The Doomsday Preppers show is on tonight (Tue Feb 7) on National Geographic TV (people preparing for doomsday survival). Maybe silly but I'm going to checkout the first episode.

I'm just afraid they'll be depicted as "crazy people". I'll be watching.

Houston eh? League City here.

Yeah. You know they probably found the most "out there" bunch they could find to put on the show. I'll be watching to see how it goes.

I only need one thing for doomsday-a great big bottle of barbiturates! Don't intend to live in a world like that, or a Communist police state like we're becoming.

Rich

I'm going to tune in for this one but i think that it will probably depict a buch of paranoid, ignorant, doomers rather than folks who are trying to be self sufficient.

Big Army guy in the first part I serviced with in Iraq

Wow. I had to laugh at the chick. Especially when it showed her workout routine.

At least they are showing a variety of folks, AO's, and their bug in and bug out plans.

Worst show ever. I don't think I would be advertising to the whole damn country my plans for survival. It's an invitation for some unexpected guests coming to take your stuff.

I found it hilarious that the girl from the city worked out 4 hours a day in preparation if her bug out, but when she was told her food and water rations wouldn't last long enough, she replied "that's all we can afford".

Well sweetheart maybe get a second job for 3 of the 4 hours your wasting on doomsday prep fitness, then use that money to buy ramen noodles and water. Problem solved

The "survivalist" types on there were depicted as being kind of wacko's which I figured they would be (and they probably are somewhat lol) But I enjoyed seeing Christopher Nyerges on there. I have taken several classes of his and he is super knowledgable and a helluva nice guy too.

Sadly, i can't watch it here in Bosnia - sure wish i could though. If it's as the previous Posters have described, it sure makes the rest of us "normal" prepared-ness minded folks look like 'gooners'.

Honestly, a lot of Folks in the States pretty much perceive these "Doomsday Preppers" as fringe/marginalized people - the radical crazy's. OK, i know some of us would reply to this like, "Meh - who cares what anyone thinks", or "OH YEAH BABY - that's totally me and i'm proud of it!!!!" or "My hero is that dude in the movie 'Tremors' - he was awesome!!!!". OK, that's cool.

Unfortunately, popular public opinion affects law-makers who in turn make laws, pass 'initiatives' and other irrational regulations that can be restrictive and pose challenges to our US Constitutionally-Backed Bill of Rights.

The question becomes, "How, as responsible, productive citizens can we positively portray prepared-ness and reverse the negative opinion held by the masses?". Kinda like helping "Sheeple" understand that knives aren't only for criminals...

I watched the 1 hour show they did several months ago that was just a one time thing and the families on there were pretty normal, some even had a few good ideas and set ups but now it seems like they just found a bunch of crazy people with some real out there worries like and EMP:rolleyes: to make the series intriguing. And like someone else said it don't make sense to show the entire country all the stuff you have stockpiled cuz it won't matter how many guns you have if your whole community decides to come and take it from you. I will say though that I was watching some vids on YouTube a while back and I do like the shipping container homes. That's a cool ass idea in my book. But the guy and his wife on the show fired 2 rounds from a .22 at it to see if it would puncture the containers(of course not) but he said they chose that caliber cuz its the most common and what they would be likely to come up against. I would think 9mm is a lot more common, but I also live in the inner city where every young punk has one, lol. Plus wouldn't you want to test it against the larger caliber weapons that might be used against it so that you know how well to reinforce it for the worst case scenario?? I also loved the segment with the fat guy who was told that his weakness was his bad health since he has kneed and a back that need surgery but when they did the update on him he said his health was the same if not worse and it wouldn't change since he couldn't afford an operation...maybe he could use the thousands of dollars he's spending on guns, radios and other supplies to fix his body.:rolleyes:
I'll keep watching since I'm sure there will be a lot of amusement but also because one out of every few has some good ideas or plans on preparing. Forgive the rambling..:)

The girl from Texas planned on bugging out to Mexico! I'm glad she changed her mind because that was pure lunacy. I also had a hard time believing that the family in Arizona with the pool biosphere who were practicing for radiation and or chemical attack could possibly think they could keep their outdoor food supply free from contamination... For that matter none of them seemed to have given that much consideration except the big guy worried about an EMP pulse.

With the exception of Chris Nyerges, who I hold in high esteem for his skills and proven abilities to survive in the wild (not just in L.A., as the program would have you believe), I would classify most of the people on that show as "targets." I know I sound harsh, but their "compounds" would be, literally, indefensible against an organized attack, and their caches of food, etc. would go to whomever overran them.

Chris probably made the best statement of all when he gave his riposte, stating that he was building a "community" of like-minded folks for a survival scenario. It will take that to survive a catastrophic occurrence, no matter what type it may be. The "loner" concept works only in the movies.

Just my opinion, yours may differ completely!

Regards,
Ron

Chris was in that? I watched it. I thought it was well done and believe them to be well prepared. They seemed better than normal. They seemed like cool people that would be interesting to hang out with. Though I am surprised I didn't see a bomb shelter. I mean, that threat is still very real. But then it was only the first show. I'm a little surprised of this threads criticism of the show before anyone has seen it. The people on that show portray a farm more positive image of Americans then others would garner from this forum. I'm not sure which one impressed me the most. The advice given to each of them after their preparations were shown seemed beneficial and wasn't just cynicism posing as constructive criticism. But as to the likelihood of their doomsday prediction, they gave practically nothing. One family was expecting a world wide financial collapse. The shows experts said of the likelihood "economist today don't think that's likely". Wow....way to probe deep!

my 2 cents, I watched the one time preppers show that was mentioned in the thread earlier, plus the two "doomsday preppers" episodes just aired. I am with drive by trucker on many views.

first off folks bashing the show before it aired was surprising to me ...at least see the show before you criticize it. I am also very surprised more people on the thread aren't supportive of a "being Prepared for any disaster" type show.

secondly I think it was well done in that they used different people with different plans, and preparing for different world altering events. granted all the characters aren't realistic or very likeable...I am mainly speaking of the woman from TX who not only had a foolish plan, but had one of those annoying personalities that you could only take in limited doses. That being said there were some folks on there i would love to have a coffee and talk with and learn some of their prepper skills.

I watched survival shows, like man vs wild and survivorman with the mind set "If i learn one useful thing each episode it is worth my time" plus there is a amusement factor as well....I will be the first to say there are so many holes in those shows as well.

I for one will be watching the whole series...even my GF who didn't even eat red meat before we started dating is excited about the show and is taking the idea of being prepared more seriously now.

i would never take "prepping to the extremes" these folks on the show do. I will tell you that most of us that have good knives, camp, hunt, fish and add some food and water storage...are light years ahead of the average joe if there is a disaster.
