Does spyderco have something like this?

I'm looking for a spyderco tenacious with a black blade and liners, but coyote tan (desert tan) g10 scales. I want the scales to look stock, I don't want some custom thing with a funky pattern. Is that something i'd be able to find?

If you're not stuck on a Spyderco, the Ontario RAT 1/2 (same design, just different sizes) are in the same price range (a bit cheaper usually), are excellent performers, and come in Coyote Brown (and a few other colors) with both coated and uncoated blades.

The ESEE Avispa and Zancudo are similar as well, and come in Desert Tan and a few other colors, once again at roughly the same price range ($25-35).

Good luck :).

Hmm I'll have to think about it. I liked the rat, but it was far too heavy IMO for edc. I'll have to check the other 2. Thanks!

Funny, I can't see the link when its in your normal post, but when I reply I see the link, and can see the actual link, and so I now know what you're talking about.

The RAT 1 was too heavy for you though? Its only .9oz heavier than the Tenacious, and is a fair bit larger. The RAT 2 is a bit smaller, and weighs in at 2.9oz (1.2 oz lighter than the tenacious).

Anyway, I was just trying to save you some cash, since custom scales for a tenacious might cost more than some of these other knives (depending on if the color, or the knife profile was more important to you).

Another inexpensive light knife that comes in colors like that is the Kabar Dozier. Usually runs about $20-25, comes in OD, Coyote Brown, and a few colors as well.

Anyway, good luck with the hunt :).

Actually yeah, I think I was thinking of something else, not the rat 1. Sorry for the confusion. 5 oz doesn't seem all that heavy. I've heard good things about it, so I might pick one up

So are you buying another knife behind your mom's back or did she throw your old one out but allow you to get another..?

No, I'm not going to buy it behind her back. I wasn't even going to buy it lol. When I said "pick one up", I meant keep an eye on it. Sorry for the confusion. She gave me back my spyderco BTW.

Thanks man. I showed her the other thread, and she agreed to give it back. My dad has it now, and I have to ask every time I need it, but its a fair compromise.

I was curious about this as well, and am glad to hear that you and your parents got something figured out (I read through, but didn't respond to your other thread).

I really do think that in your case, perception is a huge deal, as you're trying to help your parents understand it is a tool to you. And, in that way, I think the uncoated blades, and different handle colors can really help (even if you don't get this now) "sell" the idea that this is just a tool.

And again when you do get to use it, use it with almost exaggerated safety (two hand opening, or at least slowly opening, keeping well clear of others when cutting, etc) and I think over time they'll come around :). Another thing that isn't related to this thread (but is to your other one), but try to learn to use things like the Kitchen knives correctly/safely. That scores lots of mom points :D.

But yes, the RAT 1/2 are both great value EDC blades (same category as the Tenacious), so when you get older/when your parents are ok with it, give it a shot.

Cheers :).
