr, a Kershaw Brawler, and a bag full of some old $10-$20 users.

These all went to about 4 people total and it really just surprised me when I realized this.

So does anyone else do stuff like this, or am I just weird?

I have given 4-5 to co-workers and friends, 4-5 to my Dad and at least 6 here on bladeforums. Most knifeNuts have more than they can use and certainly more than they need!

There is a lot of generous people in this hobby of ours. Glad to see another one!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that does this. I'm always giving away knives to friends and family, some of them pretty pricey. Gave my big brother my gently used Spartan Nyx. I think that I do it so that the people I surround myself with start to take a further interest in this hobby. I have plenty of "knife buddies", but it's always good to have more. Besides, knives make wonderful gifts!

I've bought as gifts for others a pile of knives, including recently a Benchmade 707, a Mcusta Tsuchi, and a Spyderco Native. I've also gifted knives I bought thinking I might like them but then didn't (Spyderco Sage 1, Sage 2, and Chapparal). Incidentally, the folks I gave the Spydies that didn't click for me all loved them, or at least claimed to.

I like giving folks knives because in addition to giving them a useful tool, it's a gift they're not likely to get from others. Besides, you never know who you might turn into a new knife junkie if you seed your population of friends.

I don't generally give away knives I buy for my self but I buy knives as presents, for Christmas I gave one nephew a spyderco military, the other got a navaja and my niece got a dragonfly tattoo. My brother in-law got a benchmade pen but that's because he got a leak for his birthday.

*EDIT* Forgot I also gave my friend a boomslang for Christmas.

I ended up giving away a kershaw salvo that was suppose to be an edc but ended up sitting in my case. Also gave a kershaw storm and vapor 3 to two people who wanted knives. So it happens here and there, but there are ones that will always be just for me.

You're not alone. I've given away more knives in my lifetime than I've kept. Some cheapies, some not so much. I never plan on giving them away, it just happens. Off the top of my head ive given away 2 case peanuts, a buck 110 and 55, a kershaw scallion, 2 leeks, 2 delicas, a tenacious, a ladybug, 2 mini grips, one regular one ritter, a benchmade 707, a benchmade mini dejavu (kinda wish I'd kept that one), crkt ripple, a handful of SAKs and a couple of leatherman tools. Probably a few more I'm forgetting but basically if you're someone important inbmy life theres a good chance I've given you a knife. Usually its a story of me using a knife and somebody commenting that they really like that one or when I notice somebody asking to borrow my knife a lot. Some people start carrying every day, some don't, but they all learned the value of a good sharp knife.*

This is the main reason I save the boxes.
Also, if a trade goes really well, I'll add another knife just to show my appreciation. I learned that here on the forum and started doing it myself.
As others have mentioned, there's some good people here.

I got a few of my fathers knives when he passed and gave one of the old Gerbers to a good guy at work who needed a knife. He's my trainer and was shocked by how sharp it was (edge pro will do that to people). :)
Most everyone i know already has a quality knife so i offer to sharpen them. Im always amazed at how dull people let them get. Theyaso tend to sharpen at a very wide bevel. 30° inclusive rocks some peoples worlds. :D

I can relate! I gave my little brother a Ratmandu, a Microtech Socom delta, and we share a production XM18 as a user.

I wish I had me as an older brother ;)

what started as a gesture of friendship became a habit. i gave a knife to a couple who were office mates and drinking buddies. humble folks but fun to be with. best of all, they appreciate my knife mania (the girl more than the guy.) first i gave the girl a chinese-made gerber torch framelock. then the guy a buck 371 stockman. the following year i gave them my buck 301 black delrin stockman. they're delighted each time. a mutual friend tells me they keep the knives on display in their living room. this year i plan to give them another stockman, a case 6318 cv. eventually i might give up my tiny case toothpick or the chestnut bone peanut as that's what the girl really likes.

they know i keep some 'better' more expensive knives for myself but they understand me that much. having friends is great.

I've done it.... besides my best friend which doesn't count (Some damn expensive give aways!!!) I tend to do the same if I'm not using them

I just want to say, i think this is great.

I actually struggled with a pay it forward situation because the guys over on my motorcycle forum have been so kind to me. I couldn't figure out a good way to pay forward their acts of kindness. Now i know what ill do. The next time i have the opportunity, ill give someone a knife.

Now i just need to figure out which knife to give.

I also really like the idea of a bonus the next time i trade. Im not sure if i have anything suitable, but ill look. :)

by the way, i failed to mention that i was a recipient far longer than a self-financed collector. i'd like to thank my older brother benjo; living in toronto, who might be a lurker here. he usually gives me knives each time he comes for a visit to the philippines.

thanks much bro!
