Dream Hawk (J.Gingrich and J. Davey Design) what do you think?

J.Davey said:
Porcupine, why would you want the beard facing the hawk (just curious)? Do you mean no top point, but more edge on the bottom, or just extending the beard of the hawk in general?
Yeah, I didn't express myself very well! I'd prefer almost no top point and more edge downwards as this will (for me) make the hawk easier to use for genereal cutting applications if needed.
And I like the look better, although that shouldn't matter of course!:D

Porcupine, what about extending the beard AND keeping the top point? I'm working on a couple of re-designs; one where the beard connects to the handle (similar to the one that...I think...ontario used to make), and one with just an extended beard. We'll see what happens.

Porcupine,
Good going. You got mr thinking again and now I'm re-designing. I'll postcomparison pics when I'm finished. I can't figure out which one I like better.

It looks like a nice collaboration you guys have going. Another nice hawk I may not be able to resist

I like the design, but the handle is too straight IMO.

I like the Brend hatchet's curve in the handle. If I were going to have another custom hawk made (Justin already made me one when he was at ATC) I'd have a curve put in the handle and make the back spike a little longer and sharp on the bottom only.

Just my .02 worth...

Crowing horse, the spike won't be sharpened at all (except for the pointy tip). It will be more of a diamond shaped wedge.

Justin, after tinkering with some other design elements, I've decided to stick with the design that is posted in this thread; it just seems right to me. So, if you could, work out some dimensions for me that you think would be optimal(I suck at that stuff), and then fire me off a quote in 3V and also S7. Thanks Justin!

Will do. I should have something for you around the first of the week. Hope you are having a great Christmas.

i hope this design is avaible for me as well :D i am tired of trying to get a eagle talon and this hawk just looks better anyway

Thanks for the compliment, Witchhunter! If Justin wants to, he can make them for anyone who wants one; it's just cool to know that other people would want something that I helped to design! Today, it's a tomahawk. Tomorrow, who knows? Maybe I can make a go of designing edged tools. It would be a dream come true, as I have been coming up with different knife designs (fixed blades) since I was about 15 (I'm 31 now). When I'm using a knife, I'm always thinking of how the blades could be made more efficient for their intended purpse, or how the handle could be made more user friendly. Okay, I'm babbling now. Thanks again for the compliment; it made my day!

witchhunter

Thanks for the compliment on the design even though it was mostly J.Davey's. By all means shot me an email and we can work out the details. :D

You give me too much credit, Justin. All I did was tweak your design a little. Anywho, I just thought I'd let those interested know that I have completed my life-size cardboard version of this hawk and will be sending it to Justin soon. I used 1/4 inch currogated cardboard to give myself a sense of actual feel (but not weight). I am not one to pat myself on the back very often, but I have to say that the feel of this hawk is going to be outstanding! The dimensions are as follows:

Edge-4&3/4 inches
Spike length-3&1/2 inches
Head length-around 8&3/4 (if I remember correctly)
Overall length-16

hey justin thanks :) i do plan on getting in touch with ya as soon as my funds build back up :( i just bought a couple of new knives. (busse force one and meaner street for those interested)

hey j.davey do you consider this hawk a replacement for you fehrman final judgment in a woodland enviroment?

i guess i am asking the old question of hawk vs. big knife. which works best. i am curious of how it would stack up against my busse battle mistress E in a survival situation.

witchhunter

No worries. I know all about your funds having to build back up  So there is no rush on this end. Sounds like you scored a couple of nice blades. I hope you enjoy them. Thanks again and when you are ready just let me know.

Witchhunter, the whole point of this design is to replace everything. I know it's a huge chunk to bite, but we did our best. It really is meant to be a multi-functional survival tool. At the same time, I didn't want people to apply the 'jack of all trades, master of none' label to it; I want it to be the best at everything it is meant to do. Okay, maybe not the best, but I wouldn't want to ever hear, "it chops adequately...it skins adequately...etc". I want it to do all it was designed to do, and do it well.

If you intend for it to be a tool as well as a weapon then hopefully your cross section will have the right wedge angle and edge grind to not get hopelessly stuck when trying to chop firewood or solid core wood doors.

Nice profile, hope to see if finished soon..

The grind, I'm hoping, will be convex. This is entirely up to Justin Gingrich; he's been making hawks for a long time and people who own them seem to think that they are outstanding choppers.

Just curious. your using qtr inch cardboard for your handle what is
the final dimension of the wood? I mean the roundness of the handle
compared to your actual grip. Are your fingers digging into your palm
on the cardboard? Will the handle have the same section front to back
as the cardboard cut out? Normally your first instinct is your best one
unless you have a spouse then there is instinct and permission and
permission beats instinct!

Fixer, the handle carboard hawk was more to help me get a feel for what I wanted the overall dimenesions of the hawk to be. On the mock-up, the handle is just kind of square in cross section, so they feel a little bigger than they will on the real one due to radiusing the micarta (I took thiss into account while sizing the handle). I hope that answers your question.
