Does This Look Right? Opinions Please.

The tip definitely looks "off" to me. And I don't think sharpening will fix it. Nor do I believe a person should have to "fix" a brand new knife, especially one that cost $400, regardless of what type of use the knife was designed for, or what the buyer intends to do with it.

For $400 I think a buyer deserves to be happy with their purchase, and I don't think the OP is being nit-picky or unreasonable.

I would send it back. And I say that as someone who has "fixed" a few knives rather than go through the hassle of sending them back.

Very well-put...and I couldn't agree more.

Mr. Winkler likes his 80CRV2, and that's great. He's the knifemaker and I'm not. So, I respect his respect of that steel.

And, with that (*and in my humble opinion), 80CRV2 is a great steel, but it ain't exactly kryptonite. So, I would reckon that when most consumers pay the prices that he asks for his blades, they are doing so because they're buying a "Winkler" and his reputation. I'm certainly not infallible, but do own a coupla' fixies. (*to say the least). And, when I could mistake that grind for a $70 mass produced RD-6, that says a bit about the imperfection of it.

Like you, I agree that that particular knife needs to go back and be made "right". (*Even with some of the "Best", mistakes/oversights make their way out of the shop. I'm sure, because of their reputation, Winkler Knives would be more than happy to make good on it...and a Consumer has the responsibility of allowing them that opportunity, in my opinion)

...and I say that as someone who owns a few Winklers.

Thanks for all the great comments and opinions. As I said earlier, I have already decided to return the knife for a replacement but it is interesting and fun to see other people's opinions - that's why we're here, right? Next time you hear from me I will be telling you all how happy I am with my new knife.(fingers crossed) :)

I spend a lot of time in the outdoors and the Winkler Survival Striker is like the knife I have been waiting for! I love the idea of a razor sharp blade and a hammer combined in a package that I can beat the hell out of and not worry about. The fire starting capability is just a bonus and something I may never use except for fun, but it's cool.

I think you'll be quite pleased with the outcome.

My Winkler "Utility Crushers" regularly see rotation in my "user" fixies...and I've beat 'em like red-headed stepchildren...

I was just having fun with the dramatic, lets play a game post. I'm all for asking for advice and I'm really for letting people know if a knife company puts out flawed blades. Some people like to protect companies like its some sort of chivalry. That said, surely you understand posting a pic with no perspective is the least effective way to judge if its bent or improperly ground. A strait edge of some sort is the way to go, then we'll say if we would return it:)
Actually I wasn't trying to create a "lets play a game post". I thought that revealing the brand would influence viewer's opinions and, based on some of the comments, that appears to be the case.

Well, here's an interesting development. I called The Knife Connection, the dealer from whom I purchased my Winkler, and they said no problem - return it, they have 3 more in stock and they will send me another. I asked if they could please check out the other three to make sure there is no problem with the replacement. Got a phone call right back and they said that all 3 knives had the same problem - a slight bend to the left in the tip. I have sent the knife back. I tried to call Winkler and got a message from Verizon that the call could not be completed. Sent them an email with photo so we'll see what happens.

I really like that knife so I hope this issue somehow gets resolved. More to follow.

What's so awesome about it? Looks like a plain jane knife to me. My Carothers DEK1 - that's awesome.

We get it, Carothers make fantastic knives and you love yours, but how many times are you going to post pics of it or recommend one in completely unrelated threads?

OP..“I’m looking for a well made folder”
You..”What you need a fixed blade…here’s mine, ain’t she beautiful?”

I was mainly just asking a question. That's why I used a thumbnail. I think that's the first time that I've done that. I can delete it if it bothers you.

I removed it - I don't want to sound rude.

I really like Winklers. I went with Carothers because of the steel but a Winkler is on my short list.

What kind of steel does the Winkler have, and how thick is it? Do they use a special type of micarta for the scales?

It’s in 80crv2, which is what Winkler usually uses, and the stock thickness is 0.30”

Thanks. That's pretty thick steel. They do have a nice rugged look. I can see how that would be appealing to some folks. 80crv2 sounds like some pretty good steel.

It is pretty good steel and easily sharpened. I really like the design of Winklers although I think they could use thinner blade stock on some of them.

That’s strange, I’ve never had a problem calling them over many, many years.

Sure you dialed the right number, problems in your area with your carrier?

I agree that is strange, but I think the bigger issue is that the other 3 Winkler Survival Strikers in stock at Knife Connection have the same problem! Apparently Knife connection has been in communication with Winkler and they acknowledged receiving my email and photo(but I have not heard back from them). I have sent the knife back to Knife Connection and they are going to send all four of the Winkler Survival knives back to Winkler. Now I wait.

Of course the easiest course of action for me would be to cancel my order and move on, but I really like that knife!
