Down, dirty, closeup, personal -- Pix. Tragedy & what you don't see on CNN or BBC.

When you think of Nepal, there is always Everest. Monks, visionaries, poverty, strange beasts pulling plows, bandits, and the most daunting challenge of all:

Hey, I just got curious...what are the customs in Nepal for meeting eligible women? (I'm happily married, no trade-ins ) Can a man speak to a lady? Are woman escorted about? Is there a 'coming out party?"

reply by Bill Martino
I found meeting gals in Nepal to be pretty easy. Knowing a little of the language helped tremendously. Stores, markets, tea shops, cafes, restaurants, local hangouts were all easy places to strike up a conversation and take it from there. And, I was a curiosity, sort of a mystery man, and since I was American I HAD to be rich all of which helped. Age difference seemed not to matter much. I seemed to be fair game for gals 16 to 60.

Doesn't this deserve it's own thread? - '10 best Chat-Up Lines in Nepali'? ;)

To Uncle:

You've had a life most of us only dream of.

How about a thread called "Great Cathouses of the West?"

(not meaning to undermine the gravity this thread was begun with - just a little break from the sadness)

Ha!

From what Bill indicates, it's not neccesary to learn how to, 'chat up". The, "Rich Foreigner's guide Separating Hearts from Sharks" seems better applied. Paticular attention to chapter 11, "How not to have your throat slashed by incensed relatives of your date."

Thank you Alan.

The Peace Corps frowns upon military service prior to a job/position? Real? That is outragious.

That is.... beyond understanding.

Munk,

I'm not sure if *all* prior military service is frowned upon, but ANYthing doing with intelligence is. ... they just won't (cannot) accept anyone into their ranks with that background. I suppose it is understandable though. Just frustrating. ...

Is the Peace Corps a Federal program or private business?

I don't care if you were a CIA assasin. If we want to help people today, nothing in the past should be held against us, least of all military service.

:( :( :( :(

Take away the written language of the page, dress the people in generic clothing and print the picture in black and white and you have a picture of everyone and anyone in anyplace who is human and suffers from the acts of inhumanity.
If humanity could and would act in the same aggressive manner as the inhumane ones do in order to have justice then we could and would.

There are many questions though that we've been over before and will be yet again I'm certain in this world we live in................. Who decides enough is enough and who decides who is inhumane? Will we be able to stop in time to not become those we have judged and in the end, if there ever is an end can we as humans really do what must be done or do we and should we wait upon the God(s)?

Most of you know my stand in that we can do the deed in the way it must be done and come back able to live among and with the gentle ones without them fearing us as we keep that warrior side leashed inside of ourselves with Love as anything less is powerless to us and without that Love we become those who hate us and the war continues on.

Yvsa, it has ever been so. Ultimately it is a judgement call of values. There is no way to fight a clean war. There's always trouble putting the beast back in the box. That is our responsibility as individuals and as a Nation.

That's what we do, Yvsa. We survive, defend ourselves best we can, try not to become the enemy.

Munk,

I agree with you in theory. But I reckon they have to maintain a "strong deniability" status with the countries they work in. ... to keep their workers safe and to get the job done. Any "doubts" as to personnel incountry (i.e. someone with the air of collections about them or their past) could lead to all kinds of problems.

The only frustrating thing for me is the organization I worked in (AFOSI) falls into the category of "intelligence community agency," even though I was just in Protective Services/Anti-terrorism and Narcotics. Oh well. ... I'll just have to come up with another way to meet 23 year old Nepali gals :) .

That's the only thing that makes sense to me. I was running away with the idea there was an implicit liberal bias that wanted nothing to do with the, "military industrial complex" but your explanation is plausible.

I believe we live in a world where a Bail Bondman could decide one day that passing out food in India was more important than betting felons will stand trial. Even murderers have become Priests.

<<. Oh well. ... I'll just have to come up with another way to meet 23 year old Nepali gals>> -Alan

The phrase, '23 year old Nepali girls' is starting to carve a place in my brain. I wouldn't mind strolling through the produce section of the supermart and picking up a bundle of them.

They are still there -- bountiful and beautiful.

CIA operatives infiltrated the Peace Corps early on -- in Nam and other places. This got the PC in trouble as one might expect so the PC folks are very wary and careful now about background check, especially when it comes to intelligence.

Just took another look at the PC site. ... seems you have to have a college degree these days to get in. I'm shy of my degree by a semester, and won't be going back for quite some time/if at all.

Oh well. ...

Bill, I'm a married man, I try to be mature. When you described Nepal 23 year old's yet one more time, did you really have to say: "bountiful and beautiful".

I will never get them out of my mind now.

I like it, 'bountiful and beautiful' - both alliteration and rhyme :)
