Does anyone keep their Sprints?

I bought a Sprint yesterday, but it was released about one yr ago. The Spyderco Lum Tanto. Looks like a great knife.
I do see an awful lot of orange Spyderco Para2's on the market right now, all for a bit over $200. Someone's making money.

@nccole

Can't get the pm2 m390 cause the dealer does not ship internationally. I will have to get through the forums here.

That sucks, do you have someone you can trust in the states who could buy it for you and ship it to you? That way you will not get gouged on the price in the secondary market.

I'm on this forum at least 5 times a day and never saw notices for sprint runs coming up. I'm on the Becker forum 5 times a day and missed the most recent 3 announcements about their upcoming specials. I'm also on the Spyderco forum and never see anything about their sprint or mule releases until after they have sold out.

From this day forth, for new people that might want to get in on sprint runs, there are no more sprint runs announced. I was checking my records and I think I have been on this forum for 12 or 13 years now.

I'm afraid that with the popularity of the sprint runs it will become just like concert tickets where the ordinary person will only be able to buy on the black market. IOW when the sprint runs go up for sale they will sell out before the ordinary knife enthusiast has a chance to buy them and all of you and me will be buying on the black market at 2 or 3 times original price.

All I've used to find out about sprint runs is this forum and Spyderco's forum with no trouble at all getting what I wanted there is usually a thread up about the sprint run a couple months before that sprint is even up for pre-order, for example the green Para 2 in CTS-204P there was this thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/910307-Para-Military-in-CTS-204P?highlight=204p started Dec 23, 3 months before the pre-order was open and I know the whole week the pre-order was open available this thread was on the front page, plus the three pages of posts in it from Dec-Feb, so I'm not sure how one would miss it (I use this example because this particular sprint sold out faster than any other I can recall and still there was three months to learn about it. All popular sprint runs it seems have a thread on the front page for several weeks at least before and during the pre-order, usually on both forums that's how I find out about them, one thing I will do sometimes though if possible is contact a dealer before the pre-order actually shows up on the website and start a pre-order list/let the dealer know about the pre-order if they don't yet instead of waiting until there is a pre-order list (being proactive).

I made a huge mistake by not pre-ordering the orange para 2, cause I said I was going to, then forgot about it.
I really want one.
I still don' think I'd buy an overpriced flipped one here, just on principle.
.....conversely, I forgot I pre-ordered a zt 561 from Dave, then had it in hands in about 4 days.
I personally think it is too big(for me).
If I sell it here, I'll ask $261, which is what i paid for it.
I'd just hope to put it in the XL hands of someone who really wants one.
The only variable I could wrap my brain around would be to trade it for something someone else already has, at the current 561 going rate.
or a higher end used something.....like a sebenza!

I have pre-ordered a Cryo as I want a Kershaw/Hinderer collaboration knife and have small hands so I did not order a 560/561 or 550/551 just to big for me. The cryo will be smaller. There are several dealers taking pre-orders for the cryo. I ordered thru KnifeCenter. GPknives is taking pre-orders too.

I think it's pretty hard to be in a place for 12 years and not be able to find any threads about sprint runs. It's kind of mind boggling to be hoest. Especially when there are multiple threads in various forums. No offense meant, but are you actually reading through posts?

i still have a set of the para 2 sprints but sold off my duplicates because its too much money just sitting

I find it a bit odd that so many of these sprints are appearing in the exchange immediately subsequent to their release. I would hate to think most of these are being bought purely for resale... that would just be a bit upsetting and contrary to the spirit of the hobby I would think.

Does anyone keep theirs? I know I do... well, most of them anyway. :p

The only sprint I ever sold was the Military CPM-M4, I kept all the others.

It's hard for everyone to get in on a sprint if they are sold out in 2 weeks or less! Nevertheless, from now on I'll try to buy 2 of each sprint if I can afford it then sell or trade one as soon as I get them. I use my sprints though and haven't sold one for profit yet.

