My reference to 440V and hype was purely hypothetical. I pulled both ATS-34 and 440V out of a hat, so to speak. I probably should have refered to Carbon V instead. I didn't mean in any way to implicate Spyderco. Sorry if it came out that way. Spyderco's marketing seems very matter of fact and down to earth. Not hyped at all.

My main point (after all the specific steels are out of the way, and after the definition of quantum leap is worked through) is that knife-marketing hype does indeed exist and that it is without warrant.

Whether it took two minutes or two millennia, the discovery of the tempering process (for example) was a bigger deal than the difference between two good, modern cutlery steels. That's all I was stumbling around trying to say.
