Doggie!

Ha! Ndog...nice work, you have him reading useful self-help booklets. I'm pretty sure the only manual our pups have read is 'How To Train Your Humans.'

:)

That is chapter two greenw! He aced that one! The aggression chapter he just cant quite grasp. Must be a page missing or something? Thats probably what saved his life tho. He is a hurricane Rita rescue dog but Im the one who rescued him. I pulled him from the bayou as about three alligators where hanging out. I wouldnt be surprised if all three of them gators had a chunk out of them. For that his name is Boudreaux.

my friend tom hebert from loosiana had a friend named boudreaux.

he was the best shot in the bayeux. he'd go out in his pee-roug dock hunting in the mornin with his trusty two hole shoots gun, and come back in the evening with twenty docks (all mallards). tom'd ask him how many shells did that lot take? ol boudreaux would say, just the one, it has twenty beebees innit. this went on for a while, tom said he never believed him, so one day he challenged him to prove it. they went out together that day, a flock of docks came a-flyin by, ol' boudreaux let rip with the two hole and nineteen docks fell out of the sky. tom shouted 'i knew it, only 19"!

ol' boudreaux pointed to a mallard franticly duckin and divin all over the sky, followed closely by the last beebee, and said "just wait a minute".

i know it's true because tom showed me the two hole shoots gun he'd inherited from ol' boudreaux when he passed over the bridge.

Yo Man...watchout...here comes GreenW...he plants trees...

Have a great day in the sun, let us know how hot it is down in TX, as here it's all snow flakes and overcast blah...

Good one Kronk! Theres a lot of Boudreax stories around these parts! I can almost picture what happened to my Boudreaux. I can see a family in their station wagon with the last of their possessions and a loaf of bread and peanut butter backed up in traffic for hours on the interstate trying to evacuate. Mom decides to make a p'nut butter sandwich from the last of their food for all the kids but the pnut butter is gone and the bread is scattered all over the back seat. They probably got so tired of all his yappy barking and picking up all the pieces of everything he chewed up since including the back seat that they threw him out on his own to fend for himself. My mother in law lived 25 feet from the water where across the bayou there was a seafood restaurant with a deck over the water. Thats were I found him. The big deal at this restauraunt "The Boondocks" was to sit out on the deck and feed the alligators hushpuppies and french fries. Well thats were he was swimming around. There's usually dozens of gators around but only about three visible ones that day. Anyway that was many years ago and hes got it pretty good now. I think he is about 14 in people years and maybe a few days in Dragon years.

You got bayou's in central Texas, I thought that was only close to the big water. Maybe I don't really know what a real bayou is?

Swamp I was thinking.

i heard the NOLA poleece were stopping people who were leaving and not allowing them to take any pets, they were all confiscated and shipped to a holding station. afterwards people were not allowed to go get their pets back. hence the large no.needing re-homing. they were also confiscating any weapons, under orders from the mayor (a democrat). they also hired security people who went house to house to drive people out and take their guns, they had those convenient registration documents to let them know exactly who to go to. criminals of course being law abiding citizens did not have any guns because that would be illegal. i once owned a house in NOLA 1969-70, the neighbourhood is now unrecognisable, it had all been washed away.

p.s. - lived in east texas (baytown) for a few years, some parts were rather damp, enough channels to float a duck boat while you were hunting. some real bayous on the way down to galveston along the coast.

the area where they defeated santa anna (san jacinto) was mostly swamp.

central texas, not so much. bit dry, i recall. friendswood, so. of houston was especially dry.

Too bad we couldn't have moved all democrats into that neighborhood before it washed away. A win/win to me.

No more political from me, had enough of it the last 6 years give or take.

When we have a blizzard shut down some part of the electrical grid and folks have to make it to the firestation for cots and coffee for a few days we've brought more than a few people on the backs of the snowmobiles with their furry family members. The state emergency policy says no pets at the shelters AND I don't ever remember anyone trying to enforce that.
My youngest daughter has her own doggie walking business these last 3 years and she has compiled a 'check' list of seniors, seniors with pets and pets that may be stranded at homes if the humans are stranded away for any relevant period of time.

When the ice storm hit a few years back power was out for over 2 weeks for some folks, it was cold. The people at the main shelter and the pups and cats and a ferret and a Daygu(whatever that really is) were very well loved by all. Even one lady with bad allergies was cuddled up more than once.

Your daughter is a rock star in my book. That's what it's all about. Taking care of one another weather it's folks or pets.

Not FEMA detention camps with total disregard for pets and the elderly.

Thanks, Bawanna, she and her sister are the very best of us. :)

I hear you about the camps and also the danger of the heat and storm in those regions. A good pal had the camp experience and those folks trying to cope with the hurricanes dangers broke our hearts. I'm a Shrevesport boy originally and so I understand relentless heat.
Mother nature will take you out every chance she has. Having a fist full of khukuri steel always makes me feel better!

