Does anyone use their limited edition/sprint run knives?

Do you use your LE knives?

Hey guys, I recently bought a Benchmade Ares 730 limited edition in M390. I haven't got it yet, but am contemplating whether to use it or make it a safe queen for collection. It will be my first limited edition knife. Am I crazy for wanting to actually use it? I'm don't know much about limited editions. Is this a particular knife that will become rare and skyrocket in price? I didn't buy it for the limited edition factor, more for the design and blade steel.

So besides all that, do you guys collect or use your sprint run/LE knives?

I have a couple of Manix 2 sprints, an Orange S30V one and a Black BD30P one. They both get used pretty thoroughly. I don't see the point in owning a knife and not using it.

I would wait a bit and see what happens on the both the secondary market and feebay.
IMO many factors influence the post purchase value

  • number in the run
  • configuration
  • who's making it
  • demand for reg. production models
  • which way the wind is blowing

I carry multiple sprint runs/limited edition knives, but there are a few I keep just to collect as well.

I've got a Sprint Run M390/CF Military in my back pocket right now. It replaced a hybrid made with the blade from the M4 sprint in the CF handle from the S90V sprint I wore out.

I bought a brown para2 but couldn't decide whether to carry it or not, but this was mostly because I couldn't decide if the brown one was the one that I wanted or if I should spend a little more and get the blue one. I finally decided to buy the blue one and found one on the sales forum. As soon as it came in I put it in my pocket before I had a chance to think about it and talk myself out of it. My knives don't get hard use but I do carry them and use them.

I don't see anything wrong with keeping a few knives NIB. especially if you think there's a possibility to sell them down the road. Just as long as you enjoy the knife you ARE using. For example, I own a couple limited edition AFCK's in M390 that I wont use. Because I've seen how the price of an AFCK goes up when they're not in production. especially in those materials, I know its a good investment. And its hard to recover your funds if the knife is used and scratched.
But I really like that particular knife, so I bought a used one on the secondary market and I carry it all the time.

I use them. Unless the knife doesn't do anything for me, then I post it for trade to see if I can get something else. But now that I've moved into the midtech and custom areas, I really don't bother with sprints or limited editions anymore. However...I do have an itch for another Tilt....however, a DLC one.

If it doesn't get used...it gets sold/traded. One of my favorite go to knives is my cf/M390 Milie.

I use mine.

If keeping them put away and in perfect, unused condition makes a person happy, then by all means.

I don't see many people getting rich from investing in knives, so I just buy and use them and enjoy them being special.

A special knife that has been used is still special. ;^)

I'm not a collector, so I carry what I own. I rotated between my CF s90v and my green D2 military exclusively for ~ 4 years until I picked up a ZT 0561 a few weeks back.

Absolutely carry it. I also have one of the m390 730s and carry it usually a couple times a week. Knives are meant to be used. What's the point of expensive fancy super steels like m390 if you aren't going to actually use it to get the benefits of the better steel?

Well said. You have to flip a lot of sr/le knives to get rich at it. Use 'em.

The only sprint I have is the Brown S35VN Paramilitary 2, I try to use it as much as I can. It is very sharp and takes a great edge.

I have bought many limited editions and sprint runs and I carry, use and sharpen them all.
To me the joy is in the using.

Surely you've seen the people that buy 10 of the Spyderco Sprints for the original low price and then sell them on our sales forum for twice that amount. I've seen sales posts with photos of 5 or more identical knives for sale. Granted a quick $1000 profit won't make you rich considering how infrequently the sprint runs come out but it makes you a few extra bucks to buy more knives with.

I think the main reason to not use an expensive knife that you bought is profit. There are some people who like to keep the knife in good shape in order to enjoy looking at it, whether they use it or not. I use mine but I still want to keep them in good shape so I'm not going to scrape mud off of truck tires with them.
