Dual Survival, I like these guys

Dual Survival is not my favorite "survival" themed show, but I do watch it and enjoy it along with the other shows on Discovery like Bear and Myke and his hot wife. I couldn't stomach Les' latest show 'Beyooooooooond Survival', but his original show was ok, if a little boring in parts. To be sure, Les had his support crew and satellite communicator too, so I don't know why people knock the others guys for having them. These are television studio produced shows. Heck, Les even had a hair dresser on set! Plus he was sponsered by Columbia Sportswear. So, it's not like he just grabbed all 50 lbs of his camera gear on his own and headed out in the woods to film a documentary. He had an outline he followed for ideas he wanted to show just like the other shows. But, to get back to the point..I hope in the new season of Dual Survival, they drop the narration by the announcer guy. Just let Dave and Cody do their own narration like the other shows do. Sorry about the lack of paragraphs...my ENTER button doesn't work.:D

Love Cody, except for the barefoot thing. That's a pretty big except, I think

I have no use for Fake Ranger Dave. What does he add but killing things that are tied to a stake or drinking water straight from the Amazon?

has the new season started

They are filming the new season right now. I guess they will start showing it some time in the next few months.

We all should know that it is just a TV show. The only thing they are doing is showing what one should do, and or the skills they would need if they were ever put in that situation.

So, it's not like he just grabbed all 50 lbs of his camera gear on his own and headed out in the woods to film a documentary. He had an outline he followed for ideas he wanted to show just like the other shows.

Uhm well yeah, he did take 50lbs of camera gear and headed out to the woods. In a few episodes he had a planned route. In his pilot episode, they randomly picked a spot by throwing a dart at a map, then he was blind folded on the plane and dumped off without any clue as to where he was. Only the crew knew his location.

Still, I find it hilarious you comparing a full crew interacting with stars with 1) being on your own, 2) lugging your camera gear with you, 3) having to set up all your camera's and check the shots before even attempting to do any survival stuff and 4) being alone except for an emergency radio to call the team in during an emergency. Did he chit chat during his 7 days off camera? Can't say, but that sure as hell ain't the same as Bear asking his camera man 'Are you going to eat the rest of that snicker's bar?', 'Pass that bottled water...' or how about 'So you are guys done tethering that turkey yet?'

I suppose if you want to equate Les to Bear and Cody/Dave's show because he got a haircut before going out into the field, you will also equate car camping at a designated State Campground to back-country multi-night camping, surviving a major hurricane event like Katrina to having once seen a thunderstorm and an opinel #7 being every bit as flexible as a bushcrafter knife as a genuine Woodlore. Well, maybe the last one would be okay ;)

Yeah, Les Stroud has more props in my book than anyone, even Ray Mears. The guy often just up and went out on his own and even states that sometimes NO ONE knew where he was, and he often never even had an emergency team.

Les' new show is just plain creepy, but He will always be the guy I think of as legit. He gets up and goes out and suffers.... there's none of this whole "oh, This is what you should do in this or that situation and we'll modify things to demonstrate said technique". No Les is reacting in realtime to unknown challenges. (hence the mistakes which need to be shown to armchair survivalists)

That said, Survivorman is in a different category. I think there are three in general for the current survival shows. 1) Entertainment / Light Instruction of select skills (Man vs Wild; Man, Woman, Wild; & Dual Survival) 2) Controlled Outdoor Classroom / Strictly Skills (Ray Mears) & 3) Documentary / Show how people live & survive in their element (Beyond Survival and = lame/creepy and only slightly helpful).

However, Survivorman spans over all three of these really... I mean you see it all and are entertained (to a degree). It is also the only Survival Show that gives you (the likely armchair survivalist) a sober and grim and real view on what survival really is - HARD!!! ***You really don't get that tone in anything else.***

Survivorman was just so real. And I never really viewed him as an "expert" per se. He comes across as just being plain human to me (though I know he's had some training). His show more or less just shows how: grin and bear it, tighten your belt as you go, knuckle through it, and struggling can get you through any situation. That is real survival. He doesn't know every plant and its uses (just a few in the area he's studied beforehand), he makes mistakes and they're shown to you to show how survival really works. a lot of failure and some success - but just keep pushing on. That's what I take away from the show & why I think it's the only legit show.

Long live survivorman... I hope someone takes his model and runs on it in the future. I'd love to see survivorman reincarnated!

He gets more into demons and devils and how that stuff'll help you survive.... there is sometimes good information, but it's mostly spiritual in a very unsavory way; which is why I don't like it. I have watched the whole first season though. I only got through it b/c he was the original survivorman... His original show was & is way better!

By the way all, I'm looking through Discovery's daily episode guide and I did not come across any season 2 Dual Survival episodes, but I did encounter a new titled show "Masters of Survival". I'm wondering if this is a legit new show or just Beyond Survival with a new title (part Les' intro to Beyond Survival (BS) was "seeking out the true masters of survival" if I remember correctly)...
Anyone heard anything about it? It'll hit the air on the 20th of January... guess we'll find out then.

here is the link to the discovery calendar (look at 9pm) : http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-schedules/daily.html?date=20110120.020

the Masters of Survival description underneath it says: "Discovery's masters face the wilderness survival scenarios you're most likely to encounter, and show you how to make it back from any outdoor adventure gone wrong."
