Does anyone remember a time when they liked Cold Steel knives?

I almost hate to say this but i've had several cs knives over the years and not had a poblem with any of them. one of my favorites was a little boot knife called the urban shiv, when i ordered them from cs they were on sale and i got 2 for around $30 shipping included. I've got to say though that Lt seems to be a major wiggler, his videos are funny as hell though, I took one to work and had a room full of firefighters on the floor laughing for about 30 min.

I like the Cold Steel catalogs, but the videos are irritating as hell. The music alone is enough to make me throw the DVD into a garbage bin It's revolting, repetitive, and relentless. Okay, some of the tests are legitimate (it's nice to know how strong the locks are), but other "tests" are completely fluff. Taking swipes at meat, for example, can be done with any knife of corresponding knives with similar results, except the serrated blades. They do damage, but we don't need a video of LT slashing away at the spare ribs. LT also clearly needs to work on his icy stares before slashing slabs of meat, pounding his knives through car hoods, or assuming what I'm sure he thinks is a formidible posture.

His next video should be done to the tune of "Dixie" and there should be more Confederate flags hanging around.

I only see two real problems with cold steel.
Number one is the high end stuff. Prices of massive amounts, hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I just dont feel that some of these are worth the money there asking for them. The only other thing most people have an issue with is the advertising. Its over the top and makes some exaggerated claims, but i find it entertaining some dont.

Overall ive been happy with the cold steel knives i've owned. I guess its just like with most knife companeis a question of sorting out the good stuff from the not so good.

Back from the dead! Yeah, back in 1984 I liked them (but couldn't afford one) and I still do in 2012.

I thought about this and kind of pondered, what is wrong with cold steel knives? And I honestly dont think there is too much wrong with their knives... the cheap folders and fixed blades are some pretty good deals, the expensive folders are outrageous, $300 for AUS8??? Cmon. What really turns me off is Lynn and the Cold Steel facade. One of the major things that turns me off from Cold Steel is that they say they CANT produce their products in america. Saying you chose not to and that you cant are totally different things. So many companies make great value products in the United States (Kershaw Skyline, Buck Vantage pro). Secondly, I cannot stand cold steel telling me the AUS8 is a top quality steel. The say the strive for the "sharpest and strongest knives". AUS8 is an ok steel, but nothing more and it drives me nuts when Cold Steel markets it like a super steel. But I have to say, my favorite part of Cold Steel is Lynn Thompson's outfits.... They are the best part of those videos.

Escaped into a two hour long hot bath this afternoon and set my Cold Steel Ti-Lite on the edge of the tub. Probably wouldn't have been as effective in the case of a home invasion as a Glock, for example, but it did leave me feeling a little less, you know, naked.

The diatribes against Cold Steel here continue to astound me. I can see someone being dissatisfied with quality and deciding to move on. I can see someone disagreeing with company policy or philosophy and deciding to move on.

But to get fixated in emotional rants and responses that verge on violence is an astounding reaction from supposedly adult human beings that presumably are carrying potentially lethal tools in their pockets.

I mean its okay to have strong opinions but there is a response to anything Cold Steel in some people that crosses over into wacko territory. I don't really believe that most of them are a danger to their community but at the same time I have to observe this behaviour and wonder how we are ever going to make it thru this mess we have created for ourselves.

It's sheep mentality, which people here seem to think they're immune to because of how they think of knives versus how the average person perceives them. People follow the crowd, even in a subculture such as knife lovers. When everyone says something is crap, you may think otherwise, but eventually begin to espouse the same thoughts and feel as though you came to the conclusion on your own. Anyway, I certainly listen to people when they talk about issues like blade play, poor edge retention, durability etc. I don't listen to anyone when they tell me I HAVE to buy this or that, or that a $400+ folder or fixed blade is a thousand times better than a Becker/ESEE/Spyderco/Kershaw/Benchmade. I set my own standards, and cap it at about $200-250 per knife depending on how much I want it. Other people have their own preferences, and are entitled to buy what they want. That doesn't make their knives better at that higher price, only more collectible and rare.

Cold Steel does have a very cheesy approach, thanks to Lynn and what I assume are the like-minded people he surrounds himself with; overweight suburban daydreamers who think they are warriors and carefully trim their image as best they can to look a certain way. I pull no punches with my thoughts on that. However the knives can be pretty awesome.

Also, to be honest, anyone who doesn't like the idea of handling things like Samburu spears, tomahawks, broadswords etc is, in my opinion, a blade snob. Simply put, some of the stranger offerings from CS give us a chance to handle versions of traditional weapons that we might not otherwise see outside of customs, and some of their simpler designs are honestly quite smooth to open and/or use and end up being pretty strong. In these cases, as with say the Recon 1 and the Voyager, the only issue I'd have is a wish for a slightly better steel so as not to have to sharpen quite so often. Anyway, to provide an epilogue for this book, I'll say this. Buy what you like, and if it works for you, enjoy it. Haters gonna hate.

I like Cold Steel, Spyderco, lobster, Benchmade, long walks on the beach, Strider, CRK, Swamp Rat Knives, shrimp, books, and brown paper packages wrapped up in string (if they have knives in them).

You can like more than one thing.

some things should remain dead, this thread bein' one of "em.

Lockin' this thread, maybe in five years I'll dust it off and repost to see if ya'll had a change of feelin' about CS.
