Don't like the new smiley

The cantina has historically been a place free from the attitudes that plague the rest of the forums and the internet as a whole. It is why many of us hang out here. Some of us will venture out into other areas and can be just as full of those attitudes in other places as the people who frequent them are. Bill Martino ran a different forum which many found refreshing and made it home. I'd hate to see it become like everywhere else. That is the point some people don't get.

I'd rather see it only available for use in W&C and Pirate's Cove myself.

I've seen a lot of things on this forum that are hands down more NSFW than the smiley.
Whine and Cheese, Pirate's Cove... Busse Forum anyone?
The first two are both restricted forums, but the Busse forum isn't that bad.

I don't like it. Haven't used it, and won't. I actually wish it wasn't in the choices over there. I, like a few posters, have a fowl mouth. But it has a place, and I haven't seen any vulgarity here. I thought it was low class when I saw it. It doesn't offend me, and I think every 12 year old sees worse than that in school, but its low rent.

I thought it was pretty funny but then again i'm 15, what do i know, right? I don't think anyone respectbale members will use it in an argument. I think it'll probalbly be used in jokes and light hearted conversations.

Agreed.
I'm not offended by it -- I'm just saddened by it. This is one of the forums I go to when I'm sick of all the flame wars at all the other forums I hang out at. They didn't need the icon here, it's just a LCD* joke that, when used in internet correspondence, is guaranteed to annoy and decrease the level of good will in a thread.
Not the sort of thing one would hope for at Christmas time, at any rate.

*Lowest common denominator

Here's another thread where I missed the whole thing. I've no interest in smilies. I should have realized if Sarge was bothering to talk about one there was a good reason, and not chit chat.

This thread has already self corrected- case in point for HI forum, where the internet is much more than just an extention of CB radio.

I'm not offended by it, but I think that in a discussion it's a coward's way out of rationally contesting a point with which you disagree.*

Regardless, I think it's unnecessary.

*Note that this wasn't how Hollowdweller used it. He used it in it's more... ummm... literal sense.

First time I've seen someone with a girlie pic as their avatar here too. I lead a sheltered BladeForums life I guess.

Spark's viewpoint is in this thread in the Service and Support Forum.

Spark's prerogative, it's his forum. If y'all stop hearing from me, you'll know I exercised my prerogative. In my own humble opinion, a man is known by the company he keeps ~and~ the things he'll tolerate.

Happy holidays to all,
Sarge

I like it. I think like all good profane expressions if used with restraint and cleverness it can be a real aid to communication.

Heh...I actually kinda like it. That being said, I can't imagine myself ever wanting to use it in this corner of the forums. (Except for yesterday when I first found it:o ) In W&C definitely....in a few of the other forums maybe...on VERY rare ocassion...but here? I just can't imagine the need for it. Not all of us can agree with all things here, but when folks do disagree, it's usually handled like respectful adults.

Bottom line is if we don't like it, we aint gotta use it. Course on the other hand now that I think about it I am kinda tired of seeing that little green dude jerkin' it in the corner of my monitor for the last five minutes....

I've briefly ventured into Pirate's Cove twice, I think.

I was a bit saddened, and I was disheartened to find the smiley.

No prude I, but everything in its place- and I think the level of discourse here should be above that, unless you have a hot dog/SPECOPS fixation.

:(

I was pretty embarassed I used it yesterday- I was editing something, and saw it. Thought it was something in the code they didn't mean to put in with the rest.

Like the F-word, it's really not a novelty. I was pretty surprised to see it here, though. It is a provocative insult gesture, and will naturally be followed with some hostility.

I'd rather disagree with words than a pic from a high school bathroom.

But I think using it says something about the user, not the system.

Life is full of choices. You can choose not to use it.

Rather have the smiliey shooting a 7.62 minigun- that, I could use.

Ad Astra   :( :foot: :barf: :jerkit:  :thumbdn:

Wow, I didn't even know it existed until just now. And I use the darn things all the time.

There are plenty of images that are inappropriate for this forum, and we are free to exercise our good judgement and choose not to use them any time we want. Adding a new smiley doesn't change this.
