Don't fall for eBay price scam

Why is the price so often changed to sold or removed on BF? I am new to BF, about a year, and have been buying a lot of knives for about a year and a half now. Trying to figure out fair prices is hard, harder still when they are removed so fast. Ebay leaves the price in the the sold section for a long time, not withstanding the previously mentioned problems with ebay prices they are there to see. What do you more experienced members think about the constant removal of prices here on the Forum?

Hi Rick,

I can remember seeing a couple of other thread's in the GBU, on this very subject:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ld-threads?highlight=GBU+removing+sales+price

For the first year+ on BF, I always edited my sales to read: $OLD, because that's what I learned reading other member's sales thread's (monkey see-monkey do). I totally agree with you; it's nice to be able to use a past sales thread, as a reference/BF market value.

I just noticed, Super Moderator, Karda's post in the BF thread I pasted above:

There is a vast amount of reading material on this subject

I never remove the price on my sold items. However, I don't amend the asking price if I sold it for less.

I like being able to 'price compare' via sold items.

I don't buy in the high rent LE area above $800. When you're buying selling from $1000-$10,000 and up you might be inclined to hide the selling price.

As for eBay...the only problem there is the final price may NOT reflect true value. I had a couple bidders get in bidding war over something I listed and one ended up paying about twice its value. But I've also lost big time on eBay by not setting a reserve and losing $$$ to a low winning bid.

I don't like the removal of the price. I don't see the benefit, besides not giving people a history of a knifes price.

It was a couple months ago, there was a custom for sale around $1475 (fantastic price) at that time I wasn't into the maker that much so I passed. Well, I decided I really wanted one after a couple weeks. The same exact custom went up for sale, but this time for $2400 lol. I contacted the seller and mad an offer of $1600 and he told me he paid $2500 and was taking a loss.... He also said market is stupid hot but I'll take a loss to help you out. I went to look for the original ad to call him out but it was changed to $SOLD... I passed again just out of principle.

It's always frustrated me that folks remove the price on sold items since it gives me an idea what it's worth.
Occasionally I'll look around here to gauge what a know on ebay or at a swap meet is worth.

Well, if there's one thing for sure, removing prices/ads allows flippers to cover their tracks slightly.

I do not like the removal of prices after an item has sold. This practice makes it virtually impossible for a non-expert on a particular brand/line/model to figure out if something is priced right, over-priced or flat out gouge-city.

Some people say they delete 'change to $old" to protect the buyer. This is total unadulterated BS. If I, as the buyer end up paying too much, well that's too bad. It's out there for the world to see. Claiming that the practice is to protect someone from their "bad decisions/choices", or whatever other bogus reason they list? Puhhleeaassee. Give me a break.

The only reason I see to mask a price after a sale is TO HIDE HOW MUCH THE SELLER GOT FOR THE SALE. Period

LEAVE THE PRICES UP - to not do so just means you, the seller are embarrassed about what you charged someone.

I would urge anyone interested in owning a 0392 to not purchase them this weekend when the listings start to flood in at the $600-700 range. Wait a week or two and they should be selling at or around MSRP. There is absolutely no reason to impulse buy now and if you do it encourages price gouging both present and future.

This is a great thread and I am glad that there is a good conversation about a real topic going on....

I, as well get frustrated by what I saw happen with the 0392 on this forum.
As far as ebay goes, I don't even visit that place. It's become a dead end for anything knife related for me.

At the end of the day, there is still a great core group of people on this forum that are into this hobby for the same reason's I am. I enjoy reading their posts, talking to them outside of the forum, and buying, selling, and trading knives with them.

The point is, as much as I wish this forum worked a certain way, and was a big happy and fair community, that's just not going to happen. This forum is a direct reflection of everything we see in other facets of our lives, and will contain every type of individual, good and bad.

There will always be 'flippers, fraudsters, and scammers' operating on here.

The trick is to recognize the people you identify with and respect. The people that are here to build community, that have good strong morals, and appreciate the value of knowing what's fair, what's right, etc....

I believe there is a strong group of excellent people on this forum, and that group is always growing.
The rest of it, I do my best to ignore.

It just feels so much better to buy/sell/trade knives with people that I respect.

I am anything but a flipper, and I always change my price to $old.

Like John said, it's because that's what I see in almost every sales thread.

I kinda just followed along on that one, but I will leave prices up from now on.....

A really nice knife brother just sold a ZT 0392 for $375 catch and release because he didn't like it. Now that is the spirit. The bros are still out there.

Thanks very much.

Pet peeves are hiding the asking price and making the buyer pay extra for goods and services.

The reason they hide the price is so if the buyer wants to flip it, no one knows what they paid for it. I get a smoking deal on a knife because someone is hard up for cash, and decide I'll sell it for profit.

I won't lie, I've made some money on knife transactions, but I've lost it too. I've got a couple knives I'm going to sell, and I'll sell them for less than I paid for them. But, I use my knives.

I agree. Post the TYD price and be done with it. And unless you know the buyer/seller NEVER do gift. One other pet peeve: email for pictures.

the 0392 that sold on ebay was my auction I listed it for a friend, and it did sell for 1500.00 there was no funny business, no fraud , no scam, no relisting of it. The knife was purchased from ZT a week earlier than it went on sale due to the first ZT sale that went horribly bad. I listed the knife with a stupidly huge buy it now. Someone hit the buy it now and paid me.

What was your opening bid price?
Did you set a reserve?

I see some really high "buy it now prices" and once in a while people pull the trigger on them. However, they seldom reflect real value.

But if you want something bad enough....
