This is another firestarter idea I had along the lines of my other one with the DMT sharpener shown here .http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=627382&highlight=Rinaldi. Anyway I had planned on putting one of these British SAS button compasses in the first one but the DMT had a magnetic sig that screwed with the compass. It is 14MM dia. and THE best small compass you can buy. Of course its a backup to a large full function compass or GPS. I used a titanium pin and thong tube to keep the compass running true and not be disrupted by the magnetism of steel pins.
The misch metal ferro-rods are pressed in with epoxy and pinned to ensure they NEVER come out.. I figured if one of these things can set fire to the rug just think what TWO will do..:cool::D

It will have a specialized S30V multi-tool striker(working on design) and sheath, and it will mount to a knife sheath or tek lock..

What do you guys think? This is the best place I know of to get feedback on these kinds of things..

You liked play with matches as a kid, didn't you?
I think the drill holes in their toothbrush to save weight will see it as too heavy but those who really don't want to risk no fire might be interested.

The whole thing is pretty light.. If they would balk at carrying around another oz. or so I guess you might be right..Ha!

Looks awesome....please feel free to send me one for test purposes !!!!

If you produce those, consider two already sold.

Here's something else you might consider. Offer 3 models. One with 2 misch rods, one with 2 ferro rods and one with both. I love misch rods, but they wear pretty fast and require a sharper edge than ferro. Having both on one striker would take care of all your needs - ferro for when things are great and there's plenty of easy tinder - misch for when there isn't easy tinder or when its wet.

Either way you get a massive:thumbup::thumbup:

Lock, stock and 2 sparking barrels.
They look good indeed. Could you do a video or pic comparison of the difference in spark shower you get between 1 and 2 'barrels'? I reckon that would be good advertising material.

Absolutely brilliant!

I would prefer a single barrel version as an option to save space and weight, but I wouldn't mind the double barrel for the car. Would the rods be replaceable? Probably not, if you're using epoxy.

I like the DMT version, too! Very innovative!

Will you offer these as regular items, or will they be limited runs?

that thing is cool Trace... i wouldn't mind checking one out too...:D great idea...

OT: are you going to try and make it out to the Cali. get-together in May??

That is sweet. I wants.

It will have a specialized S30V multi-tool striker(working on design) and sheath, and it will mount to a knife sheath or tek lock..

But won't S30V break into a million pieces if you strike the rods with it?
(Ducks for cover) :D

Looks awesome Trace. Another idea (FWIW) Tracy Mickley at USA knifemakers has some round 1/2" magnesium rod and you could do 1 ferro and 1 Mag.
The package looks great.
Thanks for showing it to us here.

I think the one of each setup others have mentioned would be even better, but still . Great idea!

I really like it, but would make the compass an option. I have one of those SAS compass' in the butt cap of my CRK Project I and like it, but its expensive. I would rather get the firesteel/sharpener without the compass and save the $40. Of course, if I were going light with just a folder and pocket kit it would make a lot of sense.

Hey, i like the concept, I really like the compass, been looking for a small, non crap compass for a while, where can i get one of those SAS ones?
