Does "pre-order" = "For sale"?

To me the answer is no. "For sale" means you can actually but the product, not be put on a list and get one if there is enough.

What say you?

pre order means that you are putting yourself in line for one when it comes available. It does not mean for sale now or that you might get one but that you will in the future, however long it takes. only pre order if you plan on buying when it is available.

I agree. In that case, I have pre-ordored all my custom knives from the maker... except Demko. He wouldn't take payment until it is ready.

This is basically the universal answer I've come to understand.
Pre = Before
Sale = Read to trade for Cash
A preorder does not mean you are guaranteed a knife all the time.

This is the way I see it:

Pre-Order - an order placed on a knife scheduled to be made, usually no down payment is required.

To place an Order - making a deal with a knifemaker to have a knife built, some down payment is often required.

For Sale - a knife that is available for delivery, a fixed price is usually set.
