I'm a car salesman, and I carry a knife every day for opening boxes of parts, etc. A lot of my co-workers carry them too, but they all carry your typical gas station special, which is understandable. They all know I'm a knife nut, because I love showing off new ones, and they all love looking. There are two things that almost always happen when I show one of them a new knife. First, they all like to open a folder half way, and then whip it out as hard as they possibly can... why? It's like lightning in my brain. What is the purpose of this? The other thing they do, and I have no idea why... If it's a liner lock or a frame lock, for some reason, they attempt to unlock the knife by aggressively shoving the lock further into the knife, causing the lock bar to get stuck. I can understand not knowing how an axis lock works just by looking at it, or anything else like that... but really, why is that so hard to figure out? I wish they would take a little time to look at the lock. I'm typing this because my boss literally just whipped my knife out, causing the liner lock to travel really far over, and then jammed it further in while trying to unlock it... I suppose I should just stop letting them handle my knives.

I know what you mean about pushing the frame lock to hard. I've seen people do that. And the aggressive wrist flick is annoying. No one touches my knives.

Most of mine are fairly hard use knives and can handle a little moron abuse but what gets me is the filthy SOB that spits on his arm hair and shaves off a disgusting section of greezy arm pelt.
Man, I use these things on my food. :barf:

The reason they don't do it right might be tunnel vision.
It's a sharp object and they want to be careful or they get cut right into the hospital (in their mind) Add to that the pressure of having to close something to not look like an incapable baby especially if the other guys opens and closes it so effortlessly. With all that it's hard to look at something and identify how it works. In their own 4 walls alone and relaxed I'm sure most non knife nuts would have no issue figuring out something as simple.

Or when the guy flicks it open like he's a badass, looks it over then says "how do you close it." I see this mostly on frame locks.

I don't let others borrow my stuff, but then again I don't ask to borrow other peoples stuff either.

Easier for a non knife nut to break a frame/liner lock than a lockback, ball bearing lock, axis lock, button lock, etc. Lol frame locks

For real though, I never let anyone handle my knife, except people who I can tell won't try to be batman. Unpredictable creatures they are, better off giving them a pair of kids scissors so they don't damage the equipment

It annoys the living crap out of me also when people do the wrist flip. I assume its an inherent "cool guy" thing since I have yet to see a woman do that.
I still haven't figured out why people can never figure out a liner or frame lock.

But end of the day, I rarely let people use my knives unless I know exactly what they're using it on. Last time, my professor asked to use mine to open up a package that was full of chocolate to share with the whole class.

I won't even let my old man touch my axes. Rehung one and he used it to chop out roots.

Don't let idiots handle your knives. I don't lend out my knives. I KNOW who I CAN let handle my knives, and to whom I can't. It really is THAT simple.

Not much different than letting someone who has never played golf swing a club, someone who has never played baseball swing a bat, someone who has never sharpened a knife try to sharpen a knife, someone who has never baked try to make a loaf of bread, someone who has never used a manual transmission try to shift gears, someone who has had no legal training attempt to represent himself in court, etc., etc., etc. Why get upset about it? Sheesh.

Yea the wrist flick thing is like a mandatory deployment method of anyone who thinks they know or wants to seem like they know about knives.

I talk about knives with a few guys at work and couple of them did this until I told them in my usually smart ass way that they were being stupid. They don't do it any more. One if the guys even told me that a few customers have flinched when he whips out his knife and flick it open. I told him he was the reason that stupid no weapons rules are in soo many work places.

try showing them your new Opinel No. 8.

Non-knife people (and a lot of knife people, unfortunitally) see knives flicked open in movies and on TV shows, (or in promotional videos) and think that is the "proper" way to open a knife.

If it keeps happen what is to be learned? Sounds like they won't learn to handle a knife properly sooo......

Why not carry a small fixed blade?
Or get an Okapi 907.

It sounds like those guys are stuck in junior high school. Do they rev the engines in all of the cars too?
