Dr. Frankenstein, The Saga Continues!!!

This has taken me way longer than it should have but I finally have a picture of my #15 boy's knife, modified my Evan aka Esnyx. Everything is perfectly flush and smooth. He chose some beautiful amboyna burl which is mostly a deep rich reddish brown; the unpictured side has some red swirls and it might look even better, but I like the contrast on this side. I think it goes perfectly with the brass hardware.

Please excuse any dents or dings, it wouldn't be mine if it hadn't felt asphalt once or twice:

Thank you, Evan. This knife is classy!:)

And gorgeous, too! I like the fact that combining the long bolster, making it from brass, and then using the amboyna scale material you have a one of a kind knife. As close to custom as you can get without making the knife completely from scratch.

Great work!

Robert

I posted this in the carry thread, but I wanted to showcase some of Evan's work here. I'm loving this knife and it will be a regular carry.

p.s. the light was playing tricks on my camera :thumbdn:

Awesome thread! I've been thinking about doing a single spring TL-29 conversion with corn cobb...... I have too many projects as it is, but I might add this one.

Hey everyone, thanks for the nice comments! This thread has been a lot of fun for me, and I hope it has been fun and educational for you too.

Unfortunately, I will not be making a tutorial post in here any time soon. As of Monday, I have closed my books for orders on modified knives...

...but don't worry, I will be back in a couple of months with my own custom traditionals! I need to focus on learning and perfecting these, before I can open my books up again.

I've got to say, I wouldn't have made it this far without the support of community. You guys have really given me the nerve to take daring steps wit these knives, and really push myself to my full potential. I truly appreciate it.

YOU GUYS ROCK!!

To be continued...

PS if you guys have any questions about a modification, or how to fix something, feel free to post it here. I will still be browsing the forums, and I will be more than happy to help anyone!

Wow Evan, cant wait to see what you come up with in your own custom line.

Glad I caight you right before you shut it down. Im going to have the coolest GEC 15 yet!

Gonna be a lot of people jealous over that one, Justin. Better keep that thing under lock & key.

Esnyx did these two for me before he "closed the books" on mods. and I've been trying to get some good photos. The first is a Cattauragus 3 1/4 in. jack that had a missing scale and broken blade tip, now with reprofiled blade and hafted in ebony with original shield, it's a beauty of an edc:

The second is a Camillus 3 7/8" stock knife that once had badly shrunken black cel scales that I tried to rebuild, but found it to be beyond my skill level. Now sporting 10,000 year old mammoth ivory. Thanks Evan! :D:D:D

Awesome work bud!

Thanks Barry! Those are some great pics!! I especially like the pic of the Cat next to the Charlow!

These were a lot of fun to work on, nothing quite like reviving an old knife!

So, I have finally made it back!! After what seemed to be an endless month of research, finding and buying the right tools, building jigs, and trying to find the courage to begin, I have FINALLY begun and made progress on my first full custom knife! Since this is my very first one, and I am keeping it for myself, I made my favorite pattern. I modeled it after the beloved Boy's Knife! Enough jibber jabber, lets get to the pics!!

Here, I have my stainless liners and pins, with my profiled blade and spring. I ground out the long pull at this point, and I plan to clean it up after I grind the blade.

The blade is about 2.25" and the closed length will be right around 3.25". Blade and spring are 1095 carbon steel.

Here is a jig I built based off of Ken Erickson's design for his own. This is called a rise fall indicator, and lets me adjust the tang so that the spring will sit flush in all three positions; open, half stop, and closed. This tool is adjustable to all of the patterns that I plan to make.

At this point, since I have already made my liners, I use one to set the indicator to fit the blade and spring:

Here, I have the blade and spring in place and in the open position. I set the indicator to zero to use this as a starting point.

Then I set the blade in the half stop position, then adjust the back of the tang until it is on the zero:

Do the same in the closed position:

Now I can assemble the knife using the two liners. Tension can be applied to the spring, but without moving the blade at all, as that will bend the spring out of shape.

To test the half stop and closed positions, I removed the pivot and replaced it with the blade in that position.

Not too shabby at all, bud! Very interesting look at your work in progress, thanks for showcasing it. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Very interesting! Thank you for sharing your progress with us. :) Just about the perfect closed length in my opinion and with a single blade!

Thanks for the nice comments fellas! I'll keep posting my updates in this thread, I should have some new pics up tonight or tomorrow. Back to grindin'!

This is great. I'm always curious to find out how things are made. I can't wait to see this progress to a completed knife.
