Douk-Douk or Mercator k55k?

Hi all,
I was excited to receive my Douk-Douk in the mail, only to see that there's something wrong with the finish on the blade.[/IMG]

The spines are all rough and unfinished, there's nothing wrong with it.

I'd take my Douk Douk over any Opinel and I didn't much care for my Higonokami.

I reckon that's why there are so many brands and styles out there!
We each have our preferences and favorites! I've taken all three to work with me and after days of opening boxes, cutting cardboard , Styrofoam, rope and plastic bands, I'll stick with the Black Cat then go with the Higo before the Douk, mostly because it's a bugger to open and shut in comparison. I will try applying some graphite and see if that helps the situation any.

I just got a Mercator K55K Black Cat, 4- 1/4" closed lock back.
I was thinking of getting a Douk-Douk and found this thread! Neat. I may get a Douk too.

I got the carbon version Cat and I really like it. I'm mostly a slipjoint guy although I love all types of knives and this one
has a great history. Two things stand out- It's flat and it's long. Blade is about 3.5" long and really sharp. The lockup feels real solid.
I forget it's in my back pocket it's so thin. I'm glad I bought it.

The Douk-Douk is such a minimal build (almost less than an Opinel) and yet it delivers so much. It actually ticks (almost) all the boxes... I carry the smallest in my purse, the medium in my pocket and the magnum stays in the kitchen because it slices meat better than any santoku. It embodies the concept of "pocket knife" with such success that you must just love it.
Just for your pleasure, my preciouses...

Small, but behold...

The second knife, in the left pocket. It actually deserves to be the main knife.

The great slicer. A great knife by itself and an incredible cutter...The do-it-all EDC if you wear sturdy trousers with man pockets...

Well the graphite didn't help any, it's still a stiff mother to open and close! Personally I think the romance of it's history has more to do with it's popularity than pure function.
The blade is definitely keen but then so is the Black Cat and easier to handle, for me anyway.:o

Which size Douk Douk do you recommend? I'm torn between the one with the 3" blade and the one slightly larger.

very old thread Sir......

I have both. pocket carry I prefer the smaller one as the larger one falls flat and I dont care for that. that aside I actually like the bigger one better for using, just dont like carrying it in a pocket freely.

I have a Mercator, DD, Opinel and a Higonokami. All are great fun but the Mercator would be preferred in my case for EDC. The DD is really hard to open.

It is amazing how different those two folded sheet metal handles feel in hand. The Mercator is much more comfortable than the Douk-douk.

I like my big Douk, but it's never carried. Might need to EDC it for a while.

Edit: i love how this thread has bounced back time and time again.
