Very Roman sounding sentiment (remembering the Romans' horror of the Goths....and those gates did fall obviously).

Beoram;

I read some of the Upanishads and Vedas when I was 20. You on the other hand, seem well versed in them. It kind of takes my breath away. Who are you?

Resident Magician and Loremaster. - Bill Martino

Well, Bill, you're another one. I haven't read all your bio, sounds to me there are several novels and motion pictures there, but stepping outside your job/role as forum host; who are you!!??

This place is not simply filled with guys looking for honkin' knives and good deals.

Good answer.

There is something here. If this was Buck knives or? Would the people assembled be so diverse, independent, present, possessed?

This is a strange place. I wouldn't have bet a million bucks the denominator of knives would have brought you all together.

And you Bill, as a young man in Nepal, would figure one day you'd be in this business with your friends the Kamis?

Naw. Who could write this script?

I wouldn't say well-versed - it would take many more years for that, I think. Who I am - good question - here's my official homepage though.

It is a unique and most unusual place. It's sort of odd, when one thinks about it, not what one would expect a 'knife forum' to be like. Must be the magic of khukurees...

Well on your way towards becoming a Professor, and obviously a teacher here and other places. My brother was a National Merit Finalist...he ended up in a dark room with the IRS working on computers, though...

Me, I just ended up.

Thanks,

I don't believe I would put too much effort in to trying to figure it all out. Just enjoy the diversion while it lasts. ;)

If I were to believe in reincarnation, I would like to think I was once a Roman soldier.

I was not a young man in Nepal. I was 49 when I first arrived and the oldest Peace Corps Volunteer in our group and in service in Nepal. But that didn't stop me from dating the 23 year old girls both PCVs and locals.

Uncle,

Thanks for posting that picture. I have always suspected that you were Human.

There are social forms in the States that are general guidelines, not for every circumstance. I've always thought Hollywood actors trading in their wives for newer models terrible. In the Peace Corps in another land, the context is different. Anytime you are closer to the land things are realer, values distilled into different arrangement than two cars and a subdivision home.

Thanks for sharing you were 49 in Nepal first go round. What a trip. Had a girlfriend in college who joined the Corps, went to Thailand, became a hospital administrator and married an 'untouchable" . They have a slew of kids now, some from previous, some from each other, all of them theirs. I heard the inlaws in San Diego Ca were scandalized. They remain in Thailand.

Human? I have some ex wives who may argue that point and speaking of such -- I'd been divorced since age 40 so no tradeins available by the time I got to Nepal.

You've had a life most of us only dream of.

Hey, I just got curious...what are the customs in Nepal for meeting eligible women? (I'm happily married, no trade-ins ) Can a man speak to a lady? Are woman escorted about? Is there a 'coming out party?"

munk

Uncle,

You were 49 when you went over to Nepal? Dang, that means I still have hope :) . I just have to find an excuse to go over there. ... can't do the Peace Corps though. I looked into that already a couple of years ago. They tend to frown on my military background.

Munk,

Welcome to the cantina (belated welcome I'm sure). I still think this is the coolest place to hang out on the net!

Alan

Thank you Alan.

The Peace Corps frowns upon military service prior to a job/position? Real? That is outragious.

That is.... beyond understanding.

munk

Since Korea is the forgotten war I guess they forgot my military service but being a supply clerk on a tin can is not a high profile position.

I found meeting gals in Nepal to be pretty easy. Knowing a little of the language helped tremendously. Stores, markets, tea shops, cafes, restaurants, local hangouts were all easy places to strike up a conversation and take it from there. And, I was a curiosity, sort of a mystery man, and since I was American I HAD to be rich all of which helped. Age difference seemed not to matter much. I seemed to be fair game for gals 16 to 60.
