Dont cut this or that

That's why I like to carry packets of lens cleaner with me. Besides getting my glasses clean, does wonders in cleaning up a blade after wiping the blade on my pants

So does purell wipes. Works awesome for organic crap.

Corners....

I just have to say that while it may not be a big deal for everyone, I personally don't like to gunk my edge up to the point that it doesn't cut well so to me stinky sticky gunk that's difficult to get off sucks . I normally try to avoid anything that will do that, but this thread gave me a great idea. I actually have a box of alcohol wipes around somewhere and will start carrying a few once I find them.

Sandpaper is best cut from the backside. Just fold it and cut up through the crease. Shark and sturgeon skin similar. Very abrasive but weak backside.

Honest tip? Skin oils will do a pretty decent job of de-gunking an edge. Not for the ridiculously dirty, but tape residue and the like. I'll often just rub a thumb on the side of my nose and use that to clean off tue residue. Taking care not to cut myself, of course. ;)

I watched a video of someone talking about sharpening your knife in the field when you have limited resources available. In one part of the video, the person suggested using the edge of your car window (exposed when you roll it down) to sharpen your blade. I am guessing that the tempered glass is harder than the steel?

There were some tactical pens that also had a tempered bead for breaking windows. Must be strong stuff.

This is off topic but the way those work is, glass is hard but brittle to an extent. Enough pressure in one point will shatter it. Those pointy heads only last one or two smashings for most part.

hehe yep, besides corners, which is never a good idea, I would put Stingray skin up there too, those bumps on there are quite hard and can chip a blade out easily, one trick a knife maker told me was to use some spray adhesive on the Stingray skin, glue it down to some fiberboard or something solid but thin and cut it with a band saw.

and that cutting sand paper, from the back and I use my awl on my SAK to score the paper and then fold it in half to easily tear it.

It's kind of hard to glue the skin when it's still on the stingray haha.

the trick is to be firm with them, make them understand, it's saving your knife's edge ;)

Thick plastic packages that are heat fused together

Ha, ha
The other day at work I had one of those and whipped out my latest EDC the thin ground Ti Lite . . . four inch blade . . . the knife just whined and walked back and forth and took a few stabs at it and said “WHAT DO YOU EXPECT ME TO DO WITH THIS ? “.

The little Spyderco Cricket that I bought just for this type of mission stepped up and said “Move over big boy and let me show you how it’s done”.

It cut precisely where I needed to cut to open up the package enough to get the product out and not so much I couldn’t get it back in and store the product if for some reason it didn’t get sold.

PERFECTION SAL PERFECTION SIR !

I could have gotten Western with the Ti Lite and cut through both sides of the package in a somewhat uncontrolled manner and possibly into the contents but luckily a cooler head and better hardware prevailed.

PS: no knives were injured in the making of this scene.

ibeams. You just need the proper knife.

YUP ! I haven't gone there yet . . . unless you include my Oxy/Acet torch. The "cutting torch" ; cuts through thick steel like a hot knife through butter. But that rig rides kind of heavy in the pocket and I can't find a deep carry clip for it.

What ever knife I wind up with for slicing ibeams I suspect compressed oxygen will be involved . . . sweet that means I will need a built in fero rod and the back will have to be aggressive enough to spark with. Perhaps the new methane recovery energy source technology. Any pig farmers out there who can suggest a vendor ?

Roof shingles
Carpet
Fiberglass anything
Scraping the inside of a glass pipe (Some of you know what I mean)
Scraping anything off anything metal
Sticking your knife in a camp fire
Using it as a chisel

I cut whatever I need to.

That's why I have a knife in my pocket.....

I'm with you on this.

Some say don't use a knife on a bamboo cutting board, but I do as one of my cheese boards is bamboo.

Some say don't use a knife on a china plate but I do. I love how a sharp knife slices meat.

If I had to do something and all I have is a knife available, I'll either use the knife as a way to get the tool I need or, more likely since I'm lazy, I'll use the knife directly to do what I need to do whether appropriate.
