DOUBLE Barreled firesteel+nav

This is some good stuff, I like alot of the suggestions guys.
As I get closer to making them I want the ability to offer options like no compass, mixed rods, magnesium etc.. A way to customize them to the users particular needs.
Kage I was also thinking the epoxy might be overkill, and if I didnt epoxy them the rods could be replaced if they were worn out. When I press these things in they are in very tight, with the pin peened and epoxied the rods wouldnt EVER come out in use. But with a hammer and punch the pin could be knocked out to replace the rods. They would then have to be drilled and re-pinned but it would be better than having wore out rods..;)

MtnMike I dont think I can make that.. I may be setting up my new shop in N. Id around that time and I got all kinds of stuff going on right now. I think theres something coming up in a few months down here I might get too.. I forget what its called right now though.

iBlade, Im not sure where I got that one from.. They can be kind of tricky to find.. I know TAD carries them, but I got that one somewhere else. I'm going to have to find out how to get a "few" of them.. They are a good little unit.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions guys, I got my ears open..;)

Small set screws maybe?

That "might" work if I was to tap the rods, but I havent tried that before. You cant tap the G-10 or various materials I plan on making these out of.
I think assembling them with no epoxy on the rods and then epoxy and peen the retainer pin is the easiest solution.. But I'll think on that some.;)

I doubt there will be many guys wearing out 3/8" rods left and right but it would be nice to have the option of replacing things that wear out..

I definitely like the idea of replaceable rods. I've worn out plenty of the LMF Scout rods (I know, they're thinner) when I teach survival classes, Scouts, etc. The SAS compasses are pricey and it would be a shame to have a great little compass that is no longer serviceable because it's attached to some slivers of ferro rod.

I'm glad you're open to making them with different options. I could see getting several of these in different flavors.

Great work!

Whereabout in Idaho? I'm trying to get back there myself.

My thinking exactly, those compasses are kinda spendy and if you were to wear the rods out, being able to replace them would make alot of $ense.

We're moving to N. Id near the south end of lake CdA.

What is the handle material ? Maybe you could counterbore the sides of the handle and epoxy a small nut in place, that way a small grub screw could be tightened up against the rods to secure them. This could then be loosened with a allen key and the worn rods replaced !

How I envy you! I used to live in eastern Idaho but I would love to move into the Sawtooths of central or northern ID. Good luck with your move!

I've seen your knives on the Hoods Woods Vids, but never up close before. The ones you showed on the DMT/ferro rod thread has me drooling!

Nice work Trace. Great choice in a mini compass too. I like it when smaller backups like that are NOT liquid filled.
