Does anyone keep their Sprints?

By Mr Sal I assume you mean Sal Glesser? I was not aware that he dabbled in that aspect of knife collecting.

I'm sorry. What I simply meant was that he manufactures the sprints - and all other Spydies of course - and generates income in the process. I'm not sure about any collecting he may do.

Thank you for your thoughts, Mr Noodle! By Mr Sal I assume you mean Sal Glesser? I was not aware that he dabbled in that aspect of knife collecting. I would like to be clear I have no issue whatsoever with reselling knives at a profit. I have done that myself on more than a few occasions. I just hope that MOST people who buy a Sprint are buying them because they love fine knives, nothing more than that! If they resell them later, that is of course, their absolute right. It might just be my perception, but I have noticed that Sprints are definitely being bought and sold with greater alacrity than before. Maybe I am imagining it...

Uh, Sal Glesser designs, makes and sells knives for a living. He is the CEO of Spyderco. He does more than dabble in that aspect of knife collecting, he has the final say on what Sprint Runs get produced. In essence, if it is a Spyderco product, Sal sold it.

Some people buy two or three of a run hoping to sell the extras for enough to pay for the keeper. I've always felt that if I needed to do that, I had no business buying one. Different strokes.

Who cares what people do. It's their prerogative to do whatever. Ive never bought one personally. However, if someone buys a few to flip for a little extra cash, so be it.

IMO it reduces the ability of true knife enthusiasts to be able to own and use the knives. I might be able to buy an orange PM2 for $120 and carry and use it, but there is no way I can buy one for upwards of $250. If there was a way to restrict purchase to true enthusiasts who wanted to use the knives then I would be all for that, but of course there isn't . It is just like when a big music star announces a concert and the ticket promoters pack the lines with homeless people to buy up all of the tickets before the real fans have a shot at them. I think the real fans should have first shot at the tickets.

I bought a sprint at its retail price. It was very expensive for me even at its retail price but I sold some of my other collectible items and bought it. I immediately put it in my pocket to carry it, and it will not be resold at a profit. I would like to buy an orange one or a green one, but I can't do it at extremely inflated prices so I as a true knife enthusiast gets left out. I am on the boards every day but I managed somehow to miss out on these recent sprint runs, and on the 3 or so announcements I was watching for on the Becker forum. It seems to me that the first shot at buying when these things are announced goes to the people in the in-crowd and I'm guessing that they are they ones that buy multiple knives and flip them for profit, which is why the announcements are kept so secret.

i'm not a profit flipper, actually i can't even sell any knife, i hav a bunch that no longer sees the light, some pretty collectible and barely used but selling is not my cup of tea. my current edc is only sprint runs in rotation : S90V milie, M390 milie, M4 milie, super blue caly .... i won't do it, don't think it's very "classy" to do so either but ....

... who the hell are you to decide who deserve to buy a product ? if you want an exclusive product at street price, deserve it, hunt the forum, preorder etc ...

Well, I currently have the following sprints in my carry rotation:

Blue Para 2
Gray Para 2
CF Military M390
Foliage Green Manix
Foliage Green Manix 2
Orange Dodo

But I sort of agree with Ken44 - why does it matter?

I find it funny that the secondary market always seems to be flooded with limited sprints right after their release (i.e. Orange Para 2), but that isn't going to change.

I buy sprint runs to try new steels and always have at least 5 more knives on my "to buy" list so I don't spend money on extras, with that said I don't see a problem with reselling, even with some of the most sought after sprints they are available for at least a week to pre-order for original price, and I've never had a problem getting one I wanted (and even a couple I didn't think I wanted, and waited awhile to pick up).

So if a person was going to take your advice and get on the preorder for the next sprint run, they could go to spyderco's web site, check to see what sprints are coming up, and wait for an announcement that might happen somewhere. I do that today to see what the next sprint runs are going to be and find that there are NONE. The Green PM2 seems to be the last sprint run, not to be released for at least 2 more months, and it sold out a long time ago. There appear to have been 5 sprint runs for 2012, all already sold out and no more coming up. How exactly IS a person supposed to get in on a sprint run at the proper price? It appears that the people that resell them know how to do it, maybe they have an inside track for the information, but the average enthusiast is at a disadvantage.

I use my FFG Manix 2, I think it's CTSBD30P? As far as sprints go, I just wanted a FFG Manix 2. I don't care about super steels. I appreciate them, but I do not need them. I would have been happy with a FFG 154CM Manix 2.

I have the following which are all used:

Manix 2 BD30P
Manix 2 Moonglow
Paramilitary D2
Paramilitary 2 20CP
Paramilitary 2 XHP
Paramilitary 2 S3VN
Caly 3.5 Super Blue
Red Persian

and preorder on the PM2 204p

I am trying to get my hands the PM2 s90v and m390.

