Does the Benchmade Griptilian always have bladeplay?

The looser the blade, the quicker the blade. I like mine just a bit loose.

I had a new mini-grip and it was in my pocket. I was walking and I heard a clicking sound. I pulled it out of my pocket and the blade was so loose it was rattling back and forth between the liners. I took the pivot screw out and put blue Loc-Tite on the threads. I was then able to make micro adjustments to the screw to lock it in exactly where I wanted it. That was a couple of years ago, it hasn't budged and no play.

I've owned 3 and none had play. Send it back.

I am VERY particular about blade play and I sent back my Benchmade 710 for repairs 3 times until they fixed the vertical bladeplay. I think on my third try they just sent me a replacement :)

try tightening it to where the blade play is just gone. it should be a little stiff, but not too bad.

then break it in by opening and closing it over and over, it should smooth out after a few hundred cycles, this always worked for me.

also, use a drop of locktite on the pivot screw so that it won't loosen up over time.

I have three also and none have any play. My Ritter Mini Grip in particular is the smoothest opening of the three and locks up tight. It's odd that you guys are having such trouble eliminating the side to side play you guys are experiencing.
Good luck fixing the problem, I know what a PITA it can be. I wanted to buy a SOG Flash 2 at the local Bass Pro Outlet but the play was sooo bad and the knife so over-priced that I just walked away.

Sending the knife back to Benchmade can be time consuming, and yes the blade should not have any play, yet be loose enough to not bind. If you can tighten the pivot completely and back it off slowly and not have any play it's only a matter of making tiny turns to the left to set it to your liking.

One thing I use often for pivots that back off on "their own" is BLUE Loc-Tite, the 242 formula. Pull the pivot bolt out and clean the threads with rubbing alcohol or acetone to remove any oil residue and put one or two small drops on the threads and reinsert the bolt - then reset the tension to your liking. Loc-Tite takes about 12 hours to set and you should be good to go.

Hope that helps.

Ya I will try that thanks.

This is what worked for me, but make sure you use the blue loctite. Without it, mine would just loosen up after a few days of use.

It kinda worked but if i hold it at the tip I can just feel some.

My Griptilian has side to side blade play and I cant not get a sweet spot unless I torc the screw all the way down so is it just expected for grips to have side to side blade play? If anyone has a grip does yours have side to side blade play?
I have 2 and blade play in both of them. I don't know what it is about the Benchmade Mini Griptilian, but a small degree of vertical and horizontal blade play appear to be the norm for this knife. It doesn't affect performance, but it's just a OCD thing with me. I love the knife, but it's not my favorite because of this issue.

Man some people are anal about this...I get it, sometimes, but the OP did say if he holds it near the thumb studs he can't detect any play...only if he hold it by the tip...to me that means it isn't even really "blade play" but just the tiniest click of movement...you can literally get that on almost any knife. I think I only have 2 knives out of 20 that I can't feel at least a tiny click of movement.

I really don't have that many that don't have some blade play, but the mini grip has more than the others. However, I've got 2 Ontario Rat II's with no blade play at all. I love the grip's design, but it just seems like there shouldn't be as much blade play as there is. Apparently, some people don't have this problem with theirs.

Side note.

Most of my cheapo knives (Kershaws, etc) don't have blade play. But many of my higher end knives have had some play.

Kinda funny.
