Dual Survival, I like these guys

On Survivalpodcast, Dave has referred to Cody as his brother and has voiced a great deal of respect for him.

Both Cody and Dave have stated much of the show is set up for TV.

Cody has previously stated that due to filming schedules, animals have been 'placed' for the presenter to come across.

Given that no production company in the world will fund a crew to film a presenter for the great amount of time that it may take to capture an animal in the wild (as in a genuine survival situation) this makes sense and does not detract from the purpose of the finished episode.

I haven't seen the show. I don't get cable and you tube is blocked at work and too slow at home. I have seen short clips that seemed cool.

But my comment is they both have really nice knives.

In Southern Ohio, "brother" is used in place of "man", "dude", etc...
And its used gratuitously by my Southern Ohio friends, let me tell you, brother.

When I go hunting there is 3 brothers that live down there. When we are visiting them (They are like family to us, now, especially my dad, been going there for 41 years) we call them Brother Joe, Brother Johhny and the other is just Jesse.

Only seen 1 episode, but it was entertaining so far.

Even though it was more of a joke, by far my favorite duo is Bear Grylls and Will Ferrell. That episode of Man vs. Wild was hilarious!

I saw the preview for the new series, it stars Cody and Myke's wife. Cody sans footgear, and Ruth? sans, well never mind. And, for the PC I'm joking.

I met Cody London at Rabbitstick gathering and he's very arrogant and self absorbed to put it simply. I sat in on one of his classes and he spent more time cutting down :rolleyes:other survival experts and their ways of doing things. The guy has a big chip on his shoulder, but maybe thats typical for folks in order to survive in the light of the media and attention.

Not that he needs or would ever ask defending, but having known Cody long before this TV show, he is the same humble guy years ago as he is today. I have never seen what you are referring too about slamming an individual "expert." He is a good guy and the real deal. Nuff said.

Perhaps you are mistaking passion and/or someone trying drive home what he considers a life/death point for arrogance.

And I was at Rabbitstick too and passed by his classes, I didn't hear any of that and two of the students in his class I talked too stated they wanted to go his school...

Your mug is probably in my video as I snapped some shots of his class...

I've not met Cody in person but have talked to him on the phone and through email and found him to be a really cool, down to earth guy.

Over the last 1.5 weeks I think I watched entire first season on youtube.

I like the show. Both guys appear to have skills and knowledge. Together they make a good survival entertainment duo.

My favorite survival personality is Ray Mears. He comes across as a teacher and it's clear he knows his stuff.

I like watching Les Stroud too. I grew up in the same forests as he did. My entire childhood was spent playing/hunting/fishing in the forest and really like watching the episodes filmed in northern Ontario. Memories of home!

I never heard of Cody before the show. I watched some of Dave's youtube last year and remember not being impressed with his choice of the Tracker knife. At least he's not using it in the show!

I liked seeing how each of them use their knives. Cody is very precise and carefull with his Mora knife. Dave is a little more rough with his. My style is more of the precise and careful side similar to Cody's.

Good entertainment for me. I'm glad to have found the videos on youtube.

despite all his expert advise, i do wish that cody would scout for a sarape* or something.
whilst walking barefooted is commendable, going totally native is something of the ideal metamorphosis for the new age woodsman.

i'm not so sure the network executives would dig that. lol

I really liked Dual Survival though. My only problem with it was that they had to point out that Cody had no shoes on at every turn. I guess that makes sense though, considering that no everyone was watching from the first episode like I was.

I don't watch much TV, but I do enjoy these shows...most are just entertainment and good cinematography (I actually give Bear Grylls' camera crew a lot of credit).

With that said my rankings are:

Ray Mears (I would include Ron Hood although his are production videos)

Les Stroud (mostly Survivorman, but his other shows have been well done)

Cody and Dave's Dual Survivor (A little Grylls-esk, but the most interesting match of personalities for a "survival" show).

Man, Woman, Wild (actually very well done and much better than I expected)

Man vs. Wild (I admit I watch it for the entertainment, but the Will Ferrell episode was probably the best:D)

Again, the different locations are always entertaining for viewing pleasure, and you can actually pull a few "gold nuggets" of information or different techniques, but overall, these are really just "reality TV" shows in an outdoors setting. I still much prefer these shows to 99% of all the other sitcoms or evening entertainment shows.

From an educational stand-point, Ray Mears' shows are probably the best and all his settings are pretty tame and controlled, but his focus on technique and skills surpass all the others. Again, if you haven't seen Ron Hoods' videos, I would put him on the same level regarding how well done his videos are along with the technique of teachings skills.

I had a few of these series on DVD when deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan...best downtime I could take was a couple hours watching a few episodes:thumbup:

Although not for me, Cody has expressed on a number of the Dual survival episodes I have seen "that going barefoot puts him in touch with nature"
But in the valley of the volcanoes in Peru he said it slows you down and makes you notice what is going on around you.
A pro hunter, guide and author from my neck of the woods Ted Mitchell bow hunted barefoot he maintained shoes/boots were just too noisy.
I also like that he uses a Mora he doesn't abuse it and it does everything he asks of it. I haven been able to work out what Dave carries at times it looks like a Benchmade Nimravous but I'm will to be corrected. It doesn'tlook like the one on his website.

I like Survivorman Ok, but Les sure seems to make a bunch of bonehead moves for being an "expert" which just goes to show what the definition of that word can easily mean, "still makes some major mistakes now and again". Three days in the jungle without drying your feet? Getting a sunburn on your first day in the hottest desert on the planet and then still not effectively protecting your skin from the sun? I'm a complete urban boy with the outdoors skills of your average net dweeb and even I know better than that.

Dual Survival is pretty cool for what it is and I seem to side with Cody more than Dave as well. It's great that Dave can punk down a pig or something, but it kind of ticks me off that he goes and kills a 40lbs pig when can use maybe 5-10% of it before it goes bad. They both know that you can go for their average duration of their stay without food so it just strikes me as being wasteful and disrespectful.

Man vs Wild is good entertainment and his crew is a back of frickin' machines. People dis bear for going for the extremes, but I find some information in the noise. I think that he is effectively telling us that if you're completely hosed, you can give this crazy crap a go that wouldn't ever occur to your normally and it just might give you an extra day. I'll leave the cliff jumping to the guy with EMTs on standby.

Some British sites picked at Dave's resume - but not Cody's. I enjoy their show - look forward to new episodes. I miss Les Stroud's 'Survivorman'! Mykel taught me the value of a good looking woman to be stuck in the boonies with, for sure. I learned more from 'Bear' Grylls, too, than most - specifically, the importance of a satelite phone and keeping a helicopter service 'on retainer'. Also, the importance of hydration... no pachyderm dung squeezings for me, thank you just the same. First and foremost - it's entertainment - sometimes, with a message.

Going barefoot is workable in some situations, but to do so in the swamps of Louisiana is certifiably insane.

obo4stir, Are we talking about the same Cody? The guy I'm talking about would do anything to get in front of a camera and say anything, especially degrading the military ways in order to make himself look good. Maybe he had a bad Rabbit "stock":D gathering that year? I'm not one to judge too harshly, but he was indeed arrogant and narcissistic and I wasnt the only one observing that. He often made fun of the way the military operates in survival situations and also other backwoodsmen .
