Dress up knives? Why the need for a gentlemans folder?

Because I don't want to raise too many eyebrows when at a large function. There are getting to be too many rules as it is, and I don't want more added because I pulled out "tacticool" knife when a small non threatening knife would have done the same job.

The key word is 'dressing up'. You said it in the question.... The reason is to
Have a knife that goes along with the outfit/occasion. Something that's appropriate to wear with a suit or tux. It's dressy and doesn't attract tons of attention, but it will get the job done. Aka. A true gentlemen and his folder.

The majority of my knives are tactical folders. I work in a professional medical setting where carrying a tactical folder is not appropriate and that's where a gentleman's folder comes in.

Women have bags, shoes, and jewelry to accessorize with. I have my knives.

I wear my Terzuola slipit for weddings, there's always loose threads and such that need to be cut when you're in the wedding party.

Because chances are if you are in a suit, you are in a crowd that is going to look at you funny if you bust out your tactical ninja parascubasniper zombie killer knife to cut something.

So you have a classy knife, to go with your classy occasion, and not scare the horses.

Lots of gorgeous traditional slipjoints will do the trick; a cheaper (and my preferred) option is a well-maintained Victorinox with black scales.

I just whip out my uber sickly beastly coolest ever TACTICAL mantis in case of zombies!

I wore this (and busted it out) to my own wedding. Does it now count as a gentleman's folder?

Nothing like being stabbed while mourning a loved one because of a disagreement. :(

Wow, the knifeworld has just as many fudds as the gunworld apparently. That's just the type of "blood in the streets" nonsense we're fighting in md in the fight to get shall-issue permits. This is a response based in the belief that a knife is only used as a weapon, and that the presence of the knife will cause an individual to become violent that otherwise wouldn't be. Someone could easily break a bottle and stab someone, punch them in the throat, or come up with a variety of crafty ways to cause bodily harm in any setting if they are a violent person.

In reality, a knife is a piece of some hard material with an edge on it. Usually some form of steel, sometimes not. An edged tool is useful primarily for cutting things. At my soon to be sister-in-law's wedding(engaged to her twin sis now), my buck vantage pro came in very handy for cutting ribbon, digging wicks from candles, cutting flowers, cutting tags off dresses, helping to peel the top of champaign bottles...etc. I was at a church, hotel, a couple people's houses and a bar or two. My knife never found its way into another human being...but if some violent person(as mentioned above) presented a threat to a loved one, I was comforted that it COULD be used for defense of myself or my loved ones.

As for the role of "gentleman's folder"...it's just like matching shoes to the correct use(or watches as others have stated). I've got a cold steel spartan, the same way I have merrell moab's. They're both big and ugly and useful when hiking or doing rougher/dirtier work. I've also got some spyderco, buck, sog, crkt, benchmade...folders that are much nicer looking and smaller that partner better with dress shoes and a suit. I think a CR knife is a beautiful all-purpose folder that would be equally at home for me with my moab's or my dress shoes...but they're pricey(as are suits compared to sport clothes) and I've got a wedding to pay for.

A knife is absolutely a tool of a gentleman. A gentleman is mannerly, self-sufficient, and tough. A gentleman handles the responsibilities that come along with freedom and does not harm the innocent. They also possess reason and are in a constant search for self-improvement. A gentleman would not shy away from a tool like a gun, knife or axe because "they're scary and icky". He would use them to make his world around him easier and safer. If you don't get that, you don't get it.

This is going to sound stupid but back when I was stoner most people in Utah that I met used a nice looking gent folder for scraping the resin out of the bowl during social functions. My dad himself carried a buck folder for the sole purpose of scraping his pipe everywhere he went. They look good by the way.

I find a slim folder with about a 3" blade perfect -- large enough to do 98% of what I will do when not in the woods (cut limes or apples, open packages, etc.), and yet it is comfortable in the pockets of business trousers.....

If I carry anything much bigger I like a clip to keep the weight out of the bottom of my pockets. And a lot of places, that attracts unwelcome attention.

Ha! And for that pesky bag of cheetos at a 'social function'

I thought gentleman's folders were supposed to be more people friendly until a cop refered to my Boker Kwaiken as a "sticker". Now I am convinced that people see knives as weapons no matter their appearance.