The batch of M390 Military's that came up for sale seems to have sold out in a matter of hours. It was a last minute thing and lots of people would have trouble coming up with $220 for an unexpected purchase in a matter of a few hours. I saw that announcement on several different online forums too. The website selling the orange PM2's says they sold out in 12 days IIRC, and the website with the green ones said they sold out in 6 or 7 days. (working from memory so I might have gotten those numbers reversed.)

I'll repeat my prediction- Now that people are seeing how popular the sprints are and how much profit there is to be made, we will rapidly get to the point where the things are all sold before they are even announced and all of us have to pay twice or more original price in order to be able to buy one.

just to encourage you on the power of the forums to get sprint exclusive knives

I saw that one and that thread has gone crazy too. Lots of people are buying one or three or more. I'm not sure if any of them are still available or not but although I have Kershaw knives that I really like, a blue Skyline is not a very good consolation prize if you were really wanting a green or orange PM2.

This is a promising strategy. If you have bought a knife that has an inflated value, and someone else has bought a knife that has inflated value, you can almost trade straight up. I've been collecting knives for 20 years or more and I might have to pull out a few old ones to try to trade for sprints. I've been digging through my old knives to see what I can let go of. I once traded an old Dozier to Bob for 2 of his newer knives. He wanted the old one back and I wanted the newer ones.

There is one obvious solution. Sign up for the Collectors Club as an "All Varients" collector and sell the ones you don't want. Even Dealer Exclusives like the M390/CF Military go to CC members. You never have to miss a Sprint or pay inflated prices on the secondary market. Problem solved.

I have 2 sprints. One is my EDC, the other is the primary folder in my GHB.
I recently had opportunity to trade one (with cash, possibly) for a more expensive knife that I really want.
I didn't jump, because I would miss my special Spydie too much - even though I could probably replace it, and may even come out (slightly) ahead.
I really don't have the spare cash to buy duplicates, but if I ever did, it would be to keep a spare in case something happened to the first.
I have enough blades stashed in various places that not all get used much, but each is a user with a primary purpose.
I don't like to see people "flipping" them for a big markup, but that may be simply because that's not the way I operate (I'm more inclined to buy than sell, I guess.)
I'm certainly not going to condone placing controls on the free market system. If it's not worth it to you, don't buy it.
If it's not worth it to anyone, the price will come down.

On a side note, I was a little bummed I didn't get in on the green 204 PM2, but I missed it because I had just picked up the blue M390 (see EDC above.) I didn't have the cash for both, and I'm very happy with my choice.

I understand you not seeing the Skyline as a replacement for a sprint PM2, just wanted to make sure you were aware of the opportunity. I think it is a pretty cool opportunity myself. Better luck in the future.

I have 2 orange, a grey, and a carbon fiber Para 2. Probably more than $600 worth of knives. But I like them and dont plan on selling them. i bought them because I like the knives, not because I wanted to make money on them.

I'm signing up after I win the lottery. That whole winning number thing keeps eluding me, though.

I bought the orange paramilitary 2, I traded it off for a gray para 2, and it's in my pocket right now, I also ordered the green one coming out in june, I don't see anything wrong with selling the sprints, I mean hey it's your knife you payed for it do what you want. As far as the high prices go, A lot of people will buy 2 knives and sell the one to cover the cost of what they paid for two is it wrong? Well they sure do sell fast, somethings value is determined by what somebody believes it's worth and what they are willing to pay for it so if someone is happy paying 220.00 bucks for a knife that originally cost 117.00 then IMO everybody wins.

The only sprint I've sold so far was the orange para 2 because the orange was too bright, all others I keep and use.

I have not sold any knives let alone sprints. I seem to get a little attached to all the knives I buy which makes them even more difficult to let go.

I buy sprints because I don't have a local gun or knife store to go to where I can get my hands on something to try out. I figure if I'm going to buy something, it should be a knife with resale value should I not like it. That is why my brown PM2 is on the classifieds now. The orange one I will keep because I like the steel so much, maybe the knife will grow on me. I did buy the m390 sprint as an investment, but if a k294 millie comes out, that will probably be a wash. I'm half tempted to sell it now to pay for a Southfork. Spyderco sprints are hell on people with FOMO and ADD.

I have kept and used tho ones I have liked, and have sold the ones I didn't. I've kept more than I've sold.
