It started today here, also, but I haven't been out yet.

My dad had 2 model 8s: one was 16ga, the other was .35 Remington. John Browning was a genius.
So David are you going to shut down the chicken ranch? Let me know if I can help you post pictures.

No, we have 13 laying hens right now. We purchased these in March and they started laying in July. Among these there are 2 that are not strong layers and these will be culled. I'm waiting on the 110 Titan to use for these and I'll do a write up on how the s90v steel worked. Not that it will be anywhere near dull. But I've used many steels while processing chickens and can quickly tell how a steel will perform. That's the
best I can do with what I've got. Perhaps some other use opportunities will come up, like cleaning doves as the season runs to Oct. 29. Thank you, DM

View attachment 759129 I ordered a 110 Titan also. I will probably knock the blade out of it and turn it into a Selector blade. The original Model 186 was also called the Titan. A good test for a blade (doing chicken work) is to cut down both sides of the spine to remove the backbone and pelvis. Plowing through chicken bones separates man blades from boy blades.
It is probably a good idea to keep the chickens as pigeons do not provide eggs. The Buck Hornet has an S-90-V blade and an open frame, but the blade is recurved (not my favorite).

Yes, your right. Most of the time when I process I'll use the knife and push it through bones. Separating the various cuts is hard on any blade.
Do it in that manner and watch how quickly it dulls. Sometimes I'll be nice and separate the cut at joints, so just cutting through cartilage.
In this manner the edge lasts much longer. I'll not show any mercy to the Titan. Plus, these hens are large, weighing in the 8-9 lb. range.
So, the bones will be large.
On doves not really much to cut. The wings. -- in the manner I do it. I could push it through the legs as well. The way my Southern girl prepares dove we really like it. DM

To stay on point,. No I don't hunt much at all anymore.

To contribute to the thread drift. Have you guys ever de boned a whole chicken so the entire carcass is intact? Then you stuff it and roll and tie it. Bakes like a regular stuffed chicken, then you slice it like a meatloaf.

A skill worth learning. The truth is I find it easier to do it that way, than carving a roasted chicken.

eveled, there is another gent who does chicken in the manner you state. He visits here some.
pj, what kind of dog do you have that will retrieve for you? I recall you having a black lab that is a good retriever. DM

I find the best way to do chicken in on the bbq. my dog is at his best at the same time.

Good shootin & nice pics guys!
I haven't been in a while but My old Benelli SBE 12 Ga points like a 20 ga & never jams.
We used to hunt with a guy who loved the Dove hearts...He'd save everyone & take em home.
We would just grill our Dove breasts with a marinade & wrap in bacon sometimes...MMMmmm!

I miss my Remington 1100 Special Field at this time of year. I miss being able to hunt doves and walk the hedge rows for whatever small game that pops up. It is great to be out there, smelling the smell of late summer and the approaching autumn. I love the smell of burnt shotgun powder and the feel of the gun. I love the feel of the sun on my back and the wind in my face. One day, I will walk those rows again.

Mak, so your dog is at his best near bbq...
jmh, thanks.
zak, many times I save the hearts and gizzards. Then fry them. They are delicious. Maybe you'll get out this year for some exercise. Thanks,DM

Doc, that's great you have a 1100. I hope you can get out soon. If I harvest some more today I'll post it. Thanks, DM

Nice bag of dove David. Thanks for the message - but I didn't go today. It's been pouring for two days so I stayed home and got my Old Drum fishing gear ready for this coming Tuesday (spending the day on the Pamlico Sound with my Dad and brother). My hunt club moved our annual opening day cookout and dove hunt to Monday - I'll be out there with my Auto-5 16GA - looking for some good flying action into the sunflower field. OH

My daughter came and hunted with me and got one. I got 6. I shot my wife's Citori on most of them. I had never shot her gun before.
I was surprised. Yes, John Browning was a genius. It was cloudy and they weren't flying as much. I used the Alaskan Guide 110 to dress them. Still, we had a good time.
Hunter, hope you find some and enjoy the outdoors. DM
