Dress up knives? Why the need for a gentlemans folder?

The people who don't understand the need for Gentleman's Folders also don't understand why people wear nice watches instead of using their cell phone or a Timex.

The people who don't understand why you might need a knife at a wedding/funeral/business meeting have probably never had a loose thread in their suit or their wife's dress. A small really sharp knife will do a much better job than a pair of scissors for that.

Like you I don't dress up much but when I do I always carry my William Henry. They don't seem to get much love on BladeForums but I think it's a beautiful, well built and very functional knife. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to beat on it like I would one of my Hinderers or Striders but its a great blade and it's never failed my needs when carried. As many mentioned above, it's definitely a "mancessory" and one one of the few pieces of jewelry (watch/pen) suitable for men to wear/carry.

AMEN!

I didn't buy my foliage green G-10 Spyderco Delica with the thought of it being a "gentleman's knife" -- but I thought it dressed up nicely enough to accompany me to the last wedding I attended. Of course, I could have just been deluding myself... :)

I don't get dressed up much at all and can't see the need for a knife at a wedding or funeral or even a business meeting. I have always been intrigued by the term "gentlemans folder" What exactly are you guys cutting?

Limes and bra straps.

I wore the Spyderco Kris at my wedding.
That knife counts as a gentleman's knife in my book.:)

I used it to cut the wedding cake.

I wore a custom CPM-3V sharpened-clip fighter at my wedding. Why? Because I can :)

Forgive the clumsy paraphrasing, but someone once asked Bill Moran why he carried big bowies all the time, and I think his answer applies to gent's folders as well... "Because they're fun!"

Gent's folders can also soften the psychological effects for those who are not understanding of our fascination. Granted how you act plays a major role in how your knife is perceived, but gent's knives tend to be smaller, and fancier, and draw less negative attention.

Likewise, as was suggested to me, there is the SAK/Multitool route. These items are perceived as tools, and nobody will think twice if you pull one. Some even come in different colors, so you can coordinate with your boots, or cummerbund, whatever the hell that is...

"Limes and bra straps" is the best answer ever given for "why do you carry a knife?".

When I got married, I carried a Victorinox Tourist SAK in the pocket of my tux. Why? So I'd be ready for anything, of course. :) The same knife rode in my pocket during the births of all three of our kids as well, and I still carry it quite a bit.

My go-to gent's knife, though, is my Case peanut.

In many parts of the country people will think you are crazy for carrying a knife. The more aggressive the knife appears the crazier you appear. That is the beauty of a gentlemen's folder. You still can EDC a knife and exist in your current 'circle' of non-knife sheeple.

Many great answers have been given: man's jewellery like a fine watch, feel naked without a knife, a good excuse to buy a great knife ( and support artistic knife makers), it's a modern equivalent of the gentleman's sword or dagger, knives are actually useful even to a "gentleman", and a fancy knife is less likely to scare people and to be appropriate in polite company or among sheeple were some of them, and I agree with them all if I can use them to justify my knife addiction :)

If I polish my Spydie Tenacious it looks pretty dressy! I have a peanut I bring to occasions that would raise eyebrows with anything more robust.

Heck, I wore a small fixed blade on my wedding day, IWB!

Nothing like being stabbed while mourning a loved one because of a disagreement. :(

Really? Most knife enthusiasts would never consider stabbing someone. I never understand why people get funny about a knife in various situations. What is wrong with carrying at a funeral? I wear a neck knife making whooopie lol.

We like gentleman's knives because:
They're pretty.
They look nicer when wearing something nice.
You never know when you need to cut something. I carry to weddings/funerals because there are still things that pop up, and a nice pocket knife is great compliment to formal wear.
Some people work business jobs and don't want to carry something un-gentleman like to work.
They're less threatening. They look nicer, usually aren't huge, and even people who don't like knives or are scared don't feel as threatened by it.
That, and if you like it and like the way it looks/feels, why not?
It's also nice to have your knives be able to cover EVERYTHING you can think of that may apply to your life lol. So they make knives for everything. One for hard use, one for light use, one for regular EDC, one for suits, one for a beater, one for your keys, and ones to just switch if you want.

There are several reasons, but the only reason that really counts is that you like the knife and enjoy it.

Bought my last EDC folder a few days ago (received it yesterday).

I wanted something slim, aesthetically pleasing, with good steel and elegant handle materials.

I narrowed it down to a few:
CRK Mnandi
Benchmade Shoki 480-1
Russel's 3.0 Lockback (CF or Titanium)
Le Thiers (Hadn't decided yet)
Or Spyderco Air.

I picked the Shoki 480-1 since it had a lot going for it.
