Dragonfly needs to be updated - Need input

i'm not certain about all the differences between my 10-year old G-2 'fly and the newer ones, but it was my first spydie, and one of the best representations, in my opinion, of a knife that can work WAY harder than it should. i can't believe the amount of abuse the thing has put up with. if the newer ones are built similarly, i'm going to have to say that i like to overall size/toughness/ergonomic factor, and i will second the movable clip and higher-end steel thoughts. no opinion on the boye dent-i think the one on my merlin is fine, but i don't know that i'd care about it much either way on my old 'fly (which does not have it).

the double blade idea vassili mentioned intrigues me, but if i buy a dragonfly, to be honest, i'm going to want pretty much the exact same size and shape.

different colors would be cool, too. are they made with the beveled edge spyderhole anymore? i prefer the hole on it greatly to my merlin, with the sharper edges (dremel fixed that, but just thinking of out-of-the-box likability).

I vote for G10 for the handles and VG10 for the blade.

OK, here is a crazy idea: the blade is flat ground already, so if you change the shape of the new G10 handles to also look like the Military, then we would be having a "Baby-Military" to complete the mil-line along with the Para-Military!

Well, if you really want to push the limits, here's a mockup, created with Xara-X, of my "dream" Dragonfly. I took a picture of my SS D'fly and altered it. Now if I can just get it to post...

Deacon's clip is pretty interesting. More like a pen clip than anything I've ever seen on a knife. In fact, it's very reminiscent of the clip on Pelikan fountain pens. This would be a slick modification, if made out of solid metal (not sheet metal like cheap pens).

Believe it or not, the clip in that pic is a distorted image of an real Spyderco clip from a Jess Horn C27. It's solid metal and manages to look both very elegant and totally indestructible at the same time.

Which raises an interesting point. Quite a few small Spydies seem to use three screw stainless clips with the same hole pattern. A fair percentage of the larger ones that use three hole clips also seem to share clips. I wonder if there would be enough of a market for Spyderco to offer this style clip in two sizes as user-installable accessory items. If not both sizes, at least the smaller size, as the smaller knives are probably more likely to be carried in a shirt or suit jacket pocket.

Маке the blade fixable in the half open position. It will be open and halfopen and closed. I think it will not require a lot of changes with backlock - one more cut in the blade bottom.
Thanks, Vassili.

I would like two models. One that keeps the FRN with VG-10, Boye dent and a wire clip. I would also like a compression lock version, SV 30 and drilled titanium handles - something like the Buck Mayo design.

A separate model (along w/ the zytel line) with a G-10 or micarta handle would be nice. I would prefer G-10. Definitely keep the full flat grind.

Ambiclip like on the Delica, Endura, and Spyderhawk.

M2. I don't know what I'd do without M2. Can anyone go without? Tell me who. M2 steel is what makes the sun shine, birdies chirp, and flowers grow. I need M2 and cowbell if I'm to ever make it through the day.

If Spyderco's designers and engineers can't see fit to rid the world of the crime known as Dragonflys without M2, an ambi clip and good old AUS-8A will do.

My .02

VG-10 Blade and nicer hadle mat'l (g10 or micarta).

Or a handle like the Kiwi. A inlay of a spider could be cool.

Otherwise it's great (still needs VG-10)

My preferences:

1) Micarta scales and steel liners; or, aluminum handle; or, titanium handle. I hate plastic handles.

2) Torx screws instead of phillips head.

Oh, and please keep the Boye dent. Love that thing.

If it were up to me:

- Micarta scales. For me, G-10 gets worn and starts to get slippery. Never had a problem with Micarta

- VG-10.

- Removeable clip. If you can fit the reversible type clip from the Delica/Endura, great. Otherwise, just a regular 3 screw reversible clip. But please keep it deep. Meaning, the longer the area where the screws are, the higher it rides in the pocket.

- Tip-up, just like it is. Got no use for tip-down and will not buy one for a carry blade.

- Serrations on the thumb-ramp and the choil, like the ones on the thumb-ramp of the Jester. Having my index finger on the blade of the knife, even though it was designed for it, always made me a little nervous. Serrations would ease my panicky heart.

- Please oh please oh please, don't change the shape of the handle. That little knife locks into my fist like nobody's business. It feels like it's part of my hand. Keep it just the way it is.

- Some people are mentioning jigged bone or various inlays. In my opinion, that just drives the price up, and doesn't add anything. I've never bought a knife with inlays or jigged bone or the like, mostly because it seems too flashy. It's something to be carried in the pocket, taken out, used, then put back. Sure, some people may think it looks nice (not me) but it doesn't make it a better knife. Same thing with the clip. For me, a nice all black or all stainless clip with the discrete bug on it is perfect.

That's my .02 cents.

It looks like a great knife. The only reason I haven't already bought one is the lack of a reversible clip. I hate to encourage Spyderco (or other companies) to ignore the lefties of the world.

I think the dragonfly, particularly the stainless version is a very nice looking knife which makes a great present if engraved, even for non-knife fanatics. My only criticism of the SS version is that it is too slippery and this, coupled with it being a small knife, makes it difficult to open. I don't really know how to solve this problem, but my suggestion would be to keep the shape etc and just perhaps add something to give it more grip. Would a spyderweb pattern on the scales do that? It might make it both more attractive as well as add grip.

Make the handle out of that blue G-10 that is being used on the Dodo or even better yet use Carbon Fiber. I agree with everyone who want an upgraded blade steel. VG-10, M2, D2 ect. :D

Just do another run of CF.Use blue or red CF so as to tell the differance between the old and new ones.
