Dream contact wheel

A question comes to mind...

If you are going to have a larger than say a 14" wheel, why not just flat grind? What is really the advantage? To what end? If needed, a platen with the proper curvature could be made for a whole lot less money...

Craig, for the same reason I like finishing flat grinds on a rotary platen, I personally prefer the feel of having the wheel moving with the belt instead of over the stationary surface of the platen.
I wouldn't say it is "better" or there's any particular advantage, simply my preference.

Same as Mike.....No bump*bump*bump from a hard platen. Also more efficient energy wise.

In an ideal world my shop would be much larger with several grinders. I would like a 3 X 72 belt for more contact with the wheel, and some larger wheels like a 15 - 20 inch contact wheel all variable speed of course.