It's not all that tough. If you are really interested in knives and special/sprint/dealer exclusive runs, all you need to do is be obsessive about reading the forums. ;) Seriously, all it takes is checking in on the BF manufacturer sub-forumcs and/or the Spyderco website forum and you will have plenty of forewarning of upcoming sprints. I don't want to sound cocky, but I have never missed a knife I really wanted. No reason you shouldn't either. :)

I am new to the sprint run thing, and successfully pre-ordered the Green PM2. My only "in" was this forum. Nothing is kept secret, but I do see a lot of guys ordering more than one, sometimes to resell one, sometimes to have a user and a safe-queen, and sometimes to try to negotiate a trade for another sprint. There is a thread regarding the Green PM2, and the knife sold out in a little over a week I believe. If you really want one, check Spyderco's website and use that information plus BF to pre-order one and it should not be too bad to get in on it.

I've been carrying my gray paramilitary 2 since I got it.I can't carry all my sprints, butI usually find one I like, and carry it for a long time. Before I started carrying paramilitary's,I was carrying a gray calyspo jr,and I believe it was a sprint also.

I'm on this forum at least 5 times a day and never saw notices for sprint runs coming up. I'm on the Becker forum 5 times a day and missed the most recent 3 announcements about their upcoming specials. I'm also on the Spyderco forum and never see anything about their sprint or mule releases until after they have sold out.

From this day forth, for new people that might want to get in on sprint runs, there are no more sprint runs announced. I was checking my records and I think I have been on this forum for 12 or 13 years now.

I'm afraid that with the popularity of the sprint runs it will become just like concert tickets where the ordinary person will only be able to buy on the black market. IOW when the sprint runs go up for sale they will sell out before the ordinary knife enthusiast has a chance to buy them and all of you and me will be buying on the black market at 2 or 3 times original price.

First off it is not a black market, and like I said the green sold out in about a week. They are exclusive, and will sell fast, but being a member here gives you the best opportunity to get one. This is the thread I found and followed during the pre-order, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/910307-Para-Military-in-CTS-204P?highlight=cts-204p. Also, you can STILL pick up a blue PM2 with M390 straight from the retailer. Maybe, you just were un-lucky or did not search the forums very well, but it existed, and I would bet there are similar threads for every sprint run. There is no conspiracy to keep it from you or hush-hush. When I found the green one I did not search for "pm2 sprint run" I searched for CTS-204P and found it that way, so no there will not be an official announcement from Spyderco I do not believe, but again you can bet people will be talking about it.

additional info: If you look at the timeline the thread started in December right around Christmas, and the pre-order was in February. So guys were talking and salivating over this one for a while before it actually went on sale.

If you are on this or the Spyderco forum several times a week there is no way you will ever miss a Sprint you want.
You do have to read a little on the when and where, but there is always notice here. Nothing is a secret.

Even the Orange and Green Para2 took almost two weeks to sell out. There was chatter about them before and after they went up. It would have been hard to miss either unless away from a PC for 12 days.

My personal opinion is that it doesn't feel right to see it done on this particular site. By all means, people are free to do what they want to with their money and knives, but this is a community of sorts and some of the same people who buy up Sprints in order to make a profit off of this community are the same folks who found out about those Sprint Runs from this board. Also, some of those same folks are the first ones to ask questions if they need something from this site.

Just sort of feels like $#!++ing where you eat to some degree. Not that I'm accusing anyone of doing that, but I've seen a few members who post a question about an issue they're having and 10+ folks chime in to give them all the help they need (for free). Then I see that same person post an inflated-priced Sprint run in the Exchange shortly after (and do it again, and again, and again...).

Don't get me wrong, I'm OK with the market changing and selling an item for a higher amount to adjust for the market, but when you attempt to drive the market by purposely inflating a price (and buying multiples of a knife based on a pre-order that you found out about from this site... and don't contribute to the community as a whole), then it's definitely not the same thing. As far as I'm concerned, go do that on eBay or some other site that you don't depend on for news, info, and support of your knife habit.

Like I said, you're free to do what you want and there's no rules against doing it, but I wouldn't personally do it.

Not my experience with the orange PM2 and the Green PM2. There was plenty of notice as nccole and Ken44 note and I was able to pre-order both sprints even though I dont have a computer at work and check my email and the forums about once a day. Sounds like you did not search correctly or something like that. Sorry u missed it but there is no secret black market. Just BF and the spyderco.com forum members discussing when they see a dealer post a pre-order. For example I did not want the millie sprint in CF/M390. But when another 50 came in at KW the other week I knew about it from the various forums and could have got an order in had I so desired. I did not like brown but again knew about the PM2 brown scale SV35 and could have ordered it. I am the ordinary person, I just happen to belong to BF and to spyderco.com forums.

I saw that notice on the extra 58 (I think) Millie's in CF, but I got to it after they were sold out again. That one did go really fast, and may be an exception to having plenty of time, but for those few lucky ones who were online at the right time, good for them and this community paid off for them. Everyone can't be happy all the time, but I am glad some guys got in on that.

It's hard for everyone to get in on a sprint if they are sold out in 2 weeks or less! Nevertheless, from now on I'll try to buy 2 of each sprint if I can afford it then sell or trade one as soon as I get them. I use my sprints though and haven't sold one for profit yet.
