My Griptilian has side to side blade play and I cant not get a sweet spot unless I torc the screw all the way down so is it just expected for grips to have side to side blade play? If anyone has a grip does yours have side to side blade play?

Right there's your answer. As long as it still opens smoothly when the pivot is tightened, it should be fine.

I have two and neither one has blade play, they are solid. Do you think it
might need a cleaning in and around the pivot area?
If you take a finger and put it on one side of the blade and your thumb on
the other side you can feel play?

My experience getting the right ratio of smooth/solid vs loose/pi$$ed off, can be a very tiny adjustment of the pivot bolt (think 10 degrees or less out of a 360 degree full turn).

I just sent it to benchmade for blade off centering and blade play and they said they rebuilt the pivot so its clean. And yes if I put my finger and thumb on the blade I feel play.

They will get you taken care of.

I could be wrong, but I think PittRules55 is saying that he received it back after the new pivot and now there is play in the blade.

I have two Grips and both lock up solid.

Is this an old knife or a newer one?
The reason I ask is an older can have more wear around the pivot that could be causing it, but a new one should not have any play at all.

If the knife is relatively new, it sounds like you may be turning the pivot screw too far for adjustment.
Literally; the tinyest movement will make a difference. If you're doing 1/4 or even 1/8th turns, that's way too much.
I'd also recommend making sure the rest of the screws are snug.

If all else fails I think RevDevil is right; BM should make it right for you. I find it surprising that they sent your blade back with play.

I have a mini grip that is new that has horizontal play. I've tried forever to eliminate it.

Your right about getting it back from the warrenty depot. Its a couple of months old but never used before and BM also said they rebuilt the pivot area to fix blade off centering.

I am not turning it far at all and unless its screwed down to where you cannot open/close the knife there is still side to side play. There is side to side play if you hold it at the tip where the knife is tightened to where it can actually open and close, if you hold it a the thumb studs theres no play that i can detect but if i hold it near the tips theres play.

Blade play is not normal with Griptilians.

I have over a dozen variants but have never had one with which I couldn't eliminate any play, if there was any to begin with.

Drop the blade out, clean the tang and washers, lube with a good oil, reassemble, and adjust the pivot tension (ideally with some blue Loctite on the pivot screw. You should find the sweet spot - if not send it back to Benchmade for inspection.

I've owned several. Large and Mini. None of them had any play. Rock solid every time.

My Griptilain has had play since day one.

I have taken it apart , it is spotless like all my knives. I have fiddled with the pivot and the other retainer screws , sometimes those can also determine blade play depending on how tight they are.

I doubt the knife will ever fail on my but it is too annoying to be in the EDC lineup so it sits in my trucks first aid kit , I dont like to bother with sending knives back and having them possilbly return the same way.

:)
