So, I have finally made it back!! After what seemed to be an endless month of research, finding and buying the right tools, building jigs, and trying to find the courage to begin, I have FINALLY begun and made progress on my first full custom knife! Since this is my very first one, and I am keeping it for myself, I made my favorite pattern. I modeled it after the beloved Boy's Knife! Enough jibber jabber, lets get to the pics!!
Here, I have my stainless liners and pins, with my profiled blade and spring. I ground out the long pull at this point, and I plan to clean it up after I grind the blade.
The blade is about 2.25" and the closed length will be right around 3.25". Blade and spring are 1095 carbon steel.
Here is a jig I built based off of Ken Erickson's design for his own. This is called a rise fall indicator, and lets me adjust the tang so that the spring will sit flush in all three positions; open, half stop, and closed. This tool is adjustable to all of the patterns that I plan to make.
At this point, since I have already made my liners, I use one to set the indicator to fit the blade and spring:
Here, I have the blade and spring in place and in the open position. I set the indicator to zero to use this as a starting point.
Then I set the blade in the half stop position, then adjust the back of the tang until it is on the zero:
Do the same in the closed position:
Now I can assemble the knife using the two liners. Tension can be applied to the spring, but without moving the blade at all, as that will bend the spring out of shape.
To test the half stop and closed positions, I removed the pivot and replaced it with the blade in that position.
Checking the flush with the spring:
What do you guys think?? Not too shabby, eh?
Thanks for looking!!!
