Does anyone every organize "group buys?"

I'm a member of several forums, from watches, to guns and everything in between. There is a particular shooting forum where they have a "members only" section. Inside this section they run "group buys" where they leverage their buying power for significant discounts from manufacturers/retailers.

Has anyone ever done anything like this here?

With the high post counts, and number of members online within this forum I'd have to believe you could make some pretty decent deals for yourselves.

Or, if collectibility is your motive, rather than price, how many knives do they generally make in a Spyderco sprint run? I bet you could offer to buy all of the knives in a sprint run to your specificatioin.

On the shooting forum the last group buy I participated in was for Benelli shotguns. We ordered 55 Supernova Tactical pumps and 11 M4 semis to the tune of $45,000+ and the savings we got was substantial. I think U.S. Customs freaked out slightly when 66 Italian tactical shotguns came in for one gun shop, but it was worth the delay.:D

I'd have to figure you could identify a production knife, set up a quantity discount schedule for 100+, 150+, 200+, etc. and get a quality knife at a very good price.

The forum also gains because only the paying members that support the site are allowed to participate. You'd be surprised at how many members became premium members when they found out about the saving that could be had. One or two group buys per year, here, would more than pay for any membership fee.

Just a thought.

I might be wrong but I think it was done here or at the least attempted and there was an issue or something went wrong. Don't quote me on that because I don't have all the facts but I think I remember something of that nature falling through. Maybe someone else can chime in and shed some light.

The Traditional Forum is organizing a 2011 traditional forum knife.
They've done this for the last couple of years and have arranged for some very nice purchases.

I'd love to see one for the Spyderco Manix 2. It's a popular production knife from a great company so they could handle a 100-200 knife order.

I do my own group buying, that way if something is screwed up I'm the one to blame.

I'd be interested in something like this. I like BeerGuy's suggestion that it be limited to paying members. However, I think a group buy would be most useful/attractive if it were directed at higher-end knives since the savings would be larger in absolute terms. For instance, even if we were able to get 25% off the $70ish street price of a Manix 2, the savings wouldn't be all that substantial ($17.50 per knife). But if we were able to get that same percentage discount on a CRK, Strider, or other knife in the $300-400 range, we'd be saving $75-100 per knife. Another attraction of targeting brands like CRK and Strider is that we might be able to negotiate a lower price on brands that don't usually permit discounts (e.g., buying as an individual, a new large Sebenza 21 retails for $385 no matter where you get it).

I've seen some group buys in another forum and they were some great deals.

I havn't seen any here on bladeforums, but would love to get involved in one for the right knife.

I did one not to long ago when bravo was selling the cases of mags super cheap. Only thing I hated was the people who were all yeah I want some but money never materialized or changed their mind repeatedly. Gota set rules right of f start and if you give anyone an exception on quanity etc words gets out and more people want to make it difficult for ya. With mags I wasn't worried cause no matter what I knew I could sell em. Other complainant I had a few people asked for individual receipts for the exact amount o mags hey got. everyone got the same copy of the purchase order I got for the entire order and they are looking for me to do more work for nothing. Bottom line someone always is going to make it difficult but the savings can be wort it. I have a small one for Ar selectors that is a super headache because the company has so many options available and some
People can't make their min up on which ones they want Bottom line keep it simple.

Beerguy- I am in the market for a M4 Benelli, just curious how much they went for on the group buy?
Thanks

:)

Thanks, yeah I've given up ever finding an inexpensive Benelli M4.

It seems the longer I wait, the higher the price gets. I need to pick one up soon.

If we could leverage that kind of GB towards Strider/CRK/Hinderer that might actually make them easIER to obtain for your average person. I would so be up for a large sebenza/XM18 GB. Even if there was a 6 month wait. PM me if this ever happens (doubt it)

I doubt the XM-18 would happen since the main reason those are difficult to obtain is that Rick simply can't make enough to meet demand. But CRK/Strider very well might happen since there isn't much of a supply limitation there.

I'm in on the group buy if any one does spyderco or benchmade I'll do what i can to help set it up if some one tells me what they need to get it rollin.

Good idea!