At the time I was visiting my mother in law on Taylors Bayou which is near High Island, Winnie, and not far from Galveston. Between Glaveston and Port Arthur I guess. Plenty of swamp there! I live near Austin now. Why you go to mom in laws you may ask? Fishing was great! I could sit on the porch with five lines out and six beers under me:thumbup:

Now FEMA didnt give the south side of a rat whether you had pets or not. They would pay for a place for you to stay temporary until you got shelter or whatever taken care of but it was the hotels renters, etc that would not allow pets. Fema would allow you to boad your pets and pay for it but no way in hades was I going to leave my dogs. They already went through enough. There was nothing available anyway because all the firefighters, FEMA, government, insurance companies, etc had the hotels filled up for the next six months. I stayed in a climate control storage unit for about a week with my dogs at first then when we were allowed back on the property a week later.
I camped with my wife and dogs for several months. No water, electricity, etc. We would go to the dog park in town to take a bath with the dogs:D I would have given my left nad for a good Khukuri then! Trying to survive after a fire is much like lading on the moon and you spaceship blowing to smithereens! Aint nothing there.

Very handsome animal, if I may add better late than never. My parents have gone with rescue animals a couple of times, I admire anyone who chooses to help these poor fellows. It's quite a commitment.

two week update:

poppy is settling in fine. stitches came out last thursday. she's been doing zoomies and the happy dance in the garden, off-site she's meeting new dogs & people. she's a bit wary of some dogs, some people. seems to like men quicker than women. she likes my neighbour's little white fluffy & wants to play with her, but i think she's too big for that, might accidentally hurt her. some dogs we've met she liked immediately (a black greyhound, couple of shitzus, a lab) was a pit skittish with a minpin. if they bark at her she gets a bit skittishy, but if they ignore her, she barks at them. seems size independent, i'd like to know how she decides.

she started playing with her toys this week, killed a stuffy goose (it's in the surgery awaiting resurrection & re-stuffing), loves her squeaky tennis ball (& a flat squeaky goose (no stuffing)) & will play with it on her own, or fetch it when i throw it (indoors so far, weather has been mostly rotten).

she's eating well, stays quiet if i go to the market for an hour or so, she's there wagging her tail when i return. will let out a bark if she hears a strange noise, but ignores the postman or visitors to the neighbours.

... and has decided my recliner by the TV is her favourite sleeping spot. she tries to finesse me out of it so she can take it over, i so far have resisted her attempts. she is in it at the moment as i'm in the computer chair. :)otherwise she lies down on the futon or the memory foam dog bed in the living room, or retires to my bed if she wants some peace & quiet. we usually share a cuddle on the bed for an hour or so at bedtime before one of us needs more wiggle room. sat. argos is delivering a proper couch to replace the futon which is a bit elderly & worse for wear. i'm sure she'll like it.

she likes looking out the living room bay window from the recliner & keeps track of the birds and other creatures using 'her' garden. made a quiet woof when the neighbour down the hall's lhasa was being walked there & stood on the coffee table in the bay window to get a better view till they came in. so far only one cat has deigned to appear while we were in the garden. it was pefore she had her stitches out, so she was on the lead, but she stopped, fixated on a point about 100 ft. away, it took me a minute to find what she was looking at - a stripy cat behind a bush near the lower gate. poppy took a few step that way to the end of her leash & the cat decided it had business elsewhere & has not come back since. poppy still looks for it tho.

we have a weeping willow that two rather dumb pigeons nest in every spring for the last couple of years or so, the cat climbs up the tree and eats the fledglings every spring. they try again & the cat gets those too. the cat comes in to check periodically. poppy raised her leg and butt & peed on the tree as high as she could manage to let the cat know the new management is in place & she's not having it.

anyway, so far everybody loves her. especially me. she lets me know she considers me to be her alpha human too.

ah, she's left the living room and is on 'our' bed. i think she likes the electric under-blanket & the memory foam topper.

i think i'll go scritch her ears & read my book to her for a while.

Kronc????!!!!???? WAY TO GO, SIR !!!! WELL-DONE, INDEED !!!!

I am so happy for you! Who told you you should get a lurcher? Brilliant man, he was, I betcha!!!! And Poppy is just gorgeous!. I'm gushing here...grinning from ear-to-ear.

She's showing a lot more saluki than collie, and her disposition seems like it was sculpted for you.

What a treat findin this thread was for me.

Thank you and my very best wishes.

More pictures, some running (the dog, not you), and maybe her first rabbit--should that ever, you know, accidentally happen.

:) :) :)

i found a site that listed dogs looking for adoption. it let you search by breed. they included greyhounds and greyhound crosses (which are lurchers) and the other sight-hound breeds, like afghan, borzoi, saluki, visla, etc and their crosses (which are also lurchers) i looked thru all of those. Poppy stood out a mile when i saw her & i KNEW. so did she when i met her. i'm not sure about the collie bit, they were guessing. she's still growing & is in the saluki breed standard size range. looks more saluki to me too. when i was walking poppy at her fosters we came across a saluki/wolfhound cross - THAT was an interesting dog - huge - and with the rough coat of a wolfhound with the ear/leg/tail feathering of a saluki. (as a cross between 2 sighthound breeds, he was technically a 'long dog' but they tend to call them lurchers too.)

i'll take some pics of her running as soon as the weather lightens up it's been stormy & rainy her for a few weeks now - major floods in some areas (luckily i'm 143 ft. above the severn river level a mile or so away). she runs FAST! it's gonna be fun spinning around fast enough to lead her for a photo.

I'm happy to hear you are both having fun. Poor duck! Hope he pulls through with some new stuffing.

Weather has been rainy and 25 with sleet this weekend and so the chihauhuas have insisted on sniffing the entire block here at my MIL's. hope yours clears up soon so you guys can run a bit.

:)

Bri in Chi, RIP, adopted a white german shepard from the New Orleans debacle. Great dog, very nic man and HI collector.
