Don't like the new smiley

Raghorn's right. It has always been that way. Our respect for one another shows us how to talk to one another. In other places they do not have nor want the respect.

Sarge, stick around here.

Oh, one more thing- I'm pretty naive. I saw the face and thought he was just scratching his jaw- like the other poster said.

The cantina has historically been a place free from the attitudes that plague the rest of the forums and the internet as a whole.

You think so?

I mean I love everybody here, and like I have said many, many times before everybody here I have met in person is even nicer in real life than the nice people they are here, but I'd have to say I have seen more moral grandstanding, more people arguing over little stuff and more people stomp off over stupid stuff than on other less serious more profane forums.

Me, I like it all. Even the stuff that pisses me off. What fun is it to set around and pat ourselves on the back all the time? Variety is the spice of life!

Sarge,

I certainly wont' tell you what to do. I can't say I like th' green guy, but I can see his utility. However let me tell you a brief story. Once a guy got upset by what he took to be one sided censorship on a forum. He got pissed and left. No one noticed; that isn't true. One noticed and finally talked the quitter into realizing that while in his mind he had left for good reasons, either way it made no change in the world. Frankly I think he ignores his aggravator. From what I was told he said that if he met him on the street he'd pee on his leg. Probably not a terribly Christian thing to do, but whatever Goats his Float.

I guess the question is; does your solution solve a problem, resolve a situation, give more overall benefit that it would cost, not only you but the rest of us as well. It's something I think of now when these things come up.

Guys, no need for a fuss, I've not gone anywhere. But, I make no apology for being aggravated. Seems everywhere we turn nowadays we're being asked to lower our standards. And, if one should be so bold as to offer protest, the "herd mentality" stands there slack jawed and vacant eyed, going "what's your problem?". You see it in our schools, you see it in society, didn't expect to encounter it here so I'm understandably dissapointed.

Yes Munk, I'll stick around, but when my membership runs out I wont renew it if things keep heading where they're going. I can tolerate it, but I don't have to endorse or support it. Fair enough?

Sarge

I'm tired of standards being lowered everywhere because of alleged 'coercion" from the 'majority', and everyone standing there slackjawed and surprised when you notice and object.
Yes.

Sarge, the important thing is to stick to the Cantina if you can believe in that. The Cantina may not always be here at this place. It is always possible life can change the address. Don't anyone get shocked- I'm not saying there's any move or rumor of moves, just that life is always shifting, and that it is the Cantina we try to keep at a constant of good friendship.

Red Flower just asked me what all the fuss was about in this thread.

She was asking what you guys have against the green smiley who is brushing his teeth.

What's up, anyway? You guys have something against oral hygiene?

;)

That's it. And the Freudians believe that dreams about your teeth are related to a fear of loss of sex drive.

Mine ran out during the pruning episode...but I agree with you about the vulgar non-smiley.

Besides...by the time I'd use that one, I would instead show up at the guys door to explain things in person...that's my nature.

Hey so if you:jerkit: Then you'll end up  (sorry, couldn't resist;) )

LOL

ROTFLMAO

I have mixed emotions here. Don't really find this Smily all that offensive. Looks like the guy is scratching his face. Better than a one finger salute!

I like Spark's response..."If you don't like it, don't use it." Makes sense to me.

Personally, I always disliked the :foot: smiley. So I never use it (except in this post). Reminds me of something obscene out of a porno movie.

I guess we just disagree about that. There has been some attitude and ugliness and stupid crap here yes. But it is overall a unique place on the internet in my experience. Granted I don't get around much, but I think the Cantina has a different feel than anywhere else I've been in that it you can be serious without being mocked. Try to be serious in many places and they just throw one of these at you.:jerkit:

It is not that I find it morally offensive as much as I find it a hinderance to real communication.

That I can think of I've never used it to diss someone else. Either used it in it's literal sense or to describe myself wasting time;)

I agree. I used to go onto a forum that dealt with other longer sharp pointy things and things got very nasty on a regular basis. And you were ridiculed for anything that people didn't agree with.

This place is unique, and worth protecting. Maybe conversations like this just serve to make us aware that we need to be vigilant--even if we don't get the smiley removed, at least we (that don't like it) made it clear that we don't approve of it, and most importantly people were sincere and honest about why they didn't like it, and respectful when expressing themselves.

It's interesting that we've gotten three pages of comments on this and no jokes about everyone using it. I'm not that fond of it, but it doesn't bother me that much. They could have done better if they were trying to be obscenely funny. Maybe a boob flashing smiley?

I like the old khukuri wielding smiley, what ever happened to that one?

That's what I was going to say. I do agree with Sarge absolutely in principle, but forget the icon for a minute. We could all talk like they do on some of the other forums and call each other obscene names every few minutes (say! now that's an idea... :D ), but we don't, at least for the most part (although sometimes the passive / aggressive hostility can be even worse!)

So why should we care if there are a thousand inappropriate icons to choose from? We just won't use them and by doing so will keep the forum standards where we want them.

That works for me.

I do not like the new smiley at all, but perhaps for a different reason...I see it as symptomatic of the trend where individuals try to raise their own worth (prestige?) by belittleing the words or actions of others around them. This allows them the fantasy of somehow being better than their fellow travelers. Many of you, for example, might disagree with my personal (and lifelong) stand against illegal drug use, but I for one would rather grin and accept a recent reference to marijuana brownies, than attempt to push my personal agenda on one of my friends here in the Cantina. The new smiley smacks one in the face, and suggests that your views are worthless compared to the one utilizing said emoticon. I vote for its removal

Come on, baby, buy daddy a new pair of shoes!
