Dream Hawk (J.Gingrich and J. Davey Design) what do you think?

Cool, yes that answears my question but how much are we talking
for a custom hawk? Seems a lot of thought is going into this.

Price would depend on the steel used. I'll leave it up to Justin to give quotes/prices. The one he's going to make for me won't be inexpensive (but still less expensive than a typical custom...I will say, though, that it is an excellent price considering the size of the piece and the work that will go into it), since I'm going with S7 steel. I was going to go with 3V, but it was suggested that S7 would be better for this because it has more impact resistance. 3V would hold it's edge better, but from what I've read, S7 is no slouch in this department, either. It' will be black with black micarta grips. Still deciding if I want to go with red fiber spacers on the handle, too.

i have a tops knife with red spacers under the black micarta. looks really nice. does justin have other blade finishes? black is probably what i would want anyway but a satin finish would be sweet as well

Witchhunter, I can't speak for Justin, but I would think a satin finish wouldn't be a problem for him. Have you seen the polish he does on some of his hawks??? Check out the Ranger Knives website and you'll see what I mean. You could use 'em as a frickin' mirror!

witchhunter

I can do just about any finish from powder coat to satin, beadblast or a full polish. Hope that helps. :D

Hey there, Madfast! I have had some serious financial set-backs as of late, so I have had to put this on the back burner (unfortunately). I still have every intention of having Justin make this bad boy soon, but I have some other things that need to be taken care of first. I have a full-scale cardboard mock-up/template ready to go, but I just figure it's pointless to send it to Justin until I can afford to send a check along with it. I just don't want to have it made 'half way'; in other words, I want Justin to use the best materials (S7 or 3V for the steel) possible when the time comes, and that ups the price considerably. Justin has been totally cool about the project, and I can't wait to have it made! Things are getting back in order for me now, so it shouldn't be much longer. Thanks for the interest!

Good to hear things are getting back on track for you. you actually inspired me to ask justin to make a blade of my own design so i guess i should thank you, Thanks!

can't wait to see the hawk!

PS: 10V? why 10V? it's very wear resistant, but is it tough?

Okay, I'm resurrecting this thread. Sorry. Look at the design and see if it is something you'd buy. I will post pics of the life-size mock-up soon (held in hand and with various grips). I apologize to everyone (and especially Mr. Gingrich) for falling off the face of the Earth for the last few months about this project...been working on a magazine as an editor <www.virus-mag.com>...shameless plug. Well, now I want to kick-start it again. Maybe get new opinions or suggestions. ;)

well after purchasing a rmj eagle talon i would prefer a hawk that is ground for the wilderness. the rmj has a very stout wedge that is more of a robust breaching tool. i would rather have something ground like the traditional spike hawks for chopping uses on wood.

Yes, I'm bringing this back to life. Why? Because I still appreciate oppinions of those old and new. I will, more than likely, be asking Justin (Ranger Knives...duh) to make this soon, so I want any suggestions on improvements. Please read my explination of the various aspects of the tool first! Be well!:)

I'm bringing this thread back because my heart is stiil totally into it! I want to know steel suggestions, improvement ideas...ANYTHING! This will be made...someday. If you read through the thread, you'll understand every element has a purpose with this design. Regardless, I want input from you all! If I'm gonna' pay to have it made, I want something I can count on! Please, your advice is VERY welcome!

(HUGE THANKS to Justin! I will still look to him to do the project, as long as cash allows...I know his work is becoming VERY popular!)

I am almost finished a small full tang hatchet about 14 inches long, 1/8 inch
saw blade steel, I'm guessing its 1090 or something. It was about 3 feet across and had Toronto saw co. on it I believe, as well as a good coat of rust. I'll post some pics as soon as I get my camera back, left it at a halloween party:)
Great thread, love seeing the design process at work.

Yep, I'm bringing it back again. The 'hawk market seems to be bigger than ever, and I still love this design. Before anyone mis-judges me, I just want to put it out there why I STILL HAVEN'T HAD THIS MADE: I'm 100% completely broke due to: 1. Bad decisions in a past relationship (completely my own fault, but...well you know...shiznit happens) 2. Trying to work my way out of said problems. Enough said. The point is, I have had a passion for edged tools for over 20 years and, above the many designs I have for practical knives and survival tools, I still think this is the best I've come up with. Keep in mind that I have camped, hiked, fished, etc., since I could walk. Yes, I know there are many of my respected peers here that have done MUCH more, but we're talking about me here:D ! This is the one tool I would choose above all others in a "Oh sh*t, I'm screwed" scenerio. A ton of thought went into this design, and I am very proud of it. I want to hear opinions, suggested tweaks, and anything else. This will be made as soon as I can possibly afford it (hopefully, still by Justin). I'm just still interested in any improvement ideas.
