Dream Shop - Old Shop Demolition finished. Demo photos added.

I got home as the sun was setting and took some fast shots with the cellphone. They got the soffits installed. Siding 2/3 up one end, all the way on one side. and the other end started. I suspect they will wrap the trim and finish most of the siding work tomorrow, and finish the details Wednesday.

Close up of the door hardware.
I am going to cut a 24" bar of 1/2" aluminum and fit it between the door frame and the door jam ( from the inside). This will be marked and the dead-bolt socket milled out. When installed will 4.5" #10 screws through the jam/metal plate/studs, the door should be pretty much impossible to force open.

Thanks.

Notice the large IN (upper) and OUT (lower) air vents that are on the side. The covers aren't snapped on yet. They will exhaust the air from the bench vac systems in the grinding room and the hot shop benches. Those two areas have separate cyclone systems, with the hot shop vac designed to separate sparks and heavy grit; and the workbench's designed to separate metal chips and wood dust.

Note - The upper IN vent will have the damper taken off when the hood is put on.

Personally I'd rather have a security system complete with video cams. Way cheaper than you think. With those systems I'd rather leave the door unlocked so they don't destroy the door upon break in. Because if a addict decides to break in he's or she is coming in. Trust me I know this coming from living in WV.

My brother told me I should protect my shop with a 9mm, couple of clips, and a box of shells.
Got it all, but not sure what to do with it.

Siding is all done. When the sun comes up I will take good photos.
I will work on building the porch landing and proper steps today.

I had a funny thought last night while going over my lest for the lumber yard today. I had 8 bags of concrete on the list for the 4X4 posts . It occurred to me that I still had a couple dozen bags of Cast-o-lite 30 in the storage. I can't think of any reason beyond cost why it would not work for anchoring the posts just as well as concrete. I have more than I want to store in the shop anyway, so why not use it on the shop?

Maybe a stupid question, but what does the local fire code say about emergency exits? When you have visitors or students over perhaps different rules apply than when you're the sole user. But I see 1 garage door which opens up and 1 door which opens inwards which I don't think would pass over here (EU) as viable escape routes. Not trying to rag on your awesome workshop in any way!

It is an "accessory building", and not under the codes of an "occupied dwelling". There are no fire codes involved beyond the fire block in the eves on the property line side.

As far as inward swing vs outward swing, that only applies to commercial buildings. Most all homes have inward swing entry/exit doors.

I will take a bunch of better photos Saturday and will show the hoods on the vents, the finished porch and steps, and a few shots of the interior.

That's my point exactly. Since you plan on doing classes etc, does it still qualify as a home and not as a commercial building with the relevant requirements? But as mentioned, I'm from a different part of the world so YMMV.

I won't be holding classes in any commercial way. I will have students over to learn. The shop will not be run as a business. It is a residential accessory building, where I will putter away for the next 20-25 years happily.

There are interesting alarm systems that use huge canisters of OC pepper spray
When the alarm goes off, it fills the room with pepper spray.
Great for Smaller high security rooms where you want to protect the valuables.

I have a security system left over from my old days as an installer for Gamewell. I will have it set to a multi-stage alarm. The first is 10 seconds of minor alarm to let you know to shut off the system. Next is a loud alarm Klaxon for 20 seconds. Third is a surplus air raid siren. It would be impossible to stay in the building when it goes off. Something like 140 db at 20 feet. If you stayed inside it would lead to deafness for sure. It will shut off after 5 minutes and the system will reset to the alarm status. Until the door is shut, the system will go off three more times.
