Dogfather: Gross Abuse (Pics. Dialup Beware.)

good review. I can't wait to abuse mine. The edge on mine is very thin. I was very surprised at how thin the edge was.

The concrete you hacked on, it appears to be a pipe. If it is a cement pipe that is a great idea as concrete pipes have to be tough and are very consistent compared to normal layed concrete.

Great review I have a DF in the mail and am looking forward to getting it even more now. I found the fact that you could not bend it more interesting than the cement chopping because S7 is supposed to be tough but not as strong as say infi.

Great review! Thanks for the informative testing and the awesome pics.

Just for clarity, the Dog Fathers are CNC ground to a .030" edge thickness prior to sharpening. Below is a pic of a digital caliper set at .0975" and a line that was scored up on the grind bevel to show how high up on the grind you must go before reaching this thickness. You don't reach this thickness until you are approximately 5/16" or .312" from the edge.

Thanks,

Dan

Dear God. I ground quite a bit further than I'd thought...

Thanks for the info, Dan. You probably already know how I feel about the knife. :)

Thanks for the clarification on the thickness issue. That makes quite a difference. Dave- according to the line scribed on that blade in Dan's post, it looks like your new edge bevel must actually be higher up than the choil!

:) You took off 5/16"?? Or did you simply convex it to that point, which is a different monster....Taking off the full 5/16 may be a good idea if you had any fractures, but i would have fully convexed the whole blade after doing so to retain the same geometry as the original blade.

Something just ocurred to me: are the official measurements counting the thickness of the coating? The reason that I ask is that the website mentions a thickness of .275", while mine is just about .3" at the spine. I'd figured that that was due to the thickness of the coating but it wouldn't hurt to double check.

I don't think I took quite that much off...I still have a choil, after all. ;) I'm getting ready to go to sleep now, but I'll take a picture of it tomorrow or the next day. I actually did consider convexing the whole thing but I'm a bit partial to the finish.

I'd hate to think my calipers are off. I measure COL with those. :o That would explain some things, though...

Tony, I used a #80 belt until I was happy with the geometry, then cleaned things up with a #320, 40 micron and 9 micron belt in that order; this ground easily enough that I was able to skip a few steps. (I normally do a few more steps.) I did the final polish with a leather belt charged with chromium oxide.

Sometimes I go further but I consider the ability to shave and cut paper to be sharp enough for a knife of this size. It's not a precision instrument, it's a big chopper. It's probably more polished than it needs to be already.

I lied about doing it tomorrow. Here's a pic from one minute ago:

The darker gray on the edge is oil and dirt smears.

Perhaps my measurements were off? I obviously went down a few mm but I don't think that I ground down too far.

Great thread and good test! One question, when regrinding the edge how do you make sure the edge does not overheat? I know what I do, but just curious about your technique. Thanks

BTW, I have a DF on the way. Now I don't have to test it to the same level you took it. Works for me. :)

He grinds until the rubber on the handle gets to hot to hold and then dunks it in liquid Nitrogen.:D
:D

Cobalt - Hey, that's what I do too. You have to be careful though because if the Resiprene gets too hot it gets sticky and then you can't drop it in the liquid nitro. Makes for a very messy situation. :D

I was really suprised to see the other thread posted here, about the Dog Father, a day of coincidences I guess, but I'll get to that later! First off, I had the afternoon off, and thought that since I was having so much fun on blade forums lately, I would give something back to the Forum and take care of some much needed yard work. We had an ice storm down here in TX a while back, and a small tree in my front yard paid the price of being to small. I thought that this is a great oppertunity to test my blades. I also wanted to settle an issue I've had for a while, is the new breed of high priced knives really that much better than what I grew up with? I have a small collection of large choppers and bowies, I decided to see if my old school knives would do as well as my new school stuff. Sooo...on the old school team, we have: Cold steel, Trailmaster, Carbon V and Gerber Bowie (blade unknown to me?) and on the New School team....the Swamp Rat, Battle Rat and the Scrap Yard, Dog Father. This is good stuff. The tree started the afternoon as a 4' high stump ( I chopped it to this length with an old beater Kukri, and the blade lost several chunks...Japanese Stainless Sucks when hollow ground) the tree is about 3.5" thick. I am no expert on tree's, but the wood was pretty tough stuff. I tried something different to start, my RAT-7 D2, it did fine, it's just so darn light it took for ever (9 minutes) to take of about a 5" section. OK...Starting the competition is the Gerber, it takes the 3.5 like a champ at 3 minutes...next up is the Swamp Rat, it makes easy work of this tree at about the same, 3 minutes....(I should point out, I was swinging about mid power, but I am a big guy..240lbs) next up..the Cold Steel..easily the winner so far, it even had a knot to go through, and was the most comfortable on the hand. And finally, the big boy..Scrap Yard, Dog Father..I just got this puppy in the mail, and was thrilled....YEAH..that didn't last long! About 1 minute in I hear a crunch and think..Oh shit, no way..I look down, and there is a 1/4 in chunk missing from the blade!!!! What the F*$K??? I guess that either I got the one bad one out there, or I was on the right track to begin with...a good knife is a good knife, and all the hubbub is B.S. I thought about the test, I was on a small tree, I had chopped stuff like this all my life out camping, and never had my old dogs fail me..I went on the bandwagon, and got burned....tell me I'm crazy..I was there, I saw it happen, a big time failure, from a "GREAT" knife, well it just got its panties torn off by a COLD STEEL...I am not for or against any knife...I like them all, and to be honest..my favorite is the Gerber..It just feels good in my hand. But I just shelled out about $200 bucks for the Dog, and it doesn't make it through 1 minute of mediocre chopping at best. I expect a big time amount of people asking what I really did to the knife, so I'm glad I took pics of the whole trial. Really guys...this was about me having some fun with my knives, and i'm not even that pissed, I just am really suprised, because I honestly thought I had saved the best for last. Gene:) pics coming in a minute, I just couldn't wait to write the thread....hold on! DUH..edit..I was still in this thread..Sorry...I wanted my own thread, shit....anybody know how to move this shit over to a new thread..sorry..dang it..lol

