Well, I've had the sheath for a week or so and have had enough time to give my thoughts on it. I was able to snap two pictures before the camera battery died as well.
First off, Martin's work is first class, I love the nice touches like the "IZULA" stamped into one of the straps and Martin writing the year 2010 inside another. This is a rugged feeling and looking sheath with some tooling marks in places that just give it wonderful character. Nothing fancy anywhere, it's all business.
While it's not really a huge factor as far as function goes, the leather gives a softer, warmer feel to the sheath that kydex alone could never duplicate. The sheath is also a bit quieter as well when drawing or reinserting the knife. Again, not that significant but noticeable and nice.
It does weigh about 1 ounce more than plain kydex so I thought it would be questionable as a neck sheath. I've been wearing it almost exclusively as a necker and it is still light enough to be comfortable once I got used to it. I did use it some as a pocket sheath and it's very nice in that role for sure. The only problem was I kept wanting to put my hand in my pocket, or pull it out to look at it. I may try it out horizontally on my belt before deciding if it will be an everday carry piece one way or another, or if I'll save it with my backup Izula to pass on to my son someday.
I don't see myself using it with the drop loop although I did try it on just to check it out and the set up is perfect as expected. I just love all the options this sheath presents and see it as a heirloom piece so whoever gets it will hopefully find a carry method they like.
Overall, it's evident when you see and handle this sheath that it was made by a true craftsman. Built to function and last.
Thanks for crafting this for me Martin.
I forgot to mention, Martin threw in a leather IWB loop so I may try carrying IWB for a week to see how I like that as well.
