Dual Survival, Stuntman vs. Wild, Man Woman Wild, Survivorman

I think Man versus Wild is the worst and I vote Bear Grylls "Most Likely to Get a Viewer Killed".
oruacat2, I SECOND your statement! Cody needs his own show. I'd like to see him showcase his everyday primitive lifestyle and disaster/EOTWAWKI/total-collapse-of-society survival skills. Dave needs a para military style survival/hunting show showcasing his military expertise with guns, knives, tactics, etc.

When you say "Im a survival expert and I'll show YOU how to survive" I think TV-Entertainment or not, you own the public at least some degree of truth.

You make some good points but if you throw out all his crazy stunts he actually covers many of the basic elements of survival: finding / making shelter, water procurement, firemaking and food. Only an idiot would attempt all of the daredevil stuff he does.

A TV show is no substitute for a survival course that provides hands-on training by experts.

While we are at it, let's bring back the Battle of the Network Stars.....this time with guns and live ammo!

Oh I like it, Ruth Hawke and Joan Collins with Mike Hawke. You think Mikey would be getting away with all that baby this and baby that with Joan around. She'd pussy whip him into shape in no time :)

Where are the women survivalists? Maybe holding down a job and then coming home to clean a dirty house, make dinner and watch the kids, while the old man drinks beer and watches TV, while he collects unemployment, is more harrowing that anything these celebrity survivalists do.

I'd like to see Dave or Bear pretend to be a single mom with five kids, a job, and all the rest for one week. Now, that'd be a SHOW!

Yep I like the Idea. I would watch either show. Oh and yeah I think Bear is just showing off. I had seen his South Dakota Badlands ep. And I worked the badlands for 15+ years. Bear did'nt know squat, about how to get out of there. And the S.D. badlands are the easy! ones. enjoy. edgy

Ive always like Survivorman the most out of all of them, but dual survival was really good too especially because I followed dave on youtube.

I would definetly like to see Les and Cody together and maybe even Bear and Dave.

That would be an interesting concept. And on the bottom of the screen they could put a counter for the times someone got rushed to the ER

I disagree aswell! Bear Grylls is criticized so much for what he is capable of because so many people are just jealous of him, his accomplishments and his skill set! The guy may have a camera crew there and a medic etc. but he puts it all out there in many respects.

If anyone goes out there and dies trying to copy what they see on these shows with out all of the other training that these pros have well then that is there bad.

I would love to have someone with bear grylls skill set with me if I was stuck somewhere.

I would love to see a show more about explorer travel.

Jealous? That's a cop-out.
Grylls does too many stupid things because he CAN - not because he SHOULD. That's my fundamental problem with him, and I'm not even counting his aversion to truthfulness. If I was stuck somewhere, the last person I would want with me is a guy who's gonna free-climb a cliff or jump blindly into raging water with a "too bad if you can't follow me!" attitude.
But hey, to each his own.

That leads me to this point - I loved the Survivorman episode where he had a buddy with him and they had to forage for food/shelter for TWO lost hunters. That guy seemed to be a veteran outdoorsman though - I'd like to see an episode with a completely untrained companion.

I just started watching dual survival because of this thread all I can say is i'm hooked lol I might not agree with everything they say/do but its very entertaining thats for sure

Man vs Wild should be renamed "How to get yourself killed in a survival situation." While I will concede that Bear is in great shape, he is touting his show as being about Surviving situations, not about "look how well my fitness program works". Survival is not about doing the stupidest things you can come up with, it is about doing those things that are the most likely to get you home safe. He is teaching the concept that the best way to survive is extreme (and mostly completely unneccessary) risk taking and yeah, that could get some arm chair warrior, who finds themself in a bad situation, injured or killed.

Fact is that these shows make more people get out there and gets kids away from their xbox, makes them interested in survival stuff.
Once they are doing it and start learning it then that is great right?
At least bear is doinG something and making a good show of it, it's not like he always gets the final word on something he does. Its the director who says what to do.

Furthermore, I bet that it has actually saved more lives than it has costed lives, these shows also make people think about this stuff.. And people are certainly able to see that it is not wise to jump in unknown water from a cliff or all that stuff...they will pick out the useful parts imo...

I don't see why people continue bashing Bear (or Dave). It is a TV show. TV is for entertainment. There are tips in the shows, but NOTHING on a survival TV show is a substitute for training and experience. If Bear wants to show off, who cares. It is entertainment.

As far as Dave - He only does what is on TV because it is entertainment.

How about, Out of the Wild: the Alaska Experiment that Discovery did? My wife and I watched it and were pretty impressed at how far they came in just 30 days. Granted they had some gear with them, but lacked any experience with the outdoors. We liked it alot. Made me want a 22/410 Combo gun bad. The only steel they had was a Gerber paraframe and an Estwing hatchet. I told her I would go for it, as long as I got to take my knife. Just sayin'. Moose

Have to agree with TheGame. First and foremost, this is all entertainment. It makes for good Neilson ratings. I'm sure there is a scintilla of truth and expertise mixed in, but, for the most part it's all designed to entertain us. Most of us will never see the parts of the world they drop him into, nor attempt any of his survival tactics. I, too, when channel surfing, will pause on new episodes just for the entertainment value. It beats the hell out of 'Yard Crashers' or 'The Jewelry Channel'.

I concede that it is entertainment, but it is being put forth on the Discovery channel (supposed to be somewhat educational), not the cartoon network. Watching Survivorman and Dual Survival I will periodically have a "that's good to know" moment. (Well, okay, the episode where Dave went into the Bee hive was way to hazardous for the gain in my opinion.) With Man vs. Wild there are more "he's not really going to do that is he?" type moments. Bear really need someone with him so he can say "Hold my Beer and watch this"

All those shows make me want more knives. It is a conspiracy! In terms of what I'd like to see, I'd like to see Bear and Dave hold Cody down and put shoes on him and prove that he actually could wear them and live. I'd also like to see him go into a 7-11 and see if he would get served.
