Does Anyone NOT Like SAK's?

I like the Victorinox Soldier. The alox models don't have a huge number of tools but in a way that makes them well-suited for EDC. The wider, thicker blade and the relatively grippy scales are nice.

I mostly use my tinker to cut cheese and cut loose threads on my clothing...other than that id rather use my leatherman....

I don't like them cause none of them have exactly what I want
Wouldn't it be cool if you could build your own, like the teddy bear store at the mall?

I used to be on balisongs and tacticals. Now I EDC a Spartan Lite. The LED is useful to search for toys my son drops in restaurants, etc.

The other tools are useful, specially the tweezer and toothpick. The blade is a real slicer being so thin and flat ground.

So, I used to look down on theam (thinking as cheap and flimsy) but now appreciate them much, I even also EDC a Bundeswehr OHT!!

I keep two.

Not due to their attributes, but nostalgia.

Yet, I do use 'em about the domicile and have no problem recommending/buying for others if they will meet the expectations of the individuals.

But, really, I can't imagine the knife-world without them. It will be a sad, sad day should Victorinox fall.

I have a few SAk's but I find I never really get to use them, Im always reaching for my leatherman wave first. And it's not becuase I dont like them, if I didnt like them I wouldn't have any.

One of my first knives as a kid was a Wenger SAK, and I moved on from there to locking folders, and then to one-handers. Never thought much of the SAK after that, and couldn't understand people's fascination with 'em.
I have a Trailmaster that never really grew on me (I bought it when I was in my built-like-a-tank-and-could-skin-one-too phase, so it didn't catch on).

Then, a couple weeks ago, I bought one on an impulse, and got hooked again. I don't know why, but I like those silly red handles. I do NOT, however, like the folding-toolbox SAKs. I think they're entirely too big to be useful.

I use my ass to cut cheese.

I don't care for SAKs either.

I have a multi-tool for my Mt Bike that I carry in my hydra-pack to which I can compare to a SAK - the tools on it are ok to use in a pinch (like when you are 20 miles from home and need to make an adjustment to something) but the tool makes no comparison to using the actual tool that the multitool is meant to replace.

Another example is I carry a small portable air pump which takes FOREVER to prime up a tire (~40 lbs) compared to my floor pump - (I carry a spare tube in a small pack under my bike seat. Again, 20 miles from home + a flat = no good!). I should mention I live in rural Iowa, you don't have to go far on a bike to be in the middle of nowhere! ;)

I'm also not a huge fan of slippies.

I can see the appeal of SAKs to gadget-lovers/gadget-tweakers thought! :)

I used to once be addicted to SAK's. I no longer am. Even though I realize they are a nice little quality tool, I just like to have the right tool for the job. I don't like to "MacGyver" my way out of or into things.

I found that when I carried a SAK that I would never use anything but the blade. Sometimes I would use scissors but in a pinch the blade would do just as well as the scissors.

The Phillips on the SAK's (if it's on the bottom) stinks. There's no good way to turn a screw in with a T-Handle driver. The can openers work fine but why use it when you have a regular can opener. Plus, if I go camping I take a regular can opener. The woodsaw would be great to get you out of a JAM but I can't think of any use for it at any other time. I would never use it and if I'm going to prune trees or bushes I would just get out my pruning saw.

I find that when you have a SAK you tend to look for things to use it on. For me that's a lot of junk to carry in your pocket to look for things to use it on..

So as far as things go, I'm no longer a lover of SAK's. I think they are "OK" but that's just about it.

I prefer to have a nice little Benchmade folder on me now. If not the Benchmade I'll carry a Buck 112.

I don't hate SAKs, but I don't love them either. Having 10 tools in one package is cool, but I don't use most of the tools. I have a SAK that I got years ago sitting around and will grab it every so often, but it isn't a regular EDC. Besides, the tools and blades on SAKs are a real pain to pull out if you like to keep your nails short.

Looks like many of us like the SAK's more for sentimental reasons than actual use. I agree that many of the so-called tools are pretty useless. I don't know how much I will use my new one, but I will have it if I need it! ;)

I like my Vic one hander, but I would like it better if it had macarta, g10 or bone/horn handles & vg10 or zdp-189 steel for the knife blades.

Also, I had to add my own pocket clip, they should be an option with the medium to large knives.

Different time and different batch of people I guess -

I like thin SAKs with 1 or 2 layers. I don't want to carry a thick SAK. I EDC a Compact most everyday but sometimes rotate in a Spartan, Tinker, or Soldier.

I have 2 SAK from back in the day. They were handy then but I find my Micra or Squirt P4 along with my edc folder serve me better now. My SAKS are now in my vehicle gove boxes and still get used.

My first-choice carry knife isn't a SAK (Spydie Cento III--I love one-handers) but I do really like them. If I'm ever going out for a while I also carry a Eurosport 2 (Vic nylon-scale Tinker variant). I also have a Vic Soldier Alox and a Vic Hunstman.

My favorite SAKs are 2-layer models. I have a genuine use for the flathead screwdriver, bottle opener, and in the case of my Eurosport the Phillips screwdriver. The Huntsman is a great knife, but I would only carry it either in a belt pouch or if I was going to be in the middle of nowhere for a while. Absolutely no interst in ones larger than that.

Actually, I know a guy with the SwisschampXL (I think that's the biggest production model) and he loves it. I don't get it, though. If I'm carrying something that huge I'd rather have more "tool" like a big Leatherman _plus_ a nice one-hander.

I'd like 'em better if the main blade was made of a better (edge-holding) steel. I suppose that's why they no longer have a place in my back-packing kit. To carry "around town" Sure.

I probably had atleast 5 of them when I was younger, I don't really care for them though. The screwdrivers never worked that well for me and I always lost the toothpick and tweezers out of them. haha

Don't even view them as knives.
Throw them into the hip pouch on a bike excursion sometimes because you never know if you won't have use for tweezers or a bottle opener... but then I never do (have a Parktool for the bike).
Gave a tiny one to my gal for her keyring, but she prefers the Jester.
