Dress Pants Carry Question

Good knives for slacks carry:
Case Peanut
Swiss army knife (SAK) classic
SAK rambler

Anything smaller and lighter than a delica isn't really going to do it for you in a defensive situation. Maybe one of those small retractable box cutters would do the trick? Being around hospitals though you should know that it isn't a good idea to go cutting the kinds of vagrants that hang around hospital parking lots. Better to have some good running shoes or a heavy bludgeon of some sort. Something heavy, that people in your line of work would carry to and from work. A gun is also a good option.

Al Mar Ultralights, with the clip removed, fit your description very well. Comes in different sizes and blade styles as well.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I think some type of pocket holster may be the ticket. The alterations to the pants was a very good idea as well.

I'll also put the clip back on the Delica and see how well that works clipped IWB.

Either of those is a good option, but be aware that a pocket holster might not work in lighter weight pants. In khakis or dockers, I think the holster or a small slip (like the CRK or knivesshipfree slips) would work great. However, I've found that even a fairly small leather slip can print if you're wearing very lightweight dress pants. In that case, definitely try out the coin pocket within the front pocket. All of my lighter dress slacks happen to have such a pocket and I've found it works great so long as your knife fits in the pocket (not a problem if you're having your tailor or dry cleaner put in custom pockets).

All that having been said, I really question the efficacy in a self defense roll of any knife that is small and light enough for dress carry. I second the suggestion of just keeping a defense-oriented knife (or just pepper spray) in a jacket or bag that you don't have on your person at the office, but just carry with you from the office to the car.

I carry a Benchmade Kulgera with a titanium deep carry clip. The knife doesn't look like anything other than a pen. The clip can be used on any standard 3 hole knife.

Pretend to be a attention seeking, social media junkie. Then you can carry a heavy, metal selfie-stick. :D

Move the carry to your back pocket.

Run the inner pocket liner of one of your rear pockets on a sewing machine to create a horizontal pocket just wide enough to accept your knife of choice and tall enough to hold all but the top 1" or so of the knife. The top 1" + of the knife should be easily grasped.

I carry an old fashion slider cell phone this way, as I loath belt holsters. By putting the pocket in a pocket on the outer side of the pocket, more towards the hip and less towards the butt crack, the long knife won't interfere with sitting hardly at all. Imprints a lot less than front pocket carry.

Get over the "I can't sew" thing. Borrow a machine. This is a very easy fix.

I stole the idea from the camping books by Cliff Jacobsen, who carried his preferred Schrade 6OT in this manner (sort of like a Buck 110).

I've done this with all my slacks on the LRP.

Alternatively, you can find rear pocket knife holsters.

A lot of good recommendations on the knives.
I don't have any personal experience with these, but BladeHQ has some pen cap knife lanyards you might be interested in.

Has printing ever been an issue in your office? Do people ask what you have in your pockets? Just curious. Most people aren't that observant, and if they did notice a bulge in your pocket they either wouldn't care or would assume it was something else.

Is it a legal issue or does your office have a strict policy against knives. That sucks if the security people don't want to do their job.

^^^ That's what I do.

Something like an alox cadet Swiss Army knife would be ideal for carry at work because people don't find them offensive. You could probably get away with using it more. For carry to and from your car something else that is stored in a desk, locker, briefcase, etc would be better. Maybe a small fixed blade or a larger folder?

- I carry my Benchmade Kulgera all of the time with the deep carry clip. My co-workers never noticed. My wife came out one night to a happy hour with a Kershaw Chive, which has a thick and shiny clip. They immediately asked what was clipped to her pocket.

The average person is not very observant. A security guard or police office is probably more observant. I was standing in line at a fast food restaurant about 15 years ago and noticed the guy in line behind me had a glock in a holster on his belt. He was dressed in jeans and casual shirt just like I was. (No provision for open carry in my state.) I didn't notice a badge but I didn't feel like carefully inspecting the guy. When we left I noticed a marked car in the parking lot, probably belonging to the guy.

My dress pants seem to have pretty deep pockets so if you weren't concerned about printing then I think you could carry a larger folder such as a Benchmade 710 or Spyderco Endura. I think a pocket sewn to the back of the pants pocket would carry the weight well enough and these 2 knives are relatively light. Similarly I think inside waistband would allow carry of a pretty big folder. But if I was really concerned about self defense I would carry more than the knife, maybe something like a heavy briefcase, and I would also be very careful about where I walked and when. Part of the battle in self defense is being alert to your surroundings and not letting stray people get close to you.

Right now small, out of sight pocket knives are a gray area. Not banned yet, but soon will be. There are a bunch of liberals (mostly management) that will make your life hell if they find out you have a knife. One of my coworkers was recently written up by mgt because he left his Case peanut on his desk. It was repeatedly referred to as a "weapon":jerkit:
