"Drop Shutty" - Can We Have the Conversation?

I must be an old boomer but I always considered a knife that “drop shut” to be flawed and undesirable. My personal preference is a controlled, hydraulic action on washers or a smooth slip joint.

And to answer a previous question - as far as I know the first person to use bearings in a pivot was RJ Martin. He was using them in the late 1990’s - during the birth of the flipper.

I have no use for most of the knives I own and have given up trying to justify why I keep purchasing more so it makes sense I should add a few drop-shutty knives to the collection because why not.

Also the first time I saw and used a drop shutty knife I really thought it was a sign of poor design and manufacturing and that it felt cheap - little did I know it was an intentional feature and an emerging trend.

I know people who won't use any folding knives because they think they will fold up on their fingers someday. I've never had a problem with keeping my fingers out of my slip joint knives (that snap shut), friction folders, or my knives that drop shut. I think, like most things, it's entirely personal preference. I enjoy the snappy action of my Case xx stockman in a different way than I enjoy the action on my Kizer Feist (drop shut).

I agree that the "fidget" aesthetic is just a fad.

I'm a Millennial. I love the smooth "drop shuttiness" of my Grimsmo Norseman and my Koenig Arius. I also love the slow roll of my many CRK folders. Lots of anger in here about people in different generations and with different preferences. Here's an idea, if you like drop-shutty knives, buy them. If you don't, then save your money. There's LOTS of options out there, so buy what you like.

Who's angry??

Oh wait, a millennial on the internet is offended...thank you for the lecture.

"Drop shutty" is like "chicken tendy" and "poopy diapy", it's a symptom of a simple childlike mind. This is what happens when when kids grow up in front of a computer/tv screen getting dumbed down by nonsensical "entertainment" instead of going outside and doing things kids used to do; like build forts, traps, carve spears out of sticks, ride bicycles, use their brain etc.

Why the are they needing to " fidget" so badly, what is wrong with these people? Junkies fidget when they are doped up on meth or fiending for their next fix.
Sheesh, that's harsh. Using your brain is over-rated. Let Google do the heavy lifting.

I'm an apathetic gen X-er. Y'all can all go to hell.

Buy what you like, and as much as I like fidget knives, I understand they aren't for everyone. Just means more for me.

I agree. Hey, are we supposed to be afraid of kittens?
Well, I am the Kitten of Death. So you should be very afraid. Luckily, I don't get angry easily. I get annoyed, but on the rare occasion I do get angry, cue the Judas Priest because "some heads are going to roll."

For me, a knife is a knife.

I'm mostly used to sebenzas, a slow open and shut type of knife.
Recently got a shirogorov, and it is fast!

I don't mind either, and won't seek out drop shut or slow open/close, as I can adapt to any knife.

I gotta admit, "drop shutty" sounds like a cheap set of mini blinds or a busted garage door opener.

I understand the point of the thread is that drop shutty is a trend or fad that is a relatively new phenomenon. I'm sure there will be another knife feature or technique that will take its place. I note that with the spidey-flick opening, nail nicks (deep, long ones) are making a resurgence. lol

Can we all just get along and focus on the REAL problem?…

Tip-Down users HAVE to die!

I’m not critical of users who like a free falling blade when unlocked. I’m critical of influencers/ who use the phrase “drop-shutty” and think it’s a marvel in knife performance.

Besides, all the Kool Kids are already saying “droppy-shut”. That other term is, like, 5 minutes ago, Grandpa.

Edit: It’s rather telling that my auto correct keeps trying to change “shutty” to “shitty”. Skynet is never wrong.
