Dream SAK

Why do they remove those items in Alox models it cant be that hard to add a spot for them in the scales.

The toothpick and tweezers are sandwiched between the plastic scales and the rear plate they fasten to. Each side of the knife is a two piece system and it is the pressure between these that holds the toothpick and tweezers in place. Alox scales lack that rear plate.

Oh, my dream SAK would be a Pioneer/Electrician with pliers and file added.

I'd like to chime in with a biased vote for the Handyman. It's my constant EDC and has been for ages. They don't make this model any more, but the Evogrip 18 has the same tool set, and the Evogrip 17 has the corkscrew instead of the Phillips screwdriver.

Yes, the Huntsman (if you like smooth celidor), but check out the Victorinox Safari Trooper, not currently made, but there are plenty available out there and well worth the hunt! You get a 108mm stout knife with just the right four blades/tools: a large spearpoint blade, the best saw around - it also doubles as a screwdriver and opener, an awl, and a corkscrew that can hold a mini-screwdriver. Each of these four blades/tools is thicker/stouter and longer than other similar Victorinox blades/tools. It has textured red or olive nylon scales that provide a great grip and best of all, a lanyard hole that goes through the knife handle rather than a dinky split ring that gets in the way. Here's some examples:

Two tips: Be sure you get a real Victorinox and not one of the lesser-quality "foreign" versions that range from OK to pure trash. And be sure to get one with its snap-on metal saw guard (not shown here, it can be made from a coke/beer can) - your fingers will thank you for it!

Wenger Professional 4 layer, alox/elinox not needed but preferred.
Main blade, cap lifter, saw, awl, sacking needle, pruner blade

I would even be content with plastic scaled or a new alox run...
These were made back in the 70's for 4 years or so and I haven't been able to find one (in Any condition) for the last 3-4 years of looking.

I always preferred Wenger a lot more, actually

Both the full SAKs....

and the tools/implements themselves, their design

That is a really nice model. Does it have the tweezers and toothpick as well? Hard to see from the pictures.

With all those tools isn't it a little thicker than the huntsman? I do love the evidence look though.

As others have said, the Huntsman is the thinnest Victorinox model with all the tools you're looking for.

I carried one for 10 years until I realized that if I could live without the saw and the small blade (and I can) I could drop get rid of two layers by switching to the Compact...which is where I've been for the 20 years since.

I'm not familiar with the Huntsman. Does that Handyman/Evo 18 really have all that many more? Lessee.... Per SAKwiki, Handyman is an 85mm with 4 layers. 6 tools front; awl and Phillips screwdriver back (or corkscrew if you go for the Forester/Evo 17). Huntsman is 91mm with 4 tool layers. 6 tools front, awl, hook and corkscrew back. That makes it seem like they'd be the same width and with the Huntsman being slightly longer.

I haven't seen a side by side comparison, though. The texture of the Evo scales may make the Evo 17/18 thicker than the Huntsman.

Edited to add: Good luck to you in your search, regardless. There are enough SAK variations that no doubt the one you need/want is out there somewhere. :-)

I definitely don't need the saw but it would be nice. I looked at the company after your comment and the only one I could find had a pin. Is there another one with the toothpick?I definitely think thinner could be better.

Thank you for the well wishes. I honestly just looked at a few photos online and didn't compare the actual measurements. It just looked really beefy compared to the huntsman. With your measurements I'll definitely be taking a second look. I'd love to have a more compact model but the design of the evo is very intriguing to me.

The "Compact" has the "plus" scales which give you a straight pin and a small pen in addition to the standard toothpick and tweezers.

Sorry I typed Compact but it autocorrected to company. I definitely didn't read over that post. I didn't realize you get the pin and pen in addition to the toothpick and tweezers. That's pretty awesome. Now I just have to determine if I can live without the saw. The small blade I can ditch in a heartbeat.

I am waiting and wishing for an alox tinker with olive alox scales. Not something like the tinker, not something with almost the same tool set or even more tools. Just the tinker configuration with od alox scales. I would probably buy 3 to always have a back up

Keep wishing. In the meantime, I have a standard super Tinker coming in. I almost wish I had realized they had a deluxe version. Oh well, live and learn

I prefer thinner SAKs but the Evo look so nice I always end up carrying them first

I've seen the tinker mentioned a few times now. What is it that makes that tool so popular? It wasn't even on my radar of interest until this thread.
