I hate to do it to y'all but I just ordered a technical bushcraft sheath from Martin Swinkels for one of my Izulas. The problem is it's an 8-10 week wait so I'm starting this thread to let others share in the anticipation and will update when appropriate. If you're not familiar with Martin's work, click here: http://martinsheaths.blogspot.com/2009/01/technical-bushcraft-sheath.html
This will be the first of this type for the Izula so he's pretty stoked and so am I.

The cost is way more than the Izula's but I feel it's a worthy knife and one I'll pass on to my son some day. Those of you with more money than sense who love your Izulas may want to keep an eye on this one. :D

Damn you, this is like saying hey don't look at this. Just checked him out, I will definitely be anxious to see the end result.

Matin makes some GREAT sheaths! I've been through his site and seen other sheaths posted online that he's done for other people. I know what the wait is like, just like a kid waiting for Christmas!

I'm eager to see this new sheath as well. I've been an admirer of Martins work for some time.

I have one from him for the RC-6. Beautiful leather/kydex hybrid sheath. Will be interesting to see one of these for the Izula, I just have a regular kydex one.

8-10 weeks is a long wait. I feel like a kid pining for Christmas just waiting the few days for my first RATS to get here. Nothing in these forums is helping in any way shape or form - there are too many pictures of awesome knives and people having fun with them.

You should order yourself a new knife to be delivered at the half way point to tide you over. :D

Any advantage to combining leather and kydex on a sheath?

There are some advantages:

a kydex liner protects the leather from being cut, especially the sheath opening.
It stiffens the sheath.
It provides a positive retention for the knife that will last.
It protects the sheath inside, adding water resistence and durability
It protects the kydex from extreme temperatures
a laminate is strong, so the sheath could be made thinner and lighter while still adding strength and durability over an all leather sheath.
It dampens the sound kydex makes. Not only when drawing the knife, but also when bumping into stuff.
Leather makes kydex look pretty :)

to name a few..

Disadvantages over an all leather sheath:
It may cause marks on the blade.
It's less silent when drawn fast.

I've been eye balling the technical sheaths for a while now, they are absolutely the best looking/useful style sheath for big blades, haven't seen many small blades yet, but an Izula? ohhhhh thats a sweet thought.

I see you found my anticipation thread Mr. Swinkels. :D I think the appearance and feel of leather were the two main reasons I became interested although your other points are all valid. Especially about the strength of a laminate. That's partially why I requested .060" kydex.

I'll definitely do a review with pictures once it arrives.

Well, it looks like Mr. Swinkels is done! He sent these two pictures to me so now I can't wait for the Postman to come. I'll certainly post again after I've had a chance to use it.

In Martin's words, "It has all the features of the technical sheath. Drainage hole, removable kydex liner, tek lok compatibility, removable droploop."