Gene,

Obviously this failure is not only only unexpected, it is unacceptable. We can't control the quality of the steel during its manufacture, although we do try, and it appears as though that chip might have been caused by an air pocket or defect in the steel. We have subjected the Dogs to enormous abuse and have no reason to doubt their performance abilities.

Please do not condemn the entire Scrap Yard line. Your knife is covered by our warranty. No questions asked.

We apologize for the inconvenience and are certain that your replacement blade will perform as you expected.

Dan Busse :)

Excellent response Dan. However, lets see the pics from Gunknifenut first. Making a post like that requires some responsible follow-up. He may be legit and then again he may have an axe to grind, so to speak. I would like to see the evidence.

Okay, I see the other thread with the pics. It does look like an imperfection in the steel.

More of the fantastic Busse customer service we all love. Way to go Dan. So far my DF is chopping like a champ.

I had the afternoon off, and thought that since I was having so much fun on blade forums lately, I would give something back to the Forum and take care of some much needed yard work.

Yes, I noticed how you joined in june 2006 and you have posted all your 79 posts in the last month and then your DF Broke thread in short order. That does look suspicious. But in the last year, I have noticed this and all these short posters seem to gravitate to the busse family and then do something to attempt to denigrate the name. Wicked1 was a perfect example. Funny thing is that they never win. I am not saying you are one, but it does smell funny.

..Oh shit, no way..I look down, and there is a 1/4 in chunk missing from the blade!!!! What the F*$K??? I guess that either I got the one bad one out there, or I was on the right track to begin with...a good knife is a good knife, and all the hubbub is B.S.

all the hubub is BS? Wow, you have one fracture, scrapyard knives have been already used by others and you post words like this certainly not endearing you to anyone who sees it as bias

I thought about the test, I was on a small tree, I had chopped stuff like this all my life out camping, and never had my old dogs fail me..I went on the bandwagon, and got burned....tell me I'm crazy..I was there, I saw it happen, a big time failure, from a "GREAT" knife, well it just got its panties torn off by a COLD STEEL...

Panties torn off by COLD STEEL? Again one blade damaged and here you are slamming again and talking crap, when everyone knows how much crap Carbon V really is.

I am not for or against any knife...I like them all, and to be honest..my favorite is the Gerber..It just feels good in my hand.

Not against any knife but words like hubbub or Panties torn off sure doesn't seem unbiased.

But I just shelled out about $200 bucks for the Dog, and it doesn't make it through 1 minute of mediocre chopping at best.

Again more hype from you. almost like you were writting a commercial for someone else.

I expect a big time amount of people asking what I really did to the knife, so I'm glad I took pics of the whole trial. Really guys...this was about me having some fun with my knives, and i'm not even that pissed, I just am really suprised, because I honestly thought I had saved the best for last. Gene:)

I think many of us will be spending a huge amount of time trying to figure out what you did as well as pictures never tell the whole story just the end result.

But considering the pictures that Dan posted of the DF abuse earlier and what was done to one here, I will go with that.

But I have to tell you this has me thinking now, that Blade 2007 is going to be real fun. I think there will be many broken knives being seen by everyone there to include Cold Steel and Gerber.

Radiused transitions on the Busses family knives and square transition on the COLD STEEL

busse-tm-tangs.jpg

And this is what happens to COLD STEEL when you use it

BustedRecon720.jpg

I'd guess that there's a flaw with that one. I did considerably less damage to mine and I was beating on concrete for several minutes straight to do it.

I did not know that the tang's corners were radiused but I'm pleased to see that.

Steelhed, I don't wear gloves while grinding and I keep my fingers on the steel. My skin will burn long before the steel does. I also have a bucket of water next to the grinder. Use the right grit for the job, keep the metal moving, and dunk it whenever it feels warm.
